Theological reading
"Thus saith Jehovah of hosts: I am jealous for Zion with great jealousy, and I am jealous for her with great wrath."
The verse opens the series of ten oracles in chapter 8 that answer the fasting question of 7:3 with promises rather than rulings.
The jealousy language is covenantal, not petty. The Hebrew qanna describes the exclusive commitment of a party to a bond and the corresponding refusal to share it, which is why Exodus 20:5 and Exodus 34:14 attach it to the prohibition of other gods. English "jealous" has drifted toward insecurity, and the drift misreads the word; the sense here is closer to a protective zeal that will not let go of what it has claimed.
Note the direction. God is jealous for Zion, not of her. The same wrath that fell on Jerusalem in the exile is here turned outward on the nations at ease (compare 1:15), and the shift is what makes the verse a comfort rather than a threat. A God indifferent to Zion would have left her alone in both directions.
The oracle that follows, in vv. 3-5, cashes the promise in the plainest possible image: God returning to dwell in Jerusalem, and old men with staves and children playing in the streets. Ordinary life restored is the proof of the jealousy.

Why these four translations
ris3n chose ASV, WEB, KJV, and YLT for two reasons together. They are the most literal English translations available (formal-equivalence: word-for-word renderings that preserve the Hebrew and Greek grammar rather than smoothing it into modern dynamic-equivalence idiom). And they are in the public domain in the United States, which means fair-use quotation at any length requires no publisher license. Modern licensed translations (NASB95, ESV, NIV) restrict volume of quotation under their copyright terms, so they are not used at stub-level coverage here. NASB95 appears only on hand-curated rich passage hubs under Lockman Foundation's fair-use allowance.
The four:
- ASV (American Standard Version, 1901). The basis of the modern critical-text English tradition.
- WEB (World English Bible, contemporary). Public-domain revision in the ASV line, in current English.
- KJV (King James Version, 1611). Reformation-era, Textus Receptus base.
- YLT (Young's Literal Translation, Robert Young, 1862). Hyper-literal preservation of Hebrew and Greek grammar; useful for word-study work even where English reads stiff.
