Luke 1.1-9.50

1. Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to draw up a narrative concerning those matters which have been fulfilled among us, 2. even as they delivered them unto us, who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word, 3. it seemed good to me also, having traced the course of all things accurately from the first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus; 4. that thou mightest know the certainty concerning the things wherein thou wast instructed. 5. There was in the days of Herod, king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abijah: and he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. 6. And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. 7. And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years. 8. Now it came to pass, while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course, 9. according to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to enter into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10. And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the hour of incense. 11. And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of altar of incense. 12. And Zacharias was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him. 13. But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: because thy supplication is heard, and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. 14. And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. 15. For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother's womb. 16. And many of the children of Israel shall be turn unto the Lord their God. 17. And he shall go before his face in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to walk in the wisdom of the just; to make ready for the Lord a people prepared for him. 18. And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years. 19. And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak unto thee, and to bring thee these good tidings. 20. And behold, thou shalt be silent and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall come to pass, because thou believedst not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season. 21. And the people were waiting for Zacharias, and they marvelled while he tarried in the temple. 22. And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: and he continued making signs unto them, and remained dumb. 23. And it came to pass, when the days of his ministration were fulfilled, he departed unto his house. 24. And after these days Elisabeth his wife conceived; and she hid herself five months, saying, 25. Thus hath the Lord done unto me in the days wherein he looked upon me, to take away my reproach among men. 26. Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, 27. to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. 28. And he came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord is with thee. 29. But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this might be. 30. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favor with God. 31. And behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. 32. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Most High: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33. and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. 34. And Mary said unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? 35. And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee: wherefore also the holy thing which is begotten shall be called the Son of God. 36. And behold, Elisabeth thy kinswoman, she also hath conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her that was called barren. 37. For no word from God shall be void of power. 38. And Mary said, Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her. 39. And Mary arose in these days and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Judah; 40. and entered into the house of Zacharias and saluted Elisabeth. 41. And it came to pass, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit; 42. and she lifted up her voice with a loud cry, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. 43. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come unto me? 44. For behold, when the voice of thy salutation came into my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. 45. And blessed is she that believed; for there shall be a fulfilment of the things which have been spoken to her from the Lord. 46. And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, 47. And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. 48. For he hath looked upon the low estate of his handmaid: For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. 49. For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; And holy is his name. 50. And his mercy is unto generations and generations On them that fear him. 51. He hath showed strength with his arm; He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their heart. 52. He hath put down princes from their thrones, And hath exalted them of low degree. 53. The hungry he hath filled with good things; And the rich he hath sent empty away. 54. He hath given help to Israel his servant, That he might remember mercy 55. (As he spake unto our fathers) Toward Abraham and his seed for ever. 56. And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned unto her house. 57. Now Elisabeth's time was fulfilled that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son. 58. And her neighbors and her kinsfolk heard that the Lord had magnified his mercy towards her; and they rejoiced with her. 59. And it came to pass on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him Zacharias, after the name of the father. 60. And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John. 61. And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name. 62. And they made signs to his father, what he would have him called. 63. And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all. 64. And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, blessing God. 65. And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea. 66. And all that heard them laid them up in their heart, saying, What then shall this child be? For the hand of the Lord was with him. 67. And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying, 68. Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; For he hath visited and wrought redemption for his people, 69. And hath raised up a horn of salvation for us In the house of his servant David 70. (As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets that have been from of old), 71. Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; 72. To show mercy towards, our fathers, And to remember his holy covenant; 73. The oath which he spake unto Abraham our father, 74. To grant unto us that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies Should serve him without fear, 75. In holiness and righteousness before him all our days. 76. Yea and thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Most High: For thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to make ready his ways; 77. To give knowledge of salvation unto his people In the remission of their sins, 78. Because of the tender mercy of our God, Whereby the dayspring from on high shall visit us, 79. To shine upon them that sit in darkness and the shadow of death; To guide our feet into the way of peace. 80. And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his showing unto Israel. 2:1. Now it came to pass in those days, there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be enrolled. 2:2. This was the first enrolment made when Quirinius was governor of Syria. 2:3. And all went to enrol themselves, every one to his own city. 2:4. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David; 2:5. to enrol himself with Mary, who was betrothed to him, being great with child. 2:6. And it came to pass, while they were there, the days were fulfilled that she should be delivered. 2:7. And she brought forth her firstborn son; and she wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. 2:8. And there were shepherds in the same country abiding in the field, and keeping watch by night over their flock. 2:9. And an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 2:10. And the angel said unto them, Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all the people: 2:11. for there is born to you this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord. 2:12. And this is the sign unto you: Ye shall find a babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, and lying in a manger. 2:13. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 2:14. Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men in whom he is well pleased. 2:15. And it came to pass, when the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing that is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. 2:16. And they came with haste, and found both Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in the manger. 2:17. And when they saw it, they made known concerning the saying which was spoken to them about this child. 2:18. And all that heard it wondered at the things which were spoken unto them by the shepherds. 2:19. But Mary kept all these sayings, pondering them in her heart. 2:20. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, even as it was spoken unto them. 2:21. And when eight days were fulfilled for circumcising him, his name was called JESUS, which was so called by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. 2:22. And when the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were fulfilled, they brought him up to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord 2:23. (as it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord), 2:24. and to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons. 2:25. And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 2:26. And it had been revealed unto him by the Holy Spirit, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ. 2:27. And he came in the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, that they might do concerning him after the custom of the law, 2:28. then he received him into his arms, and blessed God, and said, 2:29. Now lettest thou thy servant depart, Lord, According to thy word, in peace; 2:30. For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, 2:31. Which thou hast prepared before the face of all peoples; 2:32. A light for revelation to the Gentiles, And the glory of thy people Israel. 2:33. And his father and his mother were marvelling at the things which were spoken concerning him; 2:34. and Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the falling and the rising of many in Israel; and for a sign which is spoken against; 2:35. yea and a sword shall pierce through thine own soul; that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed. 2:36. And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher (she was of a great age, having lived with a husband seven years from her virginity, 2:37. and she had been a widow even unto fourscore and four years), who departed not from the temple, worshipping with fastings and supplications night and day. 2:38. And coming up at that very hour she gave thanks unto God, and spake of him to all them that were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem. 2:39. And when they had accomplished all things that were according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth. 2:40. And the child grew, and waxed strong, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him. 2:41. And his parents went every year to Jerusalem at the feast of the passover. 2:42. And when he was twelve years old, they went up after the custom of the feast; 2:43. and when they had fulfilled the days, as they were returning, the boy Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and his parents knew it not; 2:44. but supposing him to be in the company, they went a day's journey; and they sought for him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance: 2:45. and when they found him not, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking for him. 2:46. And it came to pass, after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both hearing them, and asking them questions: 2:47. and all that heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. 2:48. And when they saw him, they were astonished; and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I sought thee sorrowing. 2:49. And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? knew ye not that I must be in my Father's house? 2:50. And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them. 2:51. And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth; and he was subject unto them: and his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. 2:52. And Jesus advanced in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men. 3:1. Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, 3:2. in the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. 3:3. And he came into all the region round about the Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance unto remission of sins; 3:4. as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make ye ready the way of the Lord, Make his paths straight. 3:5. Every valley shall be filled, And every mountain and hill shall be brought low; And the crooked shall become straight, And the rough ways smooth; 3:6. And all flesh shall see the salvation of God. 3:7. He said therefore to the multitudes that went out to be baptized of him, Ye offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 3:8. Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. 3:9. And even now the axe also lieth at the root of the trees: every tree therefore that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 3:10. And the multitudes asked him, saying, What then must we do? 3:11. And he answered and said unto them, He that hath two coats, let him impart to him that hath none; and he that hath food, let him do likewise. 3:12. And there came also publicans to be baptized, and they said unto him, Teacher, what must we do? 3:13. And he said unto them, Extort no more than that which is appointed you. 3:14. And soldiers also asked him, saying, And we, what must we do? And he said unto them, Extort from no man by violence, neither accuse any one wrongfully; and be content with your wages. 3:15. And as the people were in expectation, and all men reasoned in their hearts concerning John, whether haply he were the Christ; 3:16. John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but there cometh he that is mightier than I, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and in fire: 3:17. whose fan is in his hand, thoroughly to cleanse his threshing-floor, and to gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire. 3:18. With many other exhortations therefore preached he good tidings unto the people; 3:19. but Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother's wife, and for all the evil things which Herod had done, 3:20. added this also to them all, that he shut up John in prison. 3:21. Now it came to pass, when all the people were baptized, that, Jesus also having been baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, 3:22. and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form, as a dove, upon him, and a voice came out of heaven, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased. 3:23. And Jesus himself, when he began to teach, was about thirty years of age, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli, 3:24. the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph, 3:25. the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, the son of Naggai, 3:26. the son of Maath, the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein, the son of Josech, the son of Joda, 3:27. the son of Joanan, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, the son of Neri, 3:28. the son of Melchi, the son of Addi, the son of Cosam, the son of Elmadam, the son of Er, 3:29. the son of Jesus, the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, 3:30. the son of Symeon, the son of Judas, the son of Joseph, the son of Jonam, the son of Eliakim, 3:31. the son of Melea, the son of Menna, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David, 3:32. the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Salmon, the son of Nahshon, 3:33. the son of Amminadab, the son of Arni, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah, 3:34. the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor, 3:35. the son of Serug, the son of Reu, the son of Peleg, the son of Eber, the son of Shelah, 3:36. the son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech, 3:37. the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalaleel, the son of Cainan, 3:38. the son of Enos, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God. 4:1. And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led in the Spirit in the wilderness 4:2. during forty days, being tempted of the devil. And he did eat nothing in those days: and when they were completed, he hungered. 4:3. And the devil said unto him, if thou art the Son of God, command this stone that it become bread. 