In Luke 13, Jesus saw a woman who had been bent over for eighteen years. He did not say poor lady, you must have arthritis. He said woman, you are loosed from your infirmity, laid hands on her, and she straightened up. Then he explained to the synagogue ruler what had been going on: this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound for eighteen years (Luke 13:16).
Christian deliverance ministry takes that passage seriously. Most physical illness is just physical illness, and a doctor is the right answer. But sometimes, particularly with chronic conditions that resist all treatment, that drag on for years, that the person keeps describing in spiritual language (I feel weighed down, I cannot break free), there is a spiritual layer underneath that medicine alone cannot reach.
