Passage
Ezekiel 18
Ezekiel 18 is the prophet's chapter-long demolition of a fatalist proverb circulating among the Babylonian exiles: "The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge." The exiles read their suffering as God punishing them for ancestral sin and concluded that their own moral choices did not matter. The LORD answers through Ezekiel with one of the strongest scriptural statements of individual moral responsibility in the Hebrew Bible: each soul is His, each is judged on its own conduct, and the righteous son does not die for the wicked father, nor the wicked son live on his righteous father's account. The chapter closes with a divine appeal that pierces every Calvinist-Arminian quarrel over reprobation: "I have no pleasure in the death of him who dies, says the Lord GOD; turn, then, and live."

"1. The word of Jehovah came unto me again, saying, 2. What mean ye, that ye use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying, The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge? 3. As I live, saith the Lord Jehovah, ye shall not have occasion any more to use this proverb in Israel. 4. Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die. 5. But if a man be just, and do that which is lawful and right, 6. and hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, neither hath defiled his neighbor's wife, neither hath come near to a woman in her impurity, 7. and hath not wronged any, but hath restored to the debtor his pledge, hath taken nought by robbery, hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment; 8. he that hath not given forth upon interest, neither hath taken any increase, that hath withdrawn his hand from iniquity, hath executed true justice between man and man, 9. hath walked in my statutes, and hath kept mine ordinances, to deal truly; he is just, he shall surely live, saith the Lord Jehovah. 10. If he beget a son that is a robber, a shedder of blood, and that doeth any one of these things, 11. and that doeth not any of those duties, but even hath eaten upon the mountains, and defiled his neighbor's wife, 12. hath wronged the poor and needy, hath taken by robbery, hath not restored the pledge, and hath lifted up his eyes to the idols, hath committed abomination, 13. hath given forth upon interest, and hath taken increase; shall he then live? he shall not live: he hath done all these abominations; he shall surely die; his blood shall be upon him. 14. Now, lo, if he beget a son, that seeth all his father's sins, which he hath done, and feareth, and doeth not such like; 15. that hath not eaten upon the mountains, neither hath lifted up his eyes to the idols of the house of Israel, hath not defiled his neighbor's wife, 16. neither hath wronged any, hath not taken aught to pledge, neither hath taken by robbery, but hath given his bread to the hungry, and hath covered the naked with a garment; 17. that hath withdrawn his hand from the poor, that hath not received interest nor increase, hath executed mine ordinances, hath walked in my statutes; he shall not die for the iniquity of his father, he shall surely live. 18. As for his father, because he cruelly oppressed, robbed his brother, and did that which is not good among his people, behold, he shall die in his iniquity. 19. Yet say ye, Wherefore doth not the son bear the iniquity of the father? when the son hath done that which is lawful and right, and hath kept all my statutes, and hath done them, he shall surely live. 20. The soul that sinneth, it shall die: the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son; the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him. 21. But if the wicked turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. 22. None of his transgressions that he hath committed shall be remembered against him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live. 23. Have I any pleasure in the death of the wicked? saith the Lord Jehovah; and not rather that he should return from his way, and live? 24. But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? None of his righteous deeds that he hath done shall be remembered: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die. 25. Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, O house of Israel: Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal? 26. When the righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth therein; in his iniquity that he hath done shall he die. 27. Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive. 28. Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die. 29. Yet saith the house of Israel, The way of the Lord is not equal. O house of Israel, are not my ways equal? are not your ways unequal? 30. Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord Jehovah. Return ye, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin. 31. Cast away from you all your transgressions, wherein ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel? 32. For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord Jehovah: wherefore turn yourselves, and live." (Ezekiel 18:1-32, ASV)

Setting
- Speaker: Ezekiel the priest plus direct LORD discourse through him
- Audience: Judean exiles in Babylonia, despairing of personal moral agency
- Location: Tel Abib by the Chebar canal, the exilic settlement
- Time period: Ezekiel's ministry c. 593-571 BC, this oracle likely between the first deportation (597 BC) and the temple's fall (586 BC)
Theological reading
The chapter is a frontal answer to a theodicy problem the exiles had inherited from Exodus 20:5, "visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation." The Israelites read that as transferable individual guilt: ancestral sin doomed the children. Ezekiel responds with what is sometimes called the "Ezekielian shift," not denying intergenerational consequences but denying intergenerational moral imputation. Your father's idolatry shapes your environment; it does not transfer your moral verdict. Each soul is judged on its own choices. The parallel in Deuteronomy 24:16 already legislated this for human courts ("the fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers"); Ezek 18 lifts the same principle to divine judgment.
For apologetic purposes, the chapter dismantles the common "the biblical God punishes children for their parents' sin" objection. Exodus 20:5's "visiting" refers to the natural propagation of sin's consequences through families and societies (corrupt parents typically raise corrupt children), not legal imputation. Where imputation is in view (judgment), Ezekiel makes the rule explicit: the son shall not bear the iniquity of the father. The objector must reckon with both texts at once.
The doctrinal payload runs further. Verses 21-24 establish that righteousness and wickedness are not biographical traits but present-tense orientations: the wicked who turns lives, the righteous who turns away dies. This complicates simple imputational soteriology and grounds the prophetic call to repentance as the universal hinge of moral life. Verses 30-32 are the LORD's own evangelistic appeal: "Cast away all your transgressions... make you a new heart and a new spirit... turn yourselves, and live." Jeremiah 31's new covenant promise of a new heart picks up exactly this thread.
Key words
- H5315 - nephesh, nephesh (Strong's H5315), soul / life, "all souls are mine."
- H4191 - mut, mut (Strong's H4191), to die, the verbal repetition that drives the chapter.
- H5771 - avon, avon (Strong's H5771), iniquity, the technical term in "bear the iniquity of the father."
- H7725 - shuv, shuv (Strong's H7725), to turn / return, the verb of repentance, twelve occurrences in this chapter.
- H3068 - YHWH, YHWH (Strong's H3068), the divine name attached to every formula of judgment and mercy here.
Theological themes
- Individual moral responsibility. Each soul is judged on its own conduct, not on its lineage.
- Repentance as live option. The wicked who turns lives; the righteous who turns away dies.
- Divine non-pleasure in death. God's stated will is the sinner's return, not his destruction.
- Resolution of Exodus 20:5. "Visiting" denotes consequence-propagation, not transferred legal guilt.
- New heart anticipation. v. 31's "make you a new heart" prefigures Ezekiel 36 and Jeremiah 31's new-covenant gift.

Why these four translations
ris3n chose ASV, WEB, KJV, and YLT for two reasons together. They are the most literal English translations available (formal-equivalence: word-for-word renderings that preserve the Hebrew and Greek grammar rather than smoothing it into modern dynamic-equivalence idiom). And they are in the public domain in the United States, which means fair-use quotation at any length requires no publisher license. Modern licensed translations (NASB95, ESV, NIV) restrict volume of quotation under their copyright terms, so they are not used at stub-level coverage here. NASB95 appears only on hand-curated rich passage hubs under Lockman Foundation's fair-use allowance.
The four:
- ASV (American Standard Version, 1901). The basis of the modern critical-text English tradition.
- WEB (World English Bible, contemporary). Public-domain revision in the ASV line, in current English.
- KJV (King James Version, 1611). Reformation-era, Textus Receptus base.
- YLT (Young's Literal Translation, Robert Young, 1862). Hyper-literal preservation of Hebrew and Greek grammar; useful for word-study work even where English reads stiff.