4:4. And Jesus answered unto him, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone. 4:5. And he led him up, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 4:6. And the devil said unto him, To thee will I give all this authority, and the glory of them: for it hath been delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. 4:7. If thou therefore wilt worship before me, it shall all be thine. 4:8. And Jesus answered and said unto him, It is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. 4:9. And he led him to Jerusalem, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou art the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence: 4:10. for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee, to guard thee: 4:11. and, On their hands they shall bear thee up, Lest haply thou dash thy foot against a stone. 4:12. And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not make trial of the Lord thy God. 4:13. And when the devil had completed every temptation, he departed from him for a season. 4:14. And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and a fame went out concerning him through all the region round about. 4:15. And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all. 4:16. And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and he entered, as his custom was, into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up to read. 4:17. And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Isaiah. And he opened the book, and found the place where it was written, 4:18. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, Because he anointed me to preach good tidings to the poor: He hath sent me to proclaim release to the captives, And recovering of sight to the blind, To set at liberty them that are bruised, 4:19. To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord. 4:20. And he closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant, and sat down: and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fastened on him. 4:21. And he began to say unto them, To-day hath this scripture been fulfilled in your ears. 4:22. And all bare him witness, and wondered at the words of grace which proceeded out of his mouth: and they said, Is not this Joseph's son? 4:23. And he said unto them, Doubtless ye will say unto me this parable, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done at Capernaum, do also here in thine own country. 4:24. And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is acceptable in his own country. 4:25. But of a truth I say unto you, There were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when there came a great famine over all the land; 4:26. and unto none of them was Elijah sent, but only to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow. 4:27. And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian. 4:28. And they were all filled with wrath in the synagogue, as they heard these things; 4:29. and they rose up, and cast him forth out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might throw him down headlong. 4:30. But he passing through the midst of them went his way. 4:31. And he came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the sabbath day: 4:32. and they were astonished at his teaching; for his word was with authority. 4:33. And in the synagogue there was a man, that had a spirit of an unclean demon; and he cried out with a loud voice, 4:34. Ah! what have we to do with thee, Jesus thou Nazarene? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God. 4:35. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the demon had thrown him down in the midst, he came out of him, having done him no hurt. 4:36. And amazement came upon all, and they spake together, one with another, saying, What is this word? for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out. 4:37. And there went forth a rumor concerning him into every place of the region round about. 4:38. And he rose up from the synagogue, and entered into the house of Simon. And Simon's wife's mother was holden with a great fever; and they besought him for her. 4:39. And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she rose up and ministered unto them. 4:40. And when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them. 4:41. And demons also came out from many, crying out, and saying, Thou art the Son of God. And rebuking them, he suffered them not to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ. 4:42. And when it was day, he came out and went into a desert place: and the multitudes sought after him, and came unto him, and would have stayed him, that he should not go from them. 4:43. But he said unto them, I must preach the good tidings of the kingdom of God to the other cities also: for therefore was I sent. 4:44. And he was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee. 5:1. Now it came to pass, while the multitude pressed upon him and heard the word of God, that he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret; 5:2. and he saw two boats standing by the lake: but the fishermen had gone out of them, and were washing their nets. 5:3. And he entered into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the multitudes out of the boat. 5:4. And when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Put out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. 5:5. And Simon answered and said, Master, we toiled all night, and took nothing: but at thy word I will let down the nets. 5:6. And when they had done this, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes; and their nets were breaking; 5:7. and they beckoned unto their partners in the other boat, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 5:8. But Simon Peter, when he saw it, fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. 5:9. For he was amazed, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken; 5:10. and so were also James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. 5:11. And when they had brought their boats to land, they left all, and followed him. 5:12. And it came to pass, while he was in one of the cities, behold, a man full of leprosy: and when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. 5:13. And he stretched forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou made clean. And straightway the leprosy departed from him. 5:14. And he charged him to tell no man: but go thy way, and show thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. 5:15. But so much the more went abroad the report concerning him: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed of their infirmities. 5:16. But he withdrew himself in the deserts, and prayed. 5:17. And it came to pass on one of those days, that he was teaching; and there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, who were come out of every village of Galilee and Judaea and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was with him to heal. 5:18. And behold, men bring on a bed a man that was palsied: and they sought to bring him in, and to lay him before him. 5:19. And not finding by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went up to the housetop, and let him down through the tiles with his couch into the midst before Jesus. 5:20. And seeing their faith, he said, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. 5:21. And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this that speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? 5:22. But Jesus perceiving their reasonings, answered and said unto them, Why reason ye in your hearts? 5:23. Which is easier, to say, Thy sins are forgiven thee; or to say, Arise and walk? 5:24. But that ye may know that the Son of man hath authority on earth to forgive sins (he said unto him that was palsied), I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go unto thy house. 5:25. And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his house, glorifying God. 5:26. And amazement took hold on all, and they glorified God; and they were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to-day. 5:27. And after these things he went forth, and beheld a publican, named Levi, sitting at the place of toll, and said unto him, Follow me. 5:28. And he forsook all, and rose up and followed him. 5:29. And Levi made him a great feast in his house: and there was a great multitude of publicans and of others that were sitting at meat with them. 5:30. And the Pharisees and their scribes murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with the publicans and sinners? 5:31. And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are in health have no need of a physician; but they that are sick. 5:32. I am not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance. 5:33. And they said unto him, The disciples of John fast often, and make supplications; likewise also the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink. 5:34. And Jesus said unto them, Can ye make the sons of the bride-chamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? 5:35. But the days will come; and when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, then will they fast in those days. 5:36. And he spake also a parable unto them: No man rendeth a piece from a new garment and putteth it upon an old garment; else he will rend the new, and also the piece from the new will not agree with the old. 5:37. And no man putteth new wine into old wine-skins; else the new wine will burst the skins, and itself will be spilled, and the skins will perish. 5:38. But new wine must be put into fresh wine-skins. 5:39. And no man having drunk old wine desireth new; for he saith, The old is good. 6:1. Now it came to pass on a sabbath, that he was going through the grainfields; and his disciples plucked the ears, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands. 6:2. But certain of the Pharisees said, Why do ye that which it is not lawful to do on the sabbath day? 6:3. And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read even this, what David did, when he was hungry, he, and they that were with him; 6:4. how he entered into the house of God, and took and ate the showbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat save for the priests alone? 6:5. And he said unto them, The Son of man is lord of the sabbath. 6:6. And it came to pass on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man there, and his right hand was withered. 6:7. And the scribes and the Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath; that they might find how to accuse him. 6:8. But he knew their thoughts; and he said to the man that had his hand withered, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth. 6:9. And Jesus said unto them, I ask you, Is it lawful on the sabbath to do good, or to do harm? to save a life, or to destroy it? 6:10. And he looked round about on them all, and said unto him, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored. 6:11. But they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus. 6:12. And it came to pass in these days, that he went out into the mountain to pray; and he continued all night in prayer to God. 6:13. And when it was day, he called his disciples; and he chose from them twelve, whom also he named apostles: 6:14. Simon, whom he also named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James and John, and Philip and Bartholomew, 6:15. and Matthew and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot, 6:16. and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor; 6:17. and he came down with them, and stood on a level place, and a great multitude of his disciples, and a great number of the people from all Judaea and Jerusalem, and the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases; 6:18. and they that were troubled with unclean spirits were healed. 6:19. And all the multitude sought to touch him; for power came forth from him, and healed them all. 6:20. And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed are ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God. 6:21. Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh. 6:22. Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake. 6:23. Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy: for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for in the same manner did their fathers unto the prophets. 6:24. But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation. 6:25. Woe unto you, ye that are full now! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you, ye that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep. 6:26. Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for in the same manner did their fathers to the false prophets. 6:27. But I say unto you that hear, Love your enemies, do good to them that hate you, 6:28. bless them that curse you, pray for them that despitefully use you. 6:29. To him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and from him that taketh away thy cloak withhold not thy coat also. 6:30. Give to every one that asketh thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again. 6:31. And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. 6:32. And if ye love them that love you, what thank have ye? for even sinners love those that love them. 6:33. And if ye do good to them that do good to you, what thank have ye? for even sinners do the same. 6:34. And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? even sinners lend to sinners, to receive again as much. 6:35. But love your enemies, and do them good, and lend, never despairing; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be sons of the Most High: for he is kind toward the unthankful and evil. 6:36. Be ye merciful, even as your Father is merciful. 6:37. And judge not, and ye shall not be judged: and condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: release, and ye shall be released: 6:38. give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, shall they give into your bosom. For with what measure ye mete it shall be measured to you again. 6:39. And he spake also a parable unto them, Can the blind guide the blind? shall they not both fall into a pit? 6:40. The disciple is not above his teacher: but every one when he is perfected shall be as his teacher. 6:41. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? 6:42. Or how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me cast out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote that is in thy brother's eye. 6:43. For there is no good tree that bringeth forth corrupt fruit; nor again a corrupt tree that bringeth forth good fruit. 6:44. For each tree is known by its own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes. 6:45. The good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth that which is evil: for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. 6:46. And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? 6:47. Every one that cometh unto me, and heareth my words, and doeth them, I will show you to whom he is like: 6:48. he is like a man building a house, who digged and went deep, and laid a foundation upon the rock: and when a flood arose, the stream brake against that house, and could not shake it: because it had been well builded. 6:49. But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that built a house upon the earth without a foundation; against which the stream brake, and straightway it fell in; and the ruin of that house was great. 7:1. After he had ended all his sayings in the ears of the people, he entered into Capernaum. 7:2. And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick and at the point of death. 7:3. And when he heard concerning Jesus, he sent unto him elders of the Jews, asking him that he would come and save his servant. 7:4. And they, when they came to Jesus, besought him earnestly, saying, He is worthy that thou shouldest do this for him; 7:5. for he loveth our nation, and himself built us our synagogue. 7:6. And Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself; for I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: 7:7. wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say the word, and my servant shall be healed. 7:8. For I also am a man set under authority, having under myself soldiers: and I say to this one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. 7:9. And when Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned and said unto the multitude that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. 7:10. And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole. 7:11. And it came to pass soon afterwards, that he went to a city called Nain; and his disciples went with him, and a great multitude. 7:12. Now when he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, there was carried out one that was dead, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her. 7:13. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not. 7:14. And he came nigh and touched the bier: and the bearers stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. 7:15. And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. 7:16. And fear took hold on all: and they glorified God, saying, A great prophet is arisen among us: and, God hath visited his people. 7:17. And this report went forth concerning him in the whole of Judaea, and all the region round about. 7:18. And the disciples of John told him of all these things. 