This page is part of the spiritual-warfare framework in the codex, drawn from the charismatic deliverance tradition. The spirit of python gets its name from the snake in Acts 16; a slave girl in Philippi had what the Greek text literally calls a pneuma pythona, a python-spirit, associated with the Delphic oracle (Acts 16:16-18).

The framework reads the name literally as a description of how this spiritual influence operates. A python kills by squeezing the breath out of its prey, slowly, until the prey cannot breathe. Applied spiritually, the pattern looks like prayer becoming difficult and finally impossible, a strange feeling of being spiritually suffocated, the loss of spiritual energy you used to have, and active resistance during worship that feels like pressure across the chest.

The framework's gateways: prior occult or spiritually hostile environment exposure, and word curses that specifically targeted the person's prayer life or spiritual energy.

The scriptural anchor is twofold. First, the Acts 16 episode itself, where Paul casts out the python-spirit in Jesus' name. Second, Psalm 150:6: "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord." The python attacks breath because breath is what praise requires. Cut off breath, cut off praise.

The deliverance application: renounce agreements with the suffocation pattern, take the authority Paul exercised in Philippi (in Jesus' name), restart deliberate breathing-and-prayer practice (the historic tradition of breath prayer, "Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me, a sinner," fits naturally here), and continue in community where others can pray when you cannot.

The codex includes this material as one Christian tradition's framework for naming a pattern many believers experience. Other traditions describe the same phenomena through different categories.

A prayer to renounce the Spirit of Python

Lord Jesus, I renounce every constricting force that tightened around my prayer life. Break the grip of fatigue, distraction, and spiritual resistance. Restore breath, fire, and clarity to my spirit. I command the python spirit to release its hold on my prayer and worship. Fill me with the breath of the Holy Spirit. I seal this deliverance in the Blood of Jesus. Amen.

Walking it out

  1. Create short, consistent prayer intervals.
  2. Play worship daily to shift the atmosphere.
  3. Pray in the Spirit five minutes daily.
