ASV (ASV)

"1. And when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, and came unto Bethphage, unto the mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, 2. saying unto them, Go into the village that is over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me. 3. And if any one say aught unto you, ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them; and straightway he will send them. 4. Now this is come to pass, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophet, saying, 5. Tell ye the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, Meek, and riding upon an ass, And upon a colt the foal of an ass. 6. And the disciples went, and did even as Jesus appointed them, 7. and brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their garments; and he sat thereon. 8. And the most part of the multitude spread their garments in the way; and others cut branches from the trees, and spread them in the way. 9. And the multitudes that went before him, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest. 10. And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was stirred, saying, Who is this? 11. And the multitudes said, This is the prophet, Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee."

"12. And Jesus entered into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the money-changers, and the seats of them that sold the doves; 13. and he saith unto them, It is written, My house shall be called a house of prayer: but ye make it a den of robbers." (Matthew 21:1-13, ASV)

"1. When they came near to Jerusalem, and came to Bethsphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, 2. saying to them, “Go into the village that is opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them, and bring them to me. 3. If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord needs them,’ and immediately he will send them.” 4. All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophet, saying, 5. “Tell the daughter of Zion, behold, your King comes to you, humble, and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.” 6. The disciples went, and did just as Jesus commanded them, 7. and brought the donkey and the colt, and laid their clothes on them; and he sat on them. 8. A very great multitude spread their clothes on the road. Others cut branches from the trees, and spread them on the road. 9. The multitudes who went in front of him, and those who followed, kept shouting, “Hosanna to the son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” 10. When he had come into Jerusalem, all the city was stirred up, saying, “Who is this?” 11. The multitudes said, “This is the prophet, Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee.”"

"12. Jesus entered into the temple of God, and drove out all of those who sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the money changers’ tables and the seats of those who sold the doves. 13. Why these four translations

ris3n chose ASV, WEB, KJV, and YLT for two reasons together. They are the most literal English translations available (formal-equivalence: word-for-word renderings that preserve the Hebrew and Greek grammar rather than smoothing it into modern dynamic-equivalence idiom). And they are in the public domain in the United States, which means fair-use quotation at any length requires no publisher license. Modern licensed translations (NASB95, ESV, NIV) restrict volume of quotation under their copyright terms, so they are not used at stub-level coverage here. NASB95 appears only on hand-curated rich passage hubs under Lockman Foundation's fair-use allowance.

The four:

  • ASV (American Standard Version, 1901). The basis of the modern critical-text English tradition.
  • WEB (World English Bible, contemporary). Public-domain revision in the ASV line, in current English.
  • KJV (King James Version, 1611). Reformation-era, Textus Receptus base.
  • YLT (Young's Literal Translation, Robert Young, 1862). Hyper-literal preservation of Hebrew and Greek grammar; useful for word-study work even where English reads stiff.
