Theological reading
"Thou shalt go in, and uncover his feet, and lay thee down; and he will tell thee what thou shalt do." Naomi's plan is a bold, private appeal to Boaz as a kinsman. The KJV margin glosses "uncover" as "lift up the clothes that are on" his feet. Readers dispute how much the scene implies; the narrative answers by how it unfolds. Boaz blesses Ruth for her conduct (3:10), calls her "a worthy woman" (3:11), she lies "at his feet until the morning" (3:14), and he settles the matter by public law at the gate (4:1-10).
Naomi expects Boaz to take the lead: "he will tell thee what thou shalt do." Ruth agrees, "All that thou sayest I will do" (3:5), but at the threshing-floor she speaks first and states the request herself: "spread therefore thy skirt over thy handmaid; for thou art a near kinsman" (3:9). Boaz then promises, "I will do to thee all that thou sayest" (3:11). The one who was to be told what to do does the telling.
The word Ruth uses for "skirt" is the word Boaz used for the "wings" of Jehovah under which she had come to take refuge (2:12; both Strong's H3671 in the KJV). Naomi's plan gives Ruth the occasion to ask Boaz to be the answer to his own blessing.

Why these four translations
ris3n chose ASV, WEB, KJV, and YLT for two reasons together. They are the most literal English translations available (formal-equivalence: word-for-word renderings that preserve the Hebrew and Greek grammar rather than smoothing it into modern dynamic-equivalence idiom). And they are in the public domain in the United States, which means fair-use quotation at any length requires no publisher license. Modern licensed translations (NASB95, ESV, NIV) restrict volume of quotation under their copyright terms, so they are not used at stub-level coverage here. NASB95 appears only on hand-curated rich passage hubs under Lockman Foundation's fair-use allowance.
The four:
- ASV (American Standard Version, 1901). The basis of the modern critical-text English tradition.
- WEB (World English Bible, contemporary). Public-domain revision in the ASV line, in current English.
- KJV (King James Version, 1611). Reformation-era, Textus Receptus base.
- YLT (Young's Literal Translation, Robert Young, 1862). Hyper-literal preservation of Hebrew and Greek grammar; useful for word-study work even where English reads stiff.