7:19. And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to the Lord, saying, Art thou he that cometh, or look we for another? 7:20. And when the men were come unto him, they said, John the Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that cometh, or look we for another? 7:21. In that hour he cured many of diseases and plagues and evil spirits; and on many that were blind he bestowed sight. 7:22. And he answered and said unto them, Go and tell John the things which ye have seen and heard; the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, the poor have good tidings preached to them. 7:23. And blessed is he, whosoever shall find no occasion of stumbling in me. 7:24. And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to say unto the multitudes concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness to behold? a reed shaken with the wind? 7:25. But what went ye out to see? a man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they that are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts. 7:26. But what went ye out to see? a prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet. 7:27. This is he of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, Who shall prepare thy way before thee. 7:28. I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there is none greater than John: yet he that is but little in the kingdom of God is greater than he. 7:29. And all the people when they heard, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John. 7:30. But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected for themselves the counsel of God, being not baptized of him. 7:31. Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation, and to what are they like? 7:32. They are like unto children that sit in the marketplace, and call one to another; who say, We piped unto you, and ye did not dance; we wailed, and ye did not weep. 7:33. For John the Baptist is come eating no bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a demon. 7:34. The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold, a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners! 7:35. And wisdom is justified of all her children. 7:36. And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he entered into the Pharisee's house, and sat down to meat. 7:37. And behold, a woman who was in the city, a sinner; and when she knew that he was sitting at meat in the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster cruse of ointment, 7:38. and standing behind at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment. 7:39. Now when the Pharisee that had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have perceived who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him, that she is a sinner. 7:40. And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Teacher, say on. 7:41. A certain lender had two debtors: the one owed five hundred shillings, and the other fifty. 7:42. When they had not wherewith to pay, he forgave them both. Which of them therefore will love him most? 7:43. Simon answered and said, He, I suppose, to whom he forgave the most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged. 7:44. And turning to the woman, he said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thy house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath wetted my feet with her tears, and wiped them with her hair. 7:45. Thou gavest me no kiss: but she, since the time I came in, hath not ceased to kiss my feet. 7:46. My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but she hath anointed my feet with ointment. 7:47. Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little. 7:48. And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven. 7:49. And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that even forgiveth sins? 7:50. And he said unto the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace. 8:1. And it came to pass soon afterwards, that he went about through cities and villages, preaching and bringing the good tidings of the kingdom of God, and with him the twelve, 8:2. and certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary that was called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, 8:3. and Joanna the wife of Chuzas Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, who ministered unto them of their substance. 8:4. And when a great multitude came together, and they of every city resorted unto him, he spake by a parable: 8:5. The sower went forth to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden under foot, and the birds of the heaven devoured it. 8:6. And other fell on the rock; and as soon as it grew, it withered away, because it had no moisture. 8:7. And other fell amidst the thorns; and the thorns grew with it, and choked it. 8:8. And other fell into the good ground, and grew, and brought forth fruit a hundredfold. As he said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. 8:9. And his disciples asked him what this parable might be. 8:10. And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to the rest in parables; that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. 8:11. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 8:12. And those by the way side are they that have heard; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word from their heart, that they may not believe and be saved. 8:13. And those on the rock are they who, when they have heard, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. 8:14. And that which fell among the thorns, these are they that have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection. 8:15. And that in the good ground, these are such as in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, hold it fast, and bring forth fruit with patience. 8:16. And no man, when he hath lighted a lamp, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but putteth it on a stand, that they that enter in may see the light. 8:17. For nothing is hid, that shall not be made manifest; nor anything secret, that shall not be known and come to light. 8:18. Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that which he thinketh he hath. 8:19. And there came to him his mother and brethren, and they could not come at him for the crowd. 8:20. And it was told him, Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee. 8:21. But he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these that hear the word of God, and do it. 8:22. Now it came to pass on one of those days, that he entered into a boat, himself and his disciples; and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake: and they launched forth. 8:23. But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filling with water, and were in jeopardy. 8:24. And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. And he awoke, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm. 8:25. And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And being afraid they marvelled, saying one to another, Who then is this, that he commandeth even the winds and the water, and they obey him? 8:26. And they arrived at the country of the Gerasenes, which is over against Galilee. 8:27. And when he was come forth upon the land, there met him a certain man out of the city, who had demons; and for a long time he had worn no clothes, and abode not in any house, but in the tombs. 8:28. And when he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of the Most High God? I beseech thee, torment me not. 8:29. For he was commanding the unclean spirit to come out from the man. For oftentimes it had seized him: and he was kept under guard, and bound with chains and fetters; and breaking the bands asunder, he was driven of the demon into the deserts. 8:30. And Jesus asked him, What is thy name? And he said, Legion; for many demons were entered into him. 8:31. And they entreated him that he would not command them to depart into the abyss. 8:32. Now there was there a herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they entreated him that he would give them leave to enter into them. And he gave them leave. 8:33. And the demons came out from the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd rushed down the steep into the lake, and were drowned. 8:34. And when they that fed them saw what had come to pass, they fled, and told it in the city and in the country. 8:35. And they went out to see what had come to pass; and they came to Jesus, and found the man, from whom the demons were gone out, sitting, clothed and in his right mind, at the feet of Jesus: and they were afraid. 8:36. And they that saw it told them how he that was possessed with demons was made whole. 8:37. And all the people of the country of the Gerasenes round about asked him to depart from them, for they were holden with great fear: and he entered into a boat, and returned. 8:38. But the man from whom the demons were gone out prayed him that he might be with him: but he sent him away, saying, 8:39. Return to thy house, and declare how great things God hath done for thee. And he went his way, publishing throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done for him. 8:40. And as Jesus returned, the multitude welcomed him; for they were all waiting for him. 8:41. And behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus' feet, and besought him to come into his house; 8:42. for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. But as he went the multitudes thronged him. 8:43. And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, who had spent all her living upon physicians, and could not be healed of any, 8:44. came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately the issue of her blood stanched. 8:45. And Jesus said, Who is it that touched me? And when all denied, Peter said, and they that were with him, Master, the multitudes press thee and crush thee. 8:46. But Jesus said, Some one did touch me; for I perceived that power had gone forth from me. 8:47. And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared in the presence of all the people for what cause she touched him, and how she was healed immediately. 8:48. And he said unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace. 8:49. While he yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying, Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the Teacher. 8:50. But Jesus hearing it, answered him, Fear not: only believe, and she shall be made whole. 8:51. And when he came to the house, he suffered not any man to enter in with him, save Peter, and John, and James, and the father of the maiden and her mother. 8:52. And all were weeping, and bewailing her: but he said, Weep not; for she is not dead, but sleepeth. 8:53. And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead. 8:54. But he, taking her by the hand, called, saying, Maiden, arise. 8:55. And her spirit returned, and she rose up immediately: and he commanded that something be given her to eat. 8:56. And her parents were amazed: but he charged them to tell no man what had been done. 9:1. And he called the twelve together, and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases. 9:2. And he sent them forth to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick. 9:3. And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staff, nor wallet, nor bread, nor money; neither have two coats. 9:4. And into whatsoever house ye enter, there abide, and thence depart. 9:5. And as many as receive you not, when ye depart from that city, shake off the dust from your feet for a testimony against them. 9:6. And they departed, and went throughout the villages, preaching the gospel, and healing everywhere. 9:7. Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done: and he was much perplexed, because that it was said by some, that John was risen from the dead; 9:8. and by some, that Elijah had appeared; and by others, that one of the old prophets was risen again. 9:9. And Herod said, John I beheaded: but who is this, about whom I hear such things? And he sought to see him. 9:10. And the apostles, when they were returned, declared unto him what things they had done. And he took them, and withdrew apart to a city called Bethsaida. 9:11. But the multitudes perceiving it followed him: and he welcomed them, and spake to them of the kingdom of God, and them that had need of healing he cured. 9:12. And the day began to wear away; and the twelve came, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the villages and country round about, and lodge, and get provisions: for we are here in a desert place. 9:13. But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more than five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy food for all this people. 9:14. For they were about five thousand men. And he said unto his disciples, Make them sit down in companies, about fifty each. 9:15. And they did so, and made them all sit down. 9:16. And he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake; and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude. 9:17. And they ate, and were all filled: and there was taken up that which remained over to them of broken pieces, twelve baskets. 9:18. And it came to pass, as he was praying apart, the disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Who do the multitudes say that I am? 9:19. And they answering said, John the Baptist; but others say, Elijah; and others, that one of the old prophets is risen again. 9:20. And he said unto them, But who say ye that I am? And Peter answering said, The Christ of God. 9:21. But he charged them, and commanded them to tell this to no man; 9:22. saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up. 9:23. And he said unto all, If any man would come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. 9:24. For whosoever would save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. 9:25. For what is a man profited, if he gain the whole world, and lose or forfeit his own self? 9:26. For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in his own glory, and the glory of the Father, and of the holy angels. 9:27. But I tell you of a truth, There are some of them that stand here, who shall in no wise taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God. 9:28. And it came to pass about eight days after these sayings, that he took with him Peter and John and James, and went up into the mountain to pray. 9:29. And as he was praying, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment became white and dazzling. 9:30. And behold, there talked with him two men, who were Moses and Elijah; 9:31. who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 9:32. Now Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: but when they were fully awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him. 9:33. And it came to pass, as they were parting from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah: not knowing what he said. 9:34. And while he said these things, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud. 9:35. And a voice came out of the cloud, saying, This is my Son, my chosen: hear ye him. 9:36. And when the voice came, Jesus was found alone. And they held their peace, and told no man in those days any of the things which they had seen. 9:37. And it came to pass, on the next day, when they were come down from the mountain, a great multitude met him. 9:38. And behold, a man from the multitude cried, saying, Teacher, I beseech thee to look upon my son; for he is mine only child: 9:39. and behold, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth, and it hardly departeth from him, bruising him sorely. 9:40. And I besought thy disciples to cast it out; and they could not. 9:41. And Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and bear with you? bring hither thy son. 9:42. And as he was yet a coming, the demon dashed him down, and tare him grievously. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father. 9:43. And they were all astonished at the majesty of God. But while all were marvelling at all the things which he did, he said unto his disciples, 9:44. Let these words sink into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered up into the hands of men. 9:45. But they understood not this saying, and it was concealed from them, that they should not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask him about this saying. 9:46. And there arose a reasoning among them, which of them was the greatest. 9:47. But when Jesus saw the reasoning of their heart, he took a little child, and set him by his side, 9:48. and said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this little child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same is great. 9:49. And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out demons in thy name; and we forbade him, because he followeth not with us. 9:50. But Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against you is for you.

