ASV (ASV)

"44. And Jehovah spake unto Moses, saying, 45. Get you up from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment. And they fell upon their faces."

"46. And Moses said unto Aaron, Take thy censer, and put fire therein from off the altar, and lay incense thereon, and carry it quickly unto the congregation, and make atonement for them: for there is wrath gone out from Jehovah; the plague is begun. 47. And Aaron took as Moses spake, and ran into the midst of the assembly; and, behold, the plague was begun among the people: and he put on the incense, and made atonement for the people. 48. And he stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed."

"49. Now they that died by the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, besides them that died about the matter of Korah. 50. And Aaron returned unto Moses unto the door of the tent of meeting: and the plague was stayed." (Numbers 16:44-50, ASV)

He put on the incense, and made atonement for the people. 48. He stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed."

"49. Now those who died by the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, besides those who died about the matter of Korah. 50. Aaron returned to Moses to the door of the Tent of Meeting, and the plague was stopped." (Numbers 16:44-50, WEB)

Why these four translations

ris3n chose ASV, WEB, KJV, and YLT for two reasons together. They are the most literal English translations available (formal-equivalence: word-for-word renderings that preserve the Hebrew and Greek grammar rather than smoothing it into modern dynamic-equivalence idiom). And they are in the public domain in the United States, which means fair-use quotation at any length requires no publisher license. Modern licensed translations (NASB95, ESV, NIV) restrict volume of quotation under their copyright terms, so they are not used at stub-level coverage here. NASB95 appears only on hand-curated rich passage hubs under Lockman Foundation's fair-use allowance.

The four:

  • ASV (American Standard Version, 1901). The basis of the modern critical-text English tradition.
  • WEB (World English Bible, contemporary). Public-domain revision in the ASV line, in current English.
  • KJV (King James Version, 1611). Reformation-era, Textus Receptus base.
  • YLT (Young's Literal Translation, Robert Young, 1862). Hyper-literal preservation of Hebrew and Greek grammar; useful for word-study work even where English reads stiff.
