ASV (ASV)

"37. But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they beheld a spirit. 38. And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and wherefore do questionings arise in your heart?"

"39. See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye behold me having. 40. And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. 41. And while they still disbelieved for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here anything to eat? 42. And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish. 43. And he took it, and ate before them."

"44. And he said unto them, These are my words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must needs be fulfilled, which are written in the law of Moses, and the prophets, and the psalms, concerning me. 45. Then opened he their mind, that they might understand the scriptures;" (Luke 24:37-45, ASV)

"37. But they were terrified and filled with fear, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. 38. He said to them, “Why are you troubled? Why do doubts arise in your hearts?"

"39. See my hands and my feet, that it is truly me. Touch me and see, for a spirit doesn’t have flesh and bones, as you see that I have.” 40. When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. 41. While they still didn’t believe for joy, and wondered, he said to them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42. They gave him a piece of a broiled fish and some honeycomb. 43. He took them, and ate in front of them."

"44. He said to them, “This is what I told you, while I was still with you, that all things which are written in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms, concerning me must be fulfilled.” 45. Then he opened their minds, that they might understand the Scriptures." (Luke 24:37-45, WEB)

Why these four translations

ris3n chose ASV, WEB, KJV, and YLT for two reasons together. They are the most literal English translations available (formal-equivalence: word-for-word renderings that preserve the Hebrew and Greek grammar rather than smoothing it into modern dynamic-equivalence idiom). And they are in the public domain in the United States, which means fair-use quotation at any length requires no publisher license. Modern licensed translations (NASB95, ESV, NIV) restrict volume of quotation under their copyright terms, so they are not used at stub-level coverage here. NASB95 appears only on hand-curated rich passage hubs under Lockman Foundation's fair-use allowance.

The four:

  • ASV (American Standard Version, 1901). The basis of the modern critical-text English tradition.
  • WEB (World English Bible, contemporary). Public-domain revision in the ASV line, in current English.
  • KJV (King James Version, 1611). Reformation-era, Textus Receptus base.
  • YLT (Young's Literal Translation, Robert Young, 1862). Hyper-literal preservation of Hebrew and Greek grammar; useful for word-study work even where English reads stiff.