Since many have undertaken to set in order a narrative concerning those matters which have been fulfilled among us, 2. even as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word delivered them to us, 3. it seemed good to me also, having traced the course of all things accurately from the first, to write to you in order, most excellent Theophilus; 4. that you might know the certainty concerning the things in which you were instructed. 5. There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the priestly division of Abijah. He had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. 6. They were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord. 7. But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they both were well advanced in years. 8. Now while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his division, 9. according to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to enter into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10. The whole multitude of the people were praying outside at the hour of incense. 11. An angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 12. Zacharias was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him. 13. But the angel said to him, “Don’t be afraid, Zacharias, because your request has been heard, and your wife, Elizabeth, will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. 14. You will have joy and gladness; and many will rejoice at his birth. 15. For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and he will drink no wine nor strong drink. He will be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. 16. He will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord, their God. 17. He will go before him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to prepare a people prepared for the Lord.” 18. Zacharias said to the angel, “How can I be sure of this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.” 19. The angel answered him, “I am Gabriel, who stands in the presence of God. I was sent to speak to you, and to bring you this good news. 20. Behold, you will be silent and not able to speak, until the day that these things will happen, because you didn’t believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.” 21. The people were waiting for Zacharias, and they marveled that he delayed in the temple. 22. When he came out, he could not speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple. He continued making signs to them, and remained mute. 23. When the days of his service were fulfilled, he departed to his house. 24. After these days Elizabeth, his wife, conceived, and she hid herself five months, saying, 25. “Thus has the Lord done to me in the days in which he looked at me, to take away my reproach among men.” 26. Now in the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, 27. to a virgin pledged to be married to a man whose name was Joseph, of David’s house. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28. Having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, you highly favored one! The Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women!” 29. But when she saw him, she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered what kind of salutation this might be. 30. The angel said to her, “Don’t be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31. Behold, you will conceive in your womb, and give birth to a son, and will call his name ‘Jesus.’ 32. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father, David, 33. and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever. There will be no end to his Kingdom.” 34. Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, seeing I am a virgin?” 35. The angel answered her, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore also the holy one who is born from you will be called the Son of God. 36. Behold, Elizabeth, your relative, also has conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. 37. For nothing spoken by God is impossible.” 38. Mary said, “Behold, the servant of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word.” The angel departed from her. 39. Mary arose in those days and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Judah, 40. and entered into the house of Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth. 41. When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42. She called out with a loud voice, and said, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! 43. Why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44. For behold, when the voice of your greeting came into my ears, the baby leaped in my womb for joy! 45. Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of the things which have been spoken to her from the Lord!” 46. Mary said, “My soul magnifies the Lord. 47. My spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior, 48. for he has looked at the humble state of his servant. For behold, from now on, all generations will call me blessed. 49. For he who is mighty has done great things for me. Holy is his name. 50. His mercy is for generations of generations on those who fear him. 51. He has shown strength with his arm. He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. 52. He has put down princes from their thrones. And has exalted the lowly. 53. He has filled the hungry with good things. He has sent the rich away empty. 54. He has given help to Israel, his servant, that he might remember mercy, 55. As he spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and his offspring forever.” 56. Mary stayed with her about three months, and then returned to her house. 57. Now the time that Elizabeth should give birth was fulfilled, and she gave birth to a son. 58. Her neighbors and her relatives heard that the Lord had magnified his mercy towards her, and they rejoiced with her. 59. On the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him Zacharias, after the name of his father. 60. His mother answered, “Not so; but he will be called John.” 61. They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who is called by this name.” 62. They made signs to his father, what he would have him called. 63. He asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, “His name is John.” They all marveled. 64. His mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue freed, and he spoke, blessing God. 65. Fear came on all who lived around them, and all these sayings were talked about throughout all the hill country of Judea. 66. All who heard them laid them up in their heart, saying, “What then will this child be?” The hand of the Lord was with him. 67. His father, Zacharias, was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying, 68. “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people; 69. and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David 70. (as he spoke by the mouth of his holy prophets who have been from of old), 71. salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all who hate us; 72. to show mercy towards our fathers, to remember his holy covenant, 73. the oath which he swore to Abraham, our father, 74. to grant to us that we, being delivered out of the hand of our enemies, should serve him without fear, 75. In holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life. 76. And you, child, will be called a prophet of the Most High, for you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways, 77. to give knowledge of salvation to his people by the remission of their sins, 78. because of the tender mercy of our God, whereby the dawn from on high will visit us, 79. to shine on those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death; to guide our feet into the way of peace.” 80. The child was growing, and becoming strong in spirit, and was in the desert until the day of his public appearance to Israel. 2:1. Now in those days, a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled. 2:2. This was the first enrollment made when Quirinius was governor of Syria. 2:3. All went to enroll themselves, everyone to his own city. 2:4. Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to David’s city, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David; 2:5. to enroll himself with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him as wife, being pregnant. 2:6. While they were there, the day had come for her to give birth. 2:7. She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a feeding trough, because there was no room for them in the inn. 2:8. There were shepherds in the same country staying in the field, and keeping watch by night over their flock. 2:9. Behold, an angel of the Lord stood by them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 2:10. The angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be to all the people. 2:11. For there is born to you today, in David’s city, a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 2:12. This is the sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth, lying in a feeding trough.” 2:13. Suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly army praising God, and saying, 2:14. “Glory to God in the highest, on earth peace, good will toward men.” 2:15. When the angels went away from them into the sky, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem, now, and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” 2:16. They came with haste, and found both Mary and Joseph, and the baby was lying in the feeding trough. 2:17. When they saw it, they publicized widely the saying which was spoken to them about this child. 2:18. All who heard it wondered at the things which were spoken to them by the shepherds. 2:19. But Mary kept all these sayings, pondering them in her heart. 2:20. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, just as it was told them. 2:21. When eight days were fulfilled for the circumcision of the child, his name was called Jesus, which was given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. 2:22. When the days of their purification according to the law of Moses were fulfilled, they brought him up to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord 2:23. (as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”), 2:24. and to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, “A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.” 2:25. Behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon. This man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. 2:26. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 2:27. He came in the Spirit into the temple. When the parents brought in the child, Jesus, that they might do concerning him according to the custom of the law, 2:28. then he received him into his arms, and blessed God, and said, 2:29. “Now you are releasing your servant, Master, according to your word, in peace; 2:30. for my eyes have seen your salvation, 2:31. which you have prepared before the face of all peoples; 2:32. a light for revelation to the nations, and the glory of your people Israel.” 2:33. Joseph and his mother were marveling at the things which were spoken concerning him, 2:34. and Simeon blessed them, and said to Mary, his mother, “Behold, this child is set for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and for a sign which is spoken against. 2:35. Yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” 2:36. There was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher (she was of a great age, having lived with a husband seven years from her virginity, 2:37. and she had been a widow for about eighty-four years), who didn’t depart from the temple, worshiping with fastings and petitions night and day. 2:38. Coming up at that very hour, she gave thanks to the Lord, and spoke of him to all those who were looking for redemption in Jerusalem. 2:39. When they had accomplished all things that were according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city, Nazareth. 2:40. The child was growing, and was becoming strong in spirit, being filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him. 2:41. His parents went every year to Jerusalem at the feast of the Passover. 2:42. When he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according to the custom of the feast, 2:43. and when they had fulfilled the days, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. Joseph and his mother didn’t know it, 2:44. but supposing him to be in the company, they went a day’s journey, and they looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances. 2:45. When they didn’t find him, they returned to Jerusalem, looking for him. 2:46. After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the middle of the teachers, both listening to them, and asking them questions. 2:47. All who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. 2:48. When they saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us this way? Behold, your father and I were anxiously looking for you.” 2:49. He said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Didn’t you know that I must be in my Father’s house?” 2:50. They didn’t understand the saying which he spoke to them. 2:51. And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth. He was subject to them, and his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. 2:52. And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men. 3:1. Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene, 3:2. in the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness. 3:3. He came into all the region around the Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for remission of sins. 3:4. As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, ‘Make ready the way of the Lord. Make his paths straight. 3:5. Every valley will be filled. Every mountain and hill will be brought low. The crooked will become straight, and the rough ways smooth. 3:6. All flesh will see God’s salvation.’” 3:7. He said therefore to the multitudes who went out to be baptized by him, “You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 3:8. Therefore produce fruits worthy of repentance, and don’t begin to say among yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father;’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones! 3:9. Even now the ax also lies at the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that doesn’t produce good fruit is cut down, and thrown into the fire.” 3:10. The multitudes asked him, “What then must we do?” 3:11. He answered them, “He who has two coats, let him give to him who has none. He who has food, let him do likewise.” 3:12. Tax collectors also came to be baptized, and they said to him, “Teacher, what must we do?” 3:13. He said to them, “Collect no more than that which is appointed to you.” 3:14. Soldiers also asked him, saying, “What about us? What must we do?” He said to them, “Extort from no one by violence, neither accuse anyone wrongfully. Be content with your wages.” 3:15. As the people were in expectation, and all men reasoned in their hearts concerning John, whether perhaps he was the Christ, 3:16. John answered them all, “I indeed baptize you with water, but he comes who is mightier than I, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to loosen. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire, 3:17. whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor, and will gather the wheat into his barn; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.” 3:18. Then with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people, 3:19. but Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias, his brother’s wife, and for all the evil things which Herod had done, 3:20. added this also to them all, that he shut up John in prison. 3:21. Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus also had been baptized, and was praying. The sky was opened, 3:22. and the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form like a dove on him; and a voice came out of the sky, saying “You are my beloved Son. In you I am well pleased.” 3:23. Jesus himself, when he began to teach, was about thirty years old, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli, 3:24. the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph, 3:25. the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, the son of Naggai, 3:26. the son of Maath, the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein, the son of Joseph, the son of Judah, 3:27. the son of Joanan, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, the son of Neri, 3:28. the son of Melchi, the son of Addi, the son of Cosam, the son of Elmodam, the son of Er, 3:29. the son of Jose, the son of Eliezer, the son of Jorim, the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, 3:30. the son of Simeon, the son of Judah, the son of Joseph, the son of Jonan, the son of Eliakim, 3:31. the son of Melea, the son of Menan, the son of Mattatha, the son of Nathan, the son of David, 3:32. the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Salmon, the son of Nahshon, 3:33. the son of Amminadab, the son of Aram, the son of Hezron, the son of Perez, the son of Judah, 3:34. the son of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, the son of Terah, the son of Nahor, 3:35. the son of Serug, the son of Reu, the son of Peleg, the son of Eber, the son of Shelah, 3:36. the son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech, 3:37. the son of Methuselah, the son of Enoch, the son of Jared, the son of Mahalaleel, the son of Cainan, 3:38. the son of Enos, the son of Seth, the son of Adam, the son of God. 4:1. Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness 4:2. for forty days, being tempted by the devil. He ate nothing in those days. Afterward, when they were completed, he was hungry. 