Stephen Hawking
Stephen Hawking, Stephen William Hawking, HawkingEnglish theoretical physicist and cosmologist (1942-2018); Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge (1979-2009), the chair once held by Isaac Newton. Hawking was one of the most gifted physicists of his generation, best known for his work on black-hole thermodynamics (Hawking radiation), the Penrose-Hawking singularity theorems, and the boundary conditions of the early universe. His 1988 book A Brief History of Time became one of the best-selling popular-science works ever written. He carried on this work for more than half a century while living with motor neurone disease (ALS), which left him almost fully paralysed and, from the mid-1980s, dependent on a speech-synthesizer. His scientific achievement is not in dispute anywhere in this codex. The apologetic interest lies elsewhere: in his late-career metaphysical pronouncements, which are a textbook case of scientism, eminence in physics presented as authority in philosophy and theology.
Biography
- 1942, Born in Oxford. Hawking liked to note that his birth fell on the 300th anniversary of Galileo's death.

Major scientific work
Hawking's technical reputation rests on real and lasting results, several of which the codex draws on directly.
- The Penrose-Hawking singularity theorems. Working with Roger Penrose in the late 1960s, Hawking applied the mathematics of general relativity to show that, under classical general relativity and reasonable energy conditions, an expanding universe must trace back to an initial singularity, a boundary at which the classical spacetime description breaks down. Read straightforwardly, the theorems point to the universe having a finite past, a beginning. This work is genuinely first-rate physics, and the codex treats it as such: it is cited on the theistic side as scientific corroboration of a cosmic beginning. See Kalam Cosmological Argument.
- Hawking radiation (1974). Hawking showed that, when quantum-field effects are taken into account near an event horizon, black holes are not perfectly black: they emit thermal radiation and can, over immense timescales, evaporate. This united thermodynamics, general relativity, and quantum theory in a single prediction and is widely regarded as his deepest result.
- Quantum cosmology. With James Hartle he proposed the "no-boundary" proposal, an attempt to describe the initial state of the universe in quantum-gravitational terms without a singular first moment. This is legitimate frontier physics, distinct from the popular-level metaphysical claims discussed below.
That Hawking's own singularity work is a load-bearing datum in a theistic argument is worth stating plainly. His physics is not the target of any critique here.
A Brief History of Time and the "mind of God"
A Brief History of Time (1988) closed on a famous note. Hawking wrote that if physicists were to find a complete unified theory, and understand why the universe and we exist, that would be "the ultimate triumph of human reason," for then "we would know the mind of God."
The phrase was largely metaphor. Hawking was not a theist, and he used "the mind of God" in roughly the Einsteinian sense, as a figure for the deep rational order of nature, not for a personal Creator. Over his career his public posture hardened from this ambiguous, poetic deism-flavored language toward explicit atheism, stated flatly in his later books and interviews. The 1988 line is best read as rhetoric, not as a concession to natural theology, though it is often quoted as if it were one.
The Grand Design, "philosophy is dead," and the self-creating universe
Hawking's 2010 book The Grand Design, co-written with the physicist Leonard Mlodinow, is where the metaphysical overreach becomes explicit and where the codex's critique focuses.
The book opens by declaring that "philosophy is dead" because philosophy "has not kept up with modern developments in science, particularly physics," so that scientists have become "the bearers of the torch of discovery in our quest for knowledge." It then argues that physics can dispense with a Creator: "Because there is a law such as gravity, the universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the universe exists, why we exist."
The standard Christian-philosophical replies are straightforward and can be stated without any appeal to faith.
- "Philosophy is dead" is self-refuting. The claim that philosophy is dead is not a result of physics; it is a philosophical thesis about the relative authority of disciplines. In pronouncing philosophy dead, the book is doing philosophy, and doing it badly. A statement that undercuts itself the moment it is asserted carries no weight.
- A law of gravity is not "nothing." The argument says the universe creates itself "from nothing" because "there is a law such as gravity," but a law of gravity is already something: a law with mathematical structure, presupposing a quantum vacuum, fields, and the very physics whose origin is in question. The word "nothing" is quietly redefined to mean "something with law-like structure," and the genuine metaphysical question, why there is anything at all rather than nothing, why there are laws for a universe to obey, is not answered but relabeled. To say the universe creates itself is also incoherent on its face, since a thing would have to already exist in order to do the creating.
This is the central line of John Lennox's reply in God and Stephen Hawking: Whose Design Is It Anyway? (2011). Lennox, an Oxford mathematician, grants Hawking full marks as a physicist and then presses exactly these two points: nonsense does not cease to be nonsense because eminent scientists utter it, and a law is a description of how things behave, not a cause that can bring a universe into being out of literal nothingness. The scientism / authority-play critique
This is the apologetic heart of the page, and it is best framed through the exchange between Stephen Meyer and John Lennox.
Lennox's move is not to attack Hawking's competence but to locate it. He cites Albert Einstein's warning that "the scientist makes a poor philosopher," and observes that when Hawking, or Richard Dawkins, speaks on theology and philosophy, he is stepping outside the field in which his authority was earned. The credentials that make a man a trustworthy guide to black-hole thermodynamics do not transfer to metaphysics, and a reader who defers to the physicist on the existence of God is committing an Appeal to Authority in the fallacious sense, treating expertise in one domain as if it settled a question in another.
Lennox reinforces the point with a witness who knew Hawking well. As Lennox relays it, Martin Rees, the Astronomer Royal and a longtime Cambridge colleague of Hawking, described him as a brilliant cosmologist, mathematician, and physicist, "but he knows very little philosophy and no theology, and I wouldn't take seriously anything he said about that." Rees is no theist making special pleading; his estimate is that of a fellow scientist about the limits of a friend's expertise.
The lesson the codex draws is general and is applied evenhandedly. A distinguished scientist does not thereby have authority on every subject, and the point cuts in every direction: it applies equally to Christian speakers, scientists, and public figures who trade on eminence in one field to pronounce confidently in another. The remedy is the same in each case: on a question of philosophy or theology, consult the people who actually work in philosophy or theology, weigh the arguments rather than the reputations, and hold conclusions with a modesty proportioned to one's actual competence. In the codex's apologetic
Hawking appears in the codex in two distinct roles, and it is important to keep them apart.
- As corroborating witness to a cosmic beginning. The Penrose-Hawking singularity theorems are cited on the theistic side as scientific support for the premise that the universe began to exist. Here Hawking is speaking squarely within his expertise, and the codex treats his result with the respect a landmark theorem deserves. See Kalam Cosmological Argument.
- As the textbook case of scientism. Hawking's late-career metaphysical claims, that the universe "creates itself from nothing" and that "philosophy is dead," are the standing example of a scientist overstepping his field, redefining terms to smuggle in a conclusion, and leaning on reputation where argument is required. This is the authority-play the codex rebuts.
Holding both together is the point. The physics is great; that is precisely why the philosophical overreach is instructive. It shows that scientific genius and philosophical rigor are different competencies, and that the borrowed authority of the former does nothing to establish the latter.
