"Why does that person still have a hold on me, years after we ended things?"

The Christian tradition has a name for what is happening when a past sexual relationship still pulls at you, still shapes your thinking, still surfaces in dreams or temptations even after the relationship is over. It calls it a soul tie.

Paul put it in plain language. "Do you not know that the one who joins himself to a prostitute is one body with her? For He says, 'The two shall become one flesh'" (1 Corinthians 6:16). The one-flesh union of Genesis 2:24 is not just poetic. It describes something real that happens at the level of the soul as well as the body. Sex outside the covenant of marriage forms ties that were designed to be confined to the covenant of marriage.

These ties do not just vanish when a relationship ends. They persist. They can affect how you think, who you compare your spouse to, what tempts you, what reopens at the wrong moment, and what spirits the framework in this cluster believes can take advantage of the opening.

This page is a gateway in the Spiritual Warfare cluster. A gateway is not a spirit. It is a way that spirits can attach. Sexual soul ties are one of the most common gateways the literature names.

This includes consensual sexual relationships outside marriage. It also includes sexual harm, sexual abuse, exposure to pornography that formed strong attachments, and any sexual contact that bonded the soul to someone the bond should not have been formed with. The pastoral handling of the harm category is gentle. The victim did not choose the gateway. The opening still has to be closed.

The Christian work of closing a soul tie is straightforward in shape, even when the emotional work is hard. Identify the tie. Renounce it in the name of Jesus. Forgive the other person where forgiveness is needed (which is not excusing or restoring contact, just releasing). Ask Jesus to cut the tie and heal what it carried. Walk it out with chastity and accountability from there forward.

The page below lists the specific spirits the broader framework associates with this gateway. It is offered as educational reference, not a checklist of predictions. The point is to know what doors exist so the doors can be closed.

For the general overview of how the gateway / spirit / renunciation framework works, see Spiritual Warfare.

Gateway

Sexual sin and sexual harm form ties at the level of the soul. These ties can persist long after the relationship ended and influence what still pulls at you today.

Spirits the framework associates with this gateway

These are not predictions. They are patterns the literature has named, surfaced here as educational reference.

Common questions this page answers

Q: What is a soul tie?

A soul tie is a bond formed at the level of the soul through sexual union. Paul says, "the one who joins himself to a prostitute is one body with her" (1 Corinthians 6:16), which echoes the Genesis 2:24 one-flesh union. Sex outside the covenant of marriage forms ties that were designed to be confined to it.

Q: How do I break a soul tie biblically?

Identify the tie, renounce it in the name of Jesus, forgive the other person where forgiveness is needed (not excusing or restoring contact, just releasing), and ask Jesus to cut the tie and heal what it carried. Walk it out with chastity and accountability from there forward.

Q: Can a soul tie form through pornography?

The framework includes exposure to pornography that formed strong attachments as a category that opens this gateway. The tie is formed by sexual contact and sexual bonding, including bonding to images, and it persists until specifically renounced.

Q: Does a soul tie form through sexual abuse?

Yes, the gateway can open through sexual harm as well as through consensual relationships outside marriage. The pastoral handling of the harm category is gentle, the victim did not choose the gateway, but the opening still has to be closed through renunciation and prayer.

Q: What spirits attach through sexual soul ties?

The literature most often associates Spirit of Lust, Spirit of Perversion, Spirit of Whoredom or Seduction, Spirit of Shame, Spirit of Jezebel, and Spirit of Bondage with this gateway, among others. These are patterns, not predictions, see Spiritual Warfare for the full framework.