4:3. The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread.” 4:4. Jesus answered him, saying, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.’” 4:5. The devil, leading him up on a high mountain, showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 4:6. The devil said to him, “I will give you all this authority, and their glory, for it has been delivered to me; and I give it to whomever I want. 4:7. If you therefore will worship before me, it will all be yours.” 4:8. Jesus answered him, “Get behind me Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and you shall serve him only.’” 4:9. He led him to Jerusalem, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, cast yourself down from here, 4:10. for it is written, ‘He will put his angels in charge of you, to guard you;’ 4:11. and, ‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest perhaps you dash your foot against a stone.’” 4:12. Jesus answering, said to him, “It has been said, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’” 4:13. When the devil had completed every temptation, he departed from him until another time. 4:14. Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee, and news about him spread through all the surrounding area. 4:15. He taught in their synagogues, being glorified by all. 4:16. He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. He entered, as was his custom, into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 4:17. The book of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. He opened the book, and found the place where it was written, 4:18. “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to heal the broken hearted, to proclaim release to the captives, recovering of sight to the blind, to deliver those who are crushed, 4:19. and to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.” 4:20. He closed the book, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fastened on him. 4:21. He began to tell them, “Today, this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” 4:22. All testified about him, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth, and they said, “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” 4:23. He said to them, “Doubtless you will tell me this parable, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have heard done at Capernaum, do also here in your hometown.’” 4:24. He said, “Most certainly I tell you, no prophet is acceptable in his hometown. 4:25. But truly I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up three years and six months, when a great famine came over all the land. 4:26. Elijah was sent to none of them, except to Zarephath, in the land of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 4:27. There were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed, except Naaman, the Syrian.” 4:28. They were all filled with wrath in the synagogue, as they heard these things. 4:29. They rose up, threw him out of the city, and led him to the brow of the hill that their city was built on, that they might throw him off the cliff. 4:30. But he, passing through the middle of them, went his way. 4:31. He came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. He was teaching them on the Sabbath day, 4:32. and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word was with authority. 4:33. In the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, 4:34. saying, “Ah! what have we to do with you, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know you who you are: the Holy One of God!” 4:35. Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” When the demon had thrown him down in the middle of them, he came out of him, having done him no harm. 4:36. Amazement came on all, and they spoke together, one with another, saying, “What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” 4:37. News about him went out into every place of the surrounding region. 4:38. He rose up from the synagogue, and entered into Simon’s house. Simon’s mother-in-law was afflicted with a great fever, and they begged him for her. 4:39. He stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her. Immediately she rose up and served them. 4:40. When the sun was setting, all those who had any sick with various diseases brought them to him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them. 4:41. Demons also came out of many, crying out, and saying, “You are the Christ, the Son of God!” Rebuking them, he didn’t allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ. 4:42. When it was day, he departed and went into an uninhabited place, and the multitudes looked for him, and came to him, and held on to him, so that he wouldn’t go away from them. 4:43. But he said to them, “I must preach the good news of God’s Kingdom to the other cities also. For this reason I have been sent.” 4:44. He was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee. 5:1. Now while the multitude pressed on him and heard the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret. 5:2. He saw two boats standing by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them, and were washing their nets. 5:3. He entered into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little from the land. He sat down and taught the multitudes from the boat. 5:4. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep, and let down your nets for a catch.” 5:5. Simon answered him, “Master, we worked all night, and took nothing; but at your word I will let down the net.” 5:6. When they had done this, they caught a great multitude of fish, and their net was breaking. 5:7. They beckoned to their partners in the other boat, that they should come and help them. They came, and filled both boats, so that they began to sink. 5:8. But Simon Peter, when he saw it, fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, Lord.” 5:9. For he was amazed, and all who were with him, at the catch of fish which they had caught; 5:10. and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid. From now on you will be catching people alive.” 5:11. When they had brought their boats to land, they left everything, and followed him. 5:12. While he was in one of the cities, behold, there was a man full of leprosy. When he saw Jesus, he fell on his face, and begged him, saying, “Lord, if you want to, you can make me clean.” 5:13. He stretched out his hand, and touched him, saying, “I want to. Be made clean.” Immediately the leprosy left him. 5:14. He commanded him to tell no one, “But go your way, and show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing according to what Moses commanded, for a testimony to them.” 5:15. But the report concerning him spread much more, and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities. 5:16. But he withdrew himself into the desert, and prayed. 5:17. On one of those days, he was teaching; and there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had come out of every village of Galilee, Judea, and Jerusalem. The power of the Lord was with him to heal them. 5:18. Behold, men brought a paralyzed man on a cot, and they sought to bring him in to lay before Jesus. 5:19. Not finding a way to bring him in because of the multitude, they went up to the housetop, and let him down through the tiles with his cot into the middle before Jesus. 5:20. Seeing their faith, he said to him, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.” 5:21. The scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, “Who is this that speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?” 5:22. But Jesus, perceiving their thoughts, answered them, “Why are you reasoning so in your hearts? 5:23. Which is easier to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you;’ or to say, ‘Arise and walk?’ 5:24. But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins” (he said to the paralyzed man), “I tell you, arise, and take up your cot, and go to your house.” 5:25. Immediately he rose up before them, and took up that which he was laying on, and departed to his house, glorifying God. 5:26. Amazement took hold on all, and they glorified God. They were filled with fear, saying, “We have seen strange things today.” 5:27. After these things he went out, and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the tax office, and said to him, “Follow me!” 5:28. He left everything, and rose up and followed him. 5:29. Levi made a great feast for him in his house. There was a great crowd of tax collectors and others who were reclining with them. 5:30. Their scribes and the Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and sinners?” 5:31. Jesus answered them, “Those who are healthy have no need for a physician, but those who are sick do. 5:32. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” 5:33. They said to him, “Why do John’s disciples often fast and pray, likewise also the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink?” 5:34. He said to them, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast, while the bridegroom is with them? 5:35. But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them. Then they will fast in those days.” 5:36. He also told a parable to them. “No one puts a piece from a new garment on an old garment, or else he will tear the new, and also the piece from the new will not match the old. 5:37. No one puts new wine into old wine skins, or else the new wine will burst the skins, and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. 5:38. But new wine must be put into fresh wine skins, and both are preserved. 5:39. No man having drunk old wine immediately desires new, for he says, ‘The old is better.’” 6:1. Now on the second Sabbath after the first, he was going through the grain fields. His disciples plucked the heads of grain and ate, rubbing them in their hands. 6:2. But some of the Pharisees said to them, “Why do you do that which is not lawful to do on the Sabbath day?” 6:3. Jesus, answering them, said, “Haven’t you read what David did when he was hungry, he, and those who were with him; 6:4. how he entered into God’s house, and took and ate the show bread, and gave also to those who were with him, which is not lawful to eat except for the priests alone?” 6:5. He said to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.” 6:6. It also happened on another Sabbath that he entered into the synagogue and taught. There was a man there, and his right hand was withered. 6:7. The scribes and the Pharisees watched him, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, that they might find an accusation against him. 6:8. But he knew their thoughts; and he said to the man who had the withered hand, “Rise up, and stand in the middle.” He arose and stood. 6:9. Then Jesus said to them, “I will ask you something: Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good, or to do harm? To save a life, or to kill?” 6:10. He looked around at them all, and said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did, and his hand was restored as sound as the other. 6:11. But they were filled with rage, and talked with one another about what they might do to Jesus. 6:12. In these days, he went out to the mountain to pray, and he continued all night in prayer to God. 6:13. When it was day, he called his disciples, and from them he chose twelve, whom he also named apostles: 6:14. Simon, whom he also named Peter; Andrew, his brother; James; John; Philip; Bartholomew; 6:15. Matthew; Thomas; James, the son of Alphaeus; Simon, who was called the Zealot; 6:16. Judas the son of James; and Judas Iscariot, who also became a traitor. 6:17. He came down with them, and stood on a level place, with a crowd of his disciples, and a great number of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; 6:18. as well as those who were troubled by unclean spirits, and they were being healed. 6:19. All the multitude sought to touch him, for power came out of him and healed them all. 6:20. He lifted up his eyes to his disciples, and said, “Blessed are you who are poor, God’s Kingdom is yours. 6:21. Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. 6:22. Blessed are you when men shall hate you, and when they shall exclude and mock you, and throw out your name as evil, for the Son of Man’s sake. 6:23. Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven, for their fathers did the same thing to the prophets. 6:24. “But woe to you who are rich! For you have received your consolation. 6:25. Woe to you, you who are full now, for you will be hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep. 6:26. Woe, when men speak well of you, for their fathers did the same thing to the false prophets. 6:27. “But I tell you who hear: love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 6:28. bless those who curse you, and pray for those who mistreat you. 6:29. To him who strikes you on the cheek, offer also the other; and from him who takes away your cloak, don’t withhold your coat also. 6:30. Give to everyone who asks you, and don’t ask him who takes away your goods to give them back again. 6:31. “As you would like people to do to you, do exactly so to them. 6:32. If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 6:33. If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 6:34. If you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive back as much. 6:35. But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing back; and your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High; for he is kind toward the unthankful and evil. 6:36. “Therefore be merciful, even as your Father is also merciful. 6:37. Don’t judge, and you won’t be judged. Don’t condemn, and you won’t be condemned. Set free, and you will be set free. 6:38. “Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, will be given to you. For with the same measure you measure it will be measured back to you.” 6:39. He spoke a parable to them. “Can the blind guide the blind? Won’t they both fall into a pit? 6:40. A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher. 6:41. Why do you see the speck of chaff that is in your brother’s eye, but don’t consider the beam that is in your own eye? 6:42. Or how can you tell your brother, ‘Brother, let me remove the speck of chaff that is in your eye,’ when you yourself don’t see the beam that is in your own eye? You hypocrite! First remove the beam from your own eye, and then you can see clearly to remove the speck of chaff that is in your brother’s eye. 6:43. For there is no good tree that produces rotten fruit; nor again a rotten tree that produces good fruit. 6:44. For each tree is known by its own fruit. For people don’t gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush. 6:45. The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings out that which is good, and the evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart brings out that which is evil, for out of the abundance of the heart, his mouth speaks. 6:46. “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and don’t do the things which I say? 6:47. Everyone who comes to me, and hears my words, and does them, I will show you who he is like. 6:48. He is like a man building a house, who dug and went deep, and laid a foundation on the rock. When a flood arose, the stream broke against that house, and could not shake it, because it was founded on the rock. 6:49. But he who hears, and doesn’t do, is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream broke, and immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.” 7:1. After he had finished speaking in the hearing of the people, he entered into Capernaum. 7:2. A certain centurion’s servant, who was dear to him, was sick and at the point of death. 7:3. When he heard about Jesus, he sent to him elders of the Jews, asking him to come and save his servant. 7:4. When they came to Jesus, they begged him earnestly, saying, “He is worthy for you to do this for him, 7:5. for he loves our nation, and he built our synagogue for us.” 7:6. Jesus went with them. When he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying to him, “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, for I am not worthy for you to come under my roof. 7:7. Therefore I didn’t even think myself worthy to come to you; but say the word, and my servant will be healed. 7:8. For I also am a man placed under authority, having under myself soldiers. I tell this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 7:9. When Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him, and turned and said to the multitude who followed him, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith, no, not in Israel.” 7:10. Those who were sent, returning to the house, found that the servant who had been sick was well. 7:11. Soon afterwards, he went to a city called Nain. Many of his disciples, along with a great multitude, went with him. 7:12. Now when he came near to the gate of the city, behold, one who was dead was carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow. Many people of the city were with her. 7:13. When the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said to her, “Don’t cry.” 7:14. He came near and touched the coffin, and the bearers stood still. He said, “Young man, I tell you, arise!” 7:15. He who was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. 