Theological reading
"Ye are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech's, and all that was Chilion's and Mahlon's, of the hand of Naomi." What began in secret at the threshing-floor, "Let it not be known" (3:14), is finished in public. Boaz calls the whole town to witness, and the formula frames his declaration at both ends, "ye are witnesses this day" (4:9, 4:10). The people answer, "We are witnesses" (4:11).
The names of the dead are spoken again for the first time since chapter 1. Elimelech, Mahlon and Chilion died in Moab (1:3, 1:5) and have not been named since. Boaz names them in the act that keeps their names from being "cut off from among his brethren" (4:10). Only now does the reader learn which son Ruth had married: "Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon" (4:10).
The purchase is made "of the hand of Naomi." The widow who came home with nothing turns out to hold the family's land rights, and the redemption passes through her. The legal act answers the concern of the law, that a man's "name be not blotted out of Israel" (Deuteronomy 25:6).

Why these four translations
ris3n chose ASV, WEB, KJV, and YLT for two reasons together. They are the most literal English translations available (formal-equivalence: word-for-word renderings that preserve the Hebrew and Greek grammar rather than smoothing it into modern dynamic-equivalence idiom). And they are in the public domain in the United States, which means fair-use quotation at any length requires no publisher license. Modern licensed translations (NASB95, ESV, NIV) restrict volume of quotation under their copyright terms, so they are not used at stub-level coverage here. NASB95 appears only on hand-curated rich passage hubs under Lockman Foundation's fair-use allowance.
The four:
- ASV (American Standard Version, 1901). The basis of the modern critical-text English tradition.
- WEB (World English Bible, contemporary). Public-domain revision in the ASV line, in current English.
- KJV (King James Version, 1611). Reformation-era, Textus Receptus base.
- YLT (Young's Literal Translation, Robert Young, 1862). Hyper-literal preservation of Hebrew and Greek grammar; useful for word-study work even where English reads stiff.
