Luke 12.50

Book: Luke · ASV / WEB / KJV / YLT

Immediate context (±2 verses)

ASV (ASV)

"48. but he that knew not, and did things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. And to whomsoever much is given, of him shall much be required: and to whom they commit much, of him will they ask the more. 49. I came to cast fire upon the earth; and what do I desire, if it is already kindled?"

"50. But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!"

"51. Think ye that I am come to give peace in the earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: 52. for there shall be from henceforth five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three." (Luke 12:48-52, ASV)

WEB (WEB)

"48. but he who didn’t know, and did things worthy of stripes, will be beaten with few stripes. To whomever much is given, of him will much be required; and to whom much was entrusted, of him more will be asked. 49. “I came to throw fire on the earth. I wish it were already kindled."

"50. But I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how distressed I am until it is accomplished!"

"51. Do you think that I have come to give peace in the earth? I tell you, no, but rather division. 52. For from now on, there will be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three." (Luke 12:48-52, WEB)

KJV (KJV)

"48. But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more. 49. I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I, if it be already kindled?"

"50. But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished! straitened: or, pained"

"51. Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: 52. For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three." (Luke 12:48-52, KJV)

YLT (YLT)

"48. and he who, not having known, and having done things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few; and to every one to whom much was given, much shall be required from him; and to whom they did commit much, more abundantly they will ask of him. 49. 'Fire I came to cast to the earth, and what will I if already it was kindled?"

"50. but I have a baptism to be baptized with, and how am I pressed till it may be completed!"

"51. 'Think ye that peace I came to give in the earth? no, I say to you, but rather division; 52. for there shall be henceforth five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three;" (Luke 12:48-52, YLT)

Theological reading

Key words

Why these four translations

ris3n chose ASV, WEB, KJV, and YLT for two reasons together. They are the most literal English translations available (formal-equivalence: word-for-word renderings that preserve the Hebrew and Greek grammar rather than smoothing it into modern dynamic-equivalence idiom). And they are in the public domain in the United States, which means fair-use quotation at any length requires no publisher license. Modern licensed translations (NASB95, ESV, NIV) restrict volume of quotation under their copyright terms, so they are not used at stub-level coverage here. NASB95 appears only on hand-curated rich passage hubs under Lockman Foundation's fair-use allowance.

The four:

  • ASV (American Standard Version, 1901). The basis of the modern critical-text English tradition.
  • WEB (World English Bible, contemporary). Public-domain revision in the ASV line, in current English.
  • KJV (King James Version, 1611). Reformation-era, Textus Receptus base.
  • YLT (Young's Literal Translation, Robert Young, 1862). Hyper-literal preservation of Hebrew and Greek grammar; useful for word-study work even where English reads stiff.