7:16. Fear took hold of all, and they glorified God, saying, “A great prophet has arisen among us!” and, “God has visited his people!” 7:17. This report went out concerning him in the whole of Judea, and in all the surrounding region. 7:18. The disciples of John told him about all these things. 7:19. John, calling to himself two of his disciples, sent them to Jesus, saying, “Are you the one who is coming, or should we look for another?” 7:20. When the men had come to him, they said, “John the Baptizer has sent us to you, saying, ‘Are you he who comes, or should we look for another?’” 7:21. In that hour he cured many of diseases and plagues and evil spirits; and to many who were blind he gave sight. 7:22. Jesus answered them, “Go and tell John the things which you have seen and heard: that the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them. 7:23. Blessed is he who finds no occasion for stumbling in me.” 7:24. When John’s messengers had departed, he began to tell the multitudes about John, “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 7:25. But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft clothing? Behold, those who are gorgeously dressed, and live delicately, are in kings’ courts. 7:26. But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and much more than a prophet. 7:27. This is he of whom it is written, ‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.’ 7:28. “For I tell you, among those who are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptizer, yet he who is least in God’s Kingdom is greater than he.” 7:29. When all the people and the tax collectors heard this, they declared God to be just, having been baptized with John’s baptism. 7:30. But the Pharisees and the lawyers rejected the counsel of God, not being baptized by him themselves. 7:31. “To what then will I liken the people of this generation? What are they like? 7:32. They are like children who sit in the marketplace, and call to one another, saying, ‘We piped to you, and you didn’t dance. We mourned, and you didn’t weep.’ 7:33. For John the Baptizer came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ 7:34. The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Behold, a gluttonous man, and a drunkard; a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ 7:35. Wisdom is justified by all her children.” 7:36. One of the Pharisees invited him to eat with him. He entered into the Pharisee’s house, and sat at the table. 7:37. Behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that he was reclining in the Pharisee’s house, she brought an alabaster jar of ointment. 7:38. Standing behind at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears, and she wiped them with the hair of her head, kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment. 7:39. Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he said to himself, “This man, if he were a prophet, would have perceived who and what kind of woman this is who touches him, that she is a sinner.” 7:40. Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.” He said, “Teacher, say on.” 7:41. “A certain lender had two debtors. The one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 7:42. When they couldn’t pay, he forgave them both. Which of them therefore will love him most?” 7:43. Simon answered, “He, I suppose, to whom he forgave the most.” He said to him, “You have judged correctly.” 7:44. Turning to the woman, he said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered into your house, and you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head. 7:45. You gave me no kiss, but she, since the time I came in, has not ceased to kiss my feet. 7:46. You didn’t anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. 7:47. Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, the same loves little.” 7:48. He said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” 7:49. Those who sat at the table with him began to say to themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?” 7:50. He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.” 8:1. Soon afterwards, he went about through cities and villages, preaching and bringing the good news of God’s Kingdom. With him were the twelve, 8:2. and certain women who had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities: Mary who was called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out; 8:3. and Joanna, the wife of Chuzas, Herod’s steward; Susanna; and many others; who served them from their possessions. 8:4. When a great multitude came together, and people from every city were coming to him, he spoke by a parable. 8:5. “The farmer went out to sow his seed. As he sowed, some fell along the road, and it was trampled under foot, and the birds of the sky devoured it. 8:6. Other seed fell on the rock, and as soon as it grew, it withered away, because it had no moisture. 8:7. Other fell amid the thorns, and the thorns grew with it, and choked it. 8:8. Other fell into the good ground, and grew, and produced one hundred times as much fruit.” As he said these things, he called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear!” 8:9. Then his disciples asked him, “What does this parable mean?” 8:10. He said, “To you it is given to know the mysteries of God’s Kingdom, but to the rest in parables; that ‘seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.’ 8:11. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 8:12. Those along the road are those who hear, then the devil comes, and takes away the word from their heart, that they may not believe and be saved. 8:13. Those on the rock are they who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; but these have no root, who believe for a while, then fall away in time of temptation. 8:14. That which fell among the thorns, these are those who have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity. 8:15. That in the good ground, these are such as in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, hold it tightly, and produces fruit with patience. 8:16. “No one, when he has lit a lamp, covers it with a container, or puts it under a bed; but puts it on a stand, that those who enter in may see the light. 8:17. For nothing is hidden, that will not be revealed; nor anything secret, that will not be known and come to light. 8:18. Be careful therefore how you hear. For whoever has, to him will be given; and whoever doesn’t have, from him will be taken away even that which he thinks he has.” 8:19. His mother and brothers came to him, and they could not come near him for the crowd. 8:20. Some people told him, “Your mother and your brothers stand outside, desiring to see you.” 8:21. But he answered them, “My mother and my brothers are these who hear the word of God, and do it.” 8:22. Now on one of those days, he entered into a boat, himself and his disciples, and he said to them, “Let’s go over to the other side of the lake.” So they launched out. 8:23. But as they sailed, he fell asleep. A wind storm came down on the lake, and they were taking on dangerous amounts of water. 8:24. They came to him, and awoke him, saying, “Master, master, we are dying!” He awoke, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water, and they ceased, and it was calm. 8:25. He said to them, “Where is your faith?” Being afraid they marveled, saying to one another, “Who is this, then, that he commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him?” 8:26. They arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is opposite Galilee. 8:27. When Jesus stepped ashore, a certain man out of the city who had demons for a long time met him. He wore no clothes, and didn’t live in a house, but in the tombs. 8:28. When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, “What do I have to do with you, Jesus, you Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don’t torment me!” 8:29. For Jesus was commanding the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For the unclean spirit had often seized the man. He was kept under guard, and bound with chains and fetters. Breaking the bands apart, he was driven by the demon into the desert. 8:30. Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He said, “Legion,” for many demons had entered into him. 8:31. They begged him that he would not command them to go into the abyss. 8:32. Now there was there a herd of many pigs feeding on the mountain, and they begged him that he would allow them to enter into those. He allowed them. 8:33. The demons came out of the man, and entered into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake, and were drowned. 8:34. When those who fed them saw what had happened, they fled, and told it in the city and in the country. 8:35. People went out to see what had happened. They came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet, clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 8:36. Those who saw it told them how he who had been possessed by demons was healed. 8:37. All the people of the surrounding country of the Gadarenes asked him to depart from them, for they were very much afraid. He entered into the boat, and returned. 8:38. But the man from whom the demons had gone out begged him that he might go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 8:39. “Return to your house, and declare what great things God has done for you.” He went his way, proclaiming throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him. 8:40. When Jesus returned, the multitude welcomed him, for they were all waiting for him. 8:41. Behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue. He fell down at Jesus’ feet, and begged him to come into his house, 8:42. for he had an only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she was dying. But as he went, the multitudes pressed against him. 8:43. A woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years, who had spent all her living on physicians, and could not be healed by any, 8:44. came behind him, and touched the fringe of his cloak, and immediately the flow of her blood stopped. 8:45. Jesus said, “Who touched me?” When all denied it, Peter and those with him said, “Master, the multitudes press and jostle you, and you say, ‘Who touched me?’” 8:46. But Jesus said, “Someone did touch me, for I perceived that power has gone out of me.” 8:47. When the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling, and falling down before him declared to him in the presence of all the people the reason why she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately. 8:48. He said to her, “Daughter, cheer up. Your faith has made you well. Go in peace.” 8:49. While he still spoke, one from the ruler of the synagogue’s house came, saying to him, “Your daughter is dead. Don’t trouble the Teacher.” 8:50. But Jesus hearing it, answered him, “Don’t be afraid. Only believe, and she will be healed.” 8:51. When he came to the house, he didn’t allow anyone to enter in, except Peter, John, James, the father of the child, and her mother. 8:52. All were weeping and mourning her, but he said, “Don’t weep. She isn’t dead, but sleeping.” 8:53. They were ridiculing him, knowing that she was dead. 8:54. But he put them all outside, and taking her by the hand, he called, saying, “Child, arise!” 8:55. Her spirit returned, and she rose up immediately. He commanded that something be given to her to eat. 8:56. Her parents were amazed, but he commanded them to tell no one what had been done. 9:1. He called the twelve together, and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases. 9:2. He sent them out to preach God’s Kingdom and to heal the sick. 9:3. He said to them, “Take nothing for your journey, neither staffs, nor wallet, nor bread, nor money; neither have two coats apiece. 9:4. Into whatever house you enter, stay there, and depart from there. 9:5. As many as don’t receive you, when you depart from that city, shake off even the dust from your feet for a testimony against them.” 9:6. They departed, and went throughout the villages, preaching the Good News, and healing everywhere. 9:7. Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him; and he was very perplexed, because it was said by some that John had risen from the dead, 9:8. and by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the old prophets had risen again. 9:9. Herod said, “John I beheaded, but who is this, about whom I hear such things?” He sought to see him. 9:10. The apostles, when they had returned, told him what things they had done. He took them, and withdrew apart to a deserted place of a city called Bethsaida. 9:11. But the multitudes, perceiving it, followed him. He welcomed them, and spoke to them of God’s Kingdom, and he cured those who needed healing. 9:12. The day began to wear away; and the twelve came, and said to him, “Send the multitude away, that they may go into the surrounding villages and farms, and lodge, and get food, for we are here in a deserted place.” 9:13. But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless we should go and buy food for all these people.” 9:14. For they were about five thousand men. He said to his disciples, “Make them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” 9:15. They did so, and made them all sit down. 9:16. He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to the sky, he blessed them, and broke them, and gave them to the disciples to set before the multitude. 9:17. They ate, and were all filled. They gathered up twelve baskets of broken pieces that were left over. 9:18. As he was praying alone, the disciples were with him, and he asked them, “Who do the multitudes say that I am?” 9:19. They answered, “‘John the Baptizer,’ but others say, ‘Elijah,’ and others, that one of the old prophets is risen again.” 9:20. He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered, “The Christ of God.” 9:21. But he warned them, and commanded them to tell this to no one, 9:22. saying, “The Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up.” 9:23. He said to all, “If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. 9:24. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever will lose his life for my sake, the same will save it. 9:25. For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses or forfeits his own self? 9:26. For whoever will be ashamed of me and of my words, of him will the Son of Man be ashamed, when he comes in his glory, and the glory of the Father, and of the holy angels. 9:27. But I tell you the truth: There are some of those who stand here, who will in no way taste of death, until they see God’s Kingdom.” 9:28. About eight days after these sayings, he took with him Peter, John, and James, and went up onto the mountain to pray. 9:29. As he was praying, the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became white and dazzling. 9:30. Behold, two men were talking with him, who were Moses and Elijah, 9:31. who appeared in glory, and spoke of his departure, which he was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 9:32. Now Peter and those who were with him were heavy with sleep, but when they were fully awake, they saw his glory, and the two men who stood with him. 9:33. As they were parting from him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here. Let’s make three tents: one for you, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah,” not knowing what he said. 9:34. While he said these things, a cloud came and overshadowed them, and they were afraid as they entered into the cloud. 9:35. A voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him!” 9:36. When the voice came, Jesus was found alone. They were silent, and told no one in those days any of the things which they had seen. 9:37. On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great multitude met him. 9:38. Behold, a man from the crowd called out, saying, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. 9:39. Behold, a spirit takes him, he suddenly cries out, and it convulses him so that he foams, and it hardly departs from him, bruising him severely. 9:40. I begged your disciples to cast it out, and they couldn’t.” 9:41. Jesus answered, “Faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.” 9:42. While he was still coming, the demon threw him down and convulsed him violently. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father. 9:43. They were all astonished at the majesty of God. But while all were marveling at all the things which Jesus did, he said to his disciples, 9:44. “Let these words sink into your ears, for the Son of Man will be delivered up into the hands of men.” 9:45. But they didn’t understand this saying. It was concealed from them, that they should not perceive it, and they were afraid to ask him about this saying. 9:46. There arose an argument among them about which of them was the greatest. 9:47. Jesus, perceiving the reasoning of their hearts, took a little child, and set him by his side, 9:48. and said to them, “Whoever receives this little child in my name receives me. Whoever receives me receives him who sent me. For whoever is least among you all, this one will be great.” 9:49. John answered, “Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we forbade him, because he doesn’t follow with us.” 9:50. Jesus said to him, “Don’t forbid him, for he who is not against us is for us.”

1. Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us, 2. Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word; 3. It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus, 4. That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed. 5. There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. 6. And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. 7. And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years. 8. And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course, 9. According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord. 10. And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense. 11. And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 12. And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him. 13. But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. 14. And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. 15. For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb. 16. And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. 17. And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord. ^{to the wisdom: or, by the wisdom} 18. And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years. 19. And, behold, thou shalt be dumb, and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall be performed, because thou believest not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season. 21. And the people waited for Zacharias, and marvelled that he tarried so long in the temple. 22. And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: for he beckoned unto them, and remained speechless. 23. And it came to pass, that, as soon as the days of his ministration were accomplished, he departed to his own house. 24. And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying, 25. Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men. 26. And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, 27. To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. 28. And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. 30. And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. 34. Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? 35. And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God. 36. And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. 37. For with God nothing shall be impossible. 38. And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her. 39. And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda; 40. And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. 41. And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: 42. And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. 43. And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? 44. For, lo, as soon as the voice of thy salutation sounded in mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. 45. And blessed is she that believed: for there shall be a performance of those things which were told her from the Lord. ^{that: or, which believed that there} 46. And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, 47. And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. 48. For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. 49. For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name. 50. And his mercy is on them that fear him from generation to generation. 51. He hath shewed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. 52. He hath put down the mighty from their seats, and exalted them of low degree. 53. He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich he hath sent empty away. 54. He hath holpen his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy; 55. As he spake to our fathers, to Abraham, and to his seed for ever. 56. And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned to her own house. 57. Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son. 58. And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her. 59. And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father. 60. And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John. 61. And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name. 62. And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called. 63. And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all. 64. And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God. 65. And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea. ^{sayings: or, things} 66. And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him. 67. And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying, 68. Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people, 69. And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David; 70. As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began: 71. That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; 72. To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant; 73. The oath which he sware to our father Abraham, 74. That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear, 75. In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life. 76. And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; 77. To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins, ^{by: or, for} 78. Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us, ^{tender: or, bowels of the mercy dayspring: or, Sunrising, or, branch, Zac.3.8, esay II, I Malich.4.2, numb.24.17} 79. To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace. 80. And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel. 2:1. And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. ^{taxed: or, enrolled} 2:2. ( And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) 2:3. And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. 2:4. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) 2:5. To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. 2:6. And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. 2:7. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn. 2:8. And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. ^{watch: or, the night watches} 2:9. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. 2:10. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 2:11. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. 2:12. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. 2:13. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 2:14. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. 2:15. And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. ^{the shepherds: Gr. the men the shepherds} 2:16. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. 2:17. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. 2:18. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. 2:19. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart. 2:20. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them. 2:21. And when eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS, which was so named of the angel before he was conceived in the womb. 2:22. And when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord; 2:23. (As it is written in the law of the Lord, Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord;) 2:24. And to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the law of the Lord, A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons. 2:25. And, behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon; and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel: and the Holy Ghost was upon him. 2:26. And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord's Christ. 2:27. And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, 2:28. Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, 2:29. Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: 2:30. For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, 2:31. Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; 2:32. A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel. 2:33. And Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him. 2:34. And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against; 2:35. (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. 2:36. And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser: she was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity; 2:37. And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day. 2:38. And she coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem. ^{Jerusalem: or, Israel} 2:39. And when they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth. 2:40. And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him. 2:41. Now his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover. 2:42. And when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast. 2:43. And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it. 2:44. But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance. 2:45. And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him. 2:46. And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions. 2:47. And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. 2:48. And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing. 2:49. And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business? 2:50. And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them. 2:51. And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart. 2:52. And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man. ^{stature: or, age} 3:1. Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene, ^{tetrarch: or, governor of four provinces} 3:2. Annas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came unto John the son of Zacharias in the wilderness. 3:3. And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins; 3:4. As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. 3:5. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth; 3:6. And all flesh shall see the salvation of God. 3:7. Then said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 3:8. Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham. ^{worthy of: or, meet for} 3:9. And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable. 3:18. And many other things in his exhortation preached he unto the people. 3:19. But Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip's wife, and for all the evils which Herod had done, 3:20. Added yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison. 3:21. Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, 3:22. And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased. 3:23. And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli, 3:24. And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, 4:2. Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered. 4:3. And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. 4:4. And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. 4:5. And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 4:6. And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it. 4:7. If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine. ^{worship me: or, fall down before me} 4:8. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. 4:9. For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee: 4:11. And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. 4:12. And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. 4:13. And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season. 4:14. And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about. 4:15. And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all. 4:16. And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. 4:17. And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, 4:18. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 4:19. To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. 4:20. And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. 4:21. And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. 4:22. And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son? 4:23. And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country. 4:24. And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country. 4:25. But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land; 4:26. But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow. 4:27. And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian. 4:28. And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, 4:29. And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong. ^{brow: or, edge} 4:30. But he passing through the midst of them went his way, 4:31. And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days. 4:32. And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power. 4:33. And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice, 4:34. Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God. ^{Let: or, Away} 4:35. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not. 4:36. And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out. 4:37. And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about. 4:38. And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon's house. And Simon's wife's mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her. 4:39. And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them. 4:40. Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them. 4:41. And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ. ^{to speak: or, to say that they knew him to be Christ} 4:42. And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them. 4:43. And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent. 4:44. And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee. 5:1. And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret, 5:2. And saw two ships standing by the lake: but the fishermen were gone out of them, and were washing their nets. 5:3. And he entered into one of the ships, which was Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust out a little from the land. And he sat down, and taught the people out of the ship. 5:4. Now when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Launch out into the deep, and let down your nets for a draught. 5:5. And Simon answering said unto him, Master, we have toiled all the night, and have taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I will let down the net. 5:6. And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes: and their net brake. 5:7. And they beckoned unto their partners, which were in the other ship, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the ships, so that they began to sink. 5:8. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O Lord. 5:9. For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes which they had taken: 5:10. And so was also James, and John, the sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt catch men. 5:11. And when they had brought their ships to land, they forsook all, and followed him. 5:12. And it came to pass, when he was in a certain city, behold a man full of leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. 5:13. And he put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will: be thou clean. And immediately the leprosy departed from him. 5:14. And he charged him to tell no man: but go, and shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them. 5:15. But so much the more went there a fame abroad of him: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities. 5:16. And he withdrew himself into the wilderness, and prayed. 5:17. And it came to pass on a certain day, as he was teaching, that there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every town of Galilee, and Judaea, and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was present to heal them. 5:18. And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him. 5:19. And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus. 5:20. And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. 5:21. And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? 5:22. But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts? 5:23. Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk? 5:24. But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house. 5:25. And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God. 5:26. And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day. 5:27. And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me. 5:28. And he left all, rose up, and followed him. 5:29. And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them. 5:30. But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners? 5:31. And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. 5:32. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance. 5:33. And they said unto him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink? 5:34. And he said unto them, Can ye make the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? 5:35. But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days. 5:36. And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old. 5:37. And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish. 5:38. But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved. 5:39. No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better. 6:1. And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands. 6:2. And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days? 6:3. And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was an hungred, and they which were with him; 6:4. How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the shewbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone? 6:5. And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath. 6:6. And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man whose right hand was withered. 6:7. And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him. 6:8. But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth. 6:9. Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it? 6:10. And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other. 6:11. And they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus. 6:12. And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God. 6:13. And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles; 6:14. Simon, (whom he also named Peter,) and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew, 6:15. Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zelotes, 6:16. And Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, which also was the traitor. 6:17. And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases; 6:18. And they that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed. 6:19. And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all. 6:20. And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God. 6:21. Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh. 6:22. Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake. 6:23. Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets. 6:24. But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation. 6:25. Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep. 6:26. Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets. 6:27. But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, 6:28. Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you. 6:29. And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also. 6:30. Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again. 6:31. And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise. 6:32. For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them. 6:33. And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same. 6:34. And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again. 6:35. But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. 6:36. Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful. 6:37. Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven: 6:38. Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again. 6:39. And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch? 6:40. The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master. ^{that: or, shall be perfected as his master} 6:41. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye? 6:42. Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye. 6:43. For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 6:44. For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes. ^{grapes: Gr. a grape} 6:45. A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh. 6:46. And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say? 6:47. Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: 6:48. He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. 6:49. But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great. 7:1. Now when he had ended all his sayings in the audience of the people, he entered into Capernaum. 7:2. And a certain centurion's servant, who was dear unto him, was sick, and ready to die. 7:3. And when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and heal his servant. 7:4. And when they came to Jesus, they besought him instantly, saying, That he was worthy for whom he should do this: 7:5. For he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue. 7:6. Then Jesus went with them. And when he was now not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to him, saying unto him, Lord, trouble not thyself: for I am not worthy that thou shouldest enter under my roof: 7:7. Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto thee: but say in a word, and my servant shall be healed. 7:8. For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. ^{one: Gr. this man} 7:9. When Jesus heard these things, he marvelled at him, and turned him about, and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. 7:10. And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick. 7:11. And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people. 7:12. Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her. 7:13. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not. 7:14. And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise. ^{bier: or, coffin} 7:15. And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother. 7:16. And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people. 7:17. And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judaea, and throughout all the region round about. 7:18. And the disciples of John shewed him of all these things. 7:19. And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another? 7:20. When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another? 7:21. And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight. 7:22. Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached. 7:23. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me. 7:24. And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind? 7:25. But what went ye out for to see? A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts. 7:26. But what went ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say unto you, and much more than a prophet. 7:27. This is he, of whom it is written, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. 7:28. For I say unto you, Among those that are born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist: but he that is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he. 7:29. And all the people that heard him, and the publicans, justified God, being baptized with the baptism of John. 7:30. But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God against themselves, being not baptized of him. ^{rejected: or, frustrated against: or, within themselves} 7:31. And the Lord said, Whereunto then shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like? 7:32. They are like unto children sitting in the marketplace, and calling one to another, and saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned to you, and ye have not wept. 7:33. For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine; and ye say, He hath a devil. 7:34. The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners! 7:35. But wisdom is justified of all her children. 7:36. And one of the Pharisees desired him that he would eat with him. And he went into the Pharisee's house, and sat down to meat. 7:37. And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment, 7:38. And stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment. 7:39. Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is that toucheth him: for she is a sinner. 7:40. And Jesus answering said unto him, Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And he saith, Master, say on. 7:41. There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty. 7:42. And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most? 7:43. Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged. 7:44. And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head. 7:45. Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet. 7:46. My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment. 7:47. Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little. 7:48. And he said unto her, Thy sins are forgiven. 7:49. And they that sat at meat with him began to say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also? 7:50. And he said to the woman, Thy faith hath saved thee; go in peace. 8:1. And it came to pass afterward, that he went throughout every city and village, preaching and shewing the glad tidings of the kingdom of God: and the twelve were with him, 8:2. And certain women, which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils, 8:3. And Joanna the wife of Chuza Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance. 8:4. And when much people were gathered together, and were come to him out of every city, he spake by a parable: 8:5. A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. 8:6. And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture. 8:7. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it. 8:8. And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. 8:9. And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be? 8:10. And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand. 8:11. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 8:12. Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. 8:13. They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. 8:14. And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection. 8:15. But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience. 8:16. No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth it under a bed; but setteth it on a candlestick, that they which enter in may see the light. 8:17. For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither any thing hid, that shall not be known and come abroad. 8:18. Take heed therefore how ye hear: for whosoever hath, to him shall be given; and whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have. ^{seemeth: or, thinketh that he hath} 8:19. Then came to him his mother and his brethren, and could not come at him for the press. 8:20. And it was told him by certain which said, Thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to see thee. 8:21. And he answered and said unto them, My mother and my brethren are these which hear the word of God, and do it. 8:22. Now it came to pass on a certain day, that he went into a ship with his disciples: and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the lake. And they launched forth. 8:23. But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the lake; and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy. 8:24. And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water: and they ceased, and there was a calm. 8:25. And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And they being afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for he commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him. 8:26. And they arrived at the country of the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee. 8:27. And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs. 8:28. When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high? I beseech thee, torment me not. 8:29. (For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.) 8:30. And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him. 8:31. And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep. 8:32. And there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them. 8:33. Then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked. 8:34. When they that fed them saw what was done, they fled, and went and told it in the city and in the country. 8:35. Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid. 8:36. They also which saw it told them by what means he that was possessed of the devils was healed. 8:37. Then the whole multitude of the country of the Gadarenes round about besought him to depart from them; for they were taken with great fear: and he went up into the ship, and returned back again. 8:38. Now the man out of whom the devils were departed besought him that he might be with him: but Jesus sent him away, saying, 8:39. Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him. 8:40. And it came to pass, that, when Jesus was returned, the people gladly received him: for they were all waiting for him. 8:41. And, behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus' feet, and besought him that he would come into his house: 8:42. For he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying. But as he went the people thronged him. 8:43. And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physicians, neither could be healed of any, 8:44. Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched. 8:45. And Jesus said, Who touched me? When all denied, Peter and they that were with him said, Master, the multitude throng thee and press thee, and sayest thou, Who touched me? 8:46. And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me. 8:47. And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately. 8:48. And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace. 8:49. While he yet spake, there cometh one from the ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the Master. 8:50. But when Jesus heard it, he answered him, saying, Fear not: believe only, and she shall be made whole. 8:51. And when he came into the house, he suffered no man to go in, save Peter, and James, and John, and the father and the mother of the maiden. 8:52. And all wept, and bewailed her: but he said, Weep not; she is not dead, but sleepeth. 8:53. And they laughed him to scorn, knowing that she was dead. 8:54. And he put them all out, and took her by the hand, and called, saying, Maid, arise. 8:55. And her spirit came again, and she arose straightway: and he commanded to give her meat. 8:56. And her parents were astonished: but he charged them that they should tell no man what was done. 9:1. Then he called his twelve disciples together, and gave them power and authority over all devils, and to cure diseases. 9:2. And he sent them to preach the kingdom of God, and to heal the sick. 9:3. And he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece. 9:4. And whatsoever house ye enter into, there abide, and thence depart. 9:5. And whosoever will not receive you, when ye go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet for a testimony against them. 9:6. And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where. 9:7. Now Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was done by him: and he was perplexed, because that it was said of some, that John was risen from the dead; 9:8. And of some, that Elias had appeared; and of others, that one of the old prophets was risen again. 9:9. And Herod said, John have I beheaded: but who is this, of whom I hear such things? And he desired to see him. 9:10. And the apostles, when they were returned, told him all that they had done. And he took them, and went aside privately into a desert place belonging to the city called Bethsaida. 9:11. And the people, when they knew it, followed him: and he received them, and spake unto them of the kingdom of God, and healed them that had need of healing. 9:12. And when the day began to wear away, then came the twelve, and said unto him, Send the multitude away, that they may go into the towns and country round about, and lodge, and get victuals: for we are here in a desert place. 9:13. But he said unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they said, We have no more but five loaves and two fishes; except we should go and buy meat for all this people. 9:14. For they were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, Make them sit down by fifties in a company. 9:15. And they did so, and made them all sit down. 9:16. Then he took the five loaves and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and gave to the disciples to set before the multitude. 9:17. And they did eat, and were all filled: and there was taken up of fragments that remained to them twelve baskets. 9:18. And it came to pass, as he was alone praying, his disciples were with him: and he asked them, saying, Whom say the people that I am? 9:19. They answering said, John the Baptist; but some say, Elias; and others say, that one of the old prophets is risen again. 9:20. He said unto them, But whom say ye that I am? Peter answering said, The Christ of God. 9:21. And he straitly charged them, and commanded them to tell no man that thing; 9:22. Saying, The Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be slain, and be raised the third day. 9:23. And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. 9:24. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. 9:25. For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away? 9:26. For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father's, and of the holy angels. 9:27. But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God. 9:28. And it came to pass about an eight days after these sayings, he took Peter and John and James, and went up into a mountain to pray. ^{sayings: or, things} 9:29. And as he prayed, the fashion of his countenance was altered, and his raiment was white and glistering. 9:30. And, behold, there talked with him two men, which were Moses and Elias: 9:31. Who appeared in glory, and spake of his decease which he should accomplish at Jerusalem. 9:32. But Peter and they that were with him were heavy with sleep: and when they were awake, they saw his glory, and the two men that stood with him. 9:33. And it came to pass, as they departed from him, Peter said unto Jesus, Master, it is good for us to be here: and let us make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias: not knowing what he said. 9:34. While he thus spake, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them: and they feared as they entered into the cloud. 9:35. And there came a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my beloved Son: hear him. 9:36. And when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone. And they kept it close, and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen. 9:37. And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him. 9:38. And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son: for he is mine only child. 9:39. And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him. 9:40. And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not. 9:41. And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither. 9:42. And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father. 9:43. And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples, 9:44. Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men. 9:45. But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying. 9:46. Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest. 9:47. And Jesus, perceiving the thought of their heart, took a child, and set him by him, 9:48. And said unto them, Whosoever shall receive this child in my name receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me: for he that is least among you all, the same shall be great. 9:49. And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbad him, because he followeth not with us. 9:50. And Jesus said unto him, Forbid him not: for he that is not against us is for us.

9:51. And it came to pass, when the time was come that he should be received up, he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem, 9:52. And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him. (Luke 1:1-9:52, KJV)

Seeing that many did take in hand to set in order a narration of the matters that have been fully assured among us, 2. as they did deliver to us, who from the beginning became eye-witnesses, and officers of the Word, 3. it seemed good also to me, having followed from the first after all things exactly, to write to thee in order, most noble Theophilus, 4. that thou mayest know the certainty of the things wherein thou wast instructed. 5. There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest, by name Zacharias, of the course of Abijah, and his wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name Elisabeth; 6. and they were both righteous before God, going on in all the commands and righteousnesses of the Lord blameless, 7. and they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and both were advanced in their days. 8. And it came to pass, in his acting as priest, in the order of his course before God, 9. according to the custom of the priesthood, his lot was to make perfume, having gone into the sanctuary of the Lord, 10. and all the multitude of the people were praying without, at the hour of the perfume. 11. And there appeared to him a messenger of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of the perfume, 12. and Zacharias, having seen, was troubled, and fear fell on him; 13. and the messenger said unto him, 'Fear not, Zacharias, for thy supplication was heard, and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear a son to thee, and thou shalt call his name John, 14. and there shall be joy to thee, and gladness, and many at his birth shall joy, 15. for he shall be great before the Lord, and wine and strong drink he may not drink, and of the Holy Spirit he shall be full, even from his mother's womb; 16. and many of the sons of Israel he shall turn to the Lord their God, 17. and he shall go before Him, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn hearts of fathers unto children, and disobedient ones to the wisdom of righteous ones, to make ready for the Lord, a people prepared.' 18. And Zacharias said unto the messenger, 'Whereby shall I know this? for I am aged, and my wife is advanced in her days?' 19. And the messenger answering said to him, 'I am Gabriel, who have been standing near before God, and I was sent to speak unto thee, and to proclaim these good news to thee, 20. and lo, thou shalt be silent, and not able to speak, till the day that these things shall come to pass, because thou didst not believe my words, that shall be fulfilled in their season.' 21. And the people were waiting for Zacharias, and wondering at his tarrying in the sanctuary, 22. and having come out, he was not able to speak to them, and they perceived that a vision he had seen in the sanctuary, and he was beckoning to them, and did remain dumb. 23. And it came to pass, when the days of his service were fulfilled, he went away to his house, 24. and after those days, his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying 25. 'Thus hath the Lord done to me, in days in which He looked upon [me], to take away my reproach among men.' 26. And in the sixth month was the messenger Gabriel sent by God, to a city of Galilee, the name of which [is] Nazareth, 27. to a virgin, betrothed to a man, whose name [is] Joseph, of the house of David, and the name of the virgin [is] Mary. 28. And the messenger having come in unto her, said, 'Hail, favoured one, the Lord [is] with thee; blessed [art] thou among women;' 29. and she, having seen, was troubled at his word, and was reasoning of what kind this salutation may be. 30. And the messenger said to her, 'Fear not, Mary, for thou hast found favour with God; 31. and lo, thou shalt conceive in the womb, and shalt bring forth a son, and call his name Jesus; 32. he shall be great, and Son of the Highest he shall be called, and the Lord God shall give him the throne of David his father, 33. and he shall reign over the house of Jacob to the ages; and of his reign there shall be no end.' 34. And Mary said unto the messenger, 'How shall this be, seeing a husband I do not know?' 35. And the messenger answering said to her, 'The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee, therefore also the holy-begotten thing shall be called Son of God; 36. and lo, Elisabeth, thy kinswoman, she also hath conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month to her who was called barren; 37. because nothing shall be impossible with God.' 38. And Mary said, 'Lo, the maid-servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to thy saying,' and the messenger went away from her. 39. And Mary having arisen in those days, went to the hill-country, with haste, to a city of Judea, 40. and entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. 41. And it came to pass, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe did leap in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, 42. and spake out with a loud voice, and said, 'Blessed [art] thou among women, and blessed [is] the fruit of thy womb; 43. and whence [is] this to me, that the mother of my Lord might come unto me? 44. for, lo, when the voice of thy salutation came to my ears, leap in gladness did the babe in my womb; 45. and happy [is] she who did believe, for there shall be a completion to the things spoken to her from the Lord.' 46. And Mary said, 'My soul doth magnify the Lord, 47. And my spirit was glad on God my Saviour, 48. Because He looked on the lowliness of His maid-servant, For, lo, henceforth call me happy shall all the generations, 49. For He who is mighty did to me great things, And holy [is] His name, 50. And His kindness [is] to generations of generations, To those fearing Him, 51. He did powerfully with His arm, He scattered abroad the proud in the thought of their heart, 52. He brought down the mighty from thrones, And He exalted the lowly, 53. The hungry He did fill with good, And the rich He sent away empty, 54. He received again Israel His servant, To remember kindness, 55. As He spake unto our fathers, To Abraham and to his seed, to the age.' 56. And Mary remained with her about three months, and turned back to her house. 57. And to Elisabeth was the time fulfilled for her bringing forth, and she bare a son, 58. and the neighbours and her kindred heard that the Lord was making His kindness great with her, and they were rejoicing with her. 59. And it came to pass, on the eighth day, they came to circumcise the child, and they were calling him by the name of his father, Zacharias, 60. and his mother answering said, 'No, but he shall be called John.' 61. And they said unto her, 'There is none among thy kindred who is called by this name,' 62. and they were making signs to his father, what he would wish him to be called, 63. and having asked for a tablet, he wrote, saying, 'John is his name;' and they did all wonder; 64. and his mouth was opened presently, and his tongue, and he was speaking, praising God. 65. And fear came upon all those dwelling around them, and in all the hill-country of Judea were all these sayings spoken of, 66. and all who heard did lay them up in their hearts, saying, 'What then shall this child be?' and the hand of the Lord was with him. 67. And Zacharias his father was filled with the Holy Spirit, and did prophesy, saying, 68. 'Blessed [is] the Lord, the God of Israel, Because He did look upon, And wrought redemption for His people, 69. And did raise an horn of salvation to us, In the house of David His servant, 70. As He spake by the mouth of His holy prophets, Which have been from the age; 71. Salvation from our enemies, And out of the hand of all hating us, 72. To do kindness with our fathers, And to be mindful of His holy covenant, 73. An oath that He sware to Abraham our father, 74. To give to us, without fear, Out of the hand of our enemies having been delivered, 75. To serve Him, in holiness and righteousness Before Him, all the days of our life. 76. And thou, child, Prophet of the Highest Shalt thou be called; For thou shalt go before the face of the Lord, To prepare His ways. 77. To give knowledge of salvation to His people In remission of their sins, 78. Through the tender mercies of our God, In which the rising from on high did look upon us, 79. To give light to those sitting in darkness and death-shade, To guide our feet to a way of peace.' 80. And the child grew, and was strengthened in spirit, and he was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel. 2:1. And it came to pass in those days, there went forth a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world be enrolled 2:2. this enrolment first came to pass when Cyrenius was governor of Syria 2:3. and all were going to be enrolled, each to his proper city, 2:4. and Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, that is called Bethlehem, because of his being of the house and family of David, 2:5. to enrol himself with Mary his betrothed wife, being with child. 2:6. And it came to pass, in their being there, the days were fulfilled for her bringing forth, 2:7. and she brought forth her son, the first-born, and wrapped him up, and laid him down in the manger, because there was not for them a place in the guest-chamber. 2:8. And there were shepherds in the same region, lodging in the field, and keeping the night-watches over their flock, 2:9. and lo, a messenger of the Lord stood over them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they feared a great fear. 2:10. And the messenger said to them, 'Fear not, for lo, I bring you good news of great joy, that shall be to all the people 2:11. because there was born to you to-day a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord, in the city of David, 2:12. and this [is] to you the sign: Ye shall find a babe wrapped up, lying in the manger.' 2:13. And suddenly there came with the messenger a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, and saying, 2:14. 'Glory in the highest to God, and upon earth peace, among men, good will.' 2:15. And it came to pass, when the messengers were gone away from them to the heavens, that the men, the shepherds, said unto one another, 'We may go over indeed unto Bethlehem, and see this thing that hath come to pass, that the Lord did make known to us.' 2:16. And they came, having hasted, and found both Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in the manger, 2:17. and having seen, they made known abroad concerning the saying spoken to them concerning the child. 2:18. And all who heard, did wonder concerning the things spoken by the shepherds unto them; 2:19. and Mary was preserving all these things, pondering in her heart; 2:20. and the shepherds turned back, glorifying and praising God, for all those things they heard and saw, as it was spoken unto them. 2:21. And when eight days were fulfilled to circumcise the child, then was his name called Jesus, having been so called by the messenger before his being conceived in the womb. 2:22. And when the days of their purification were fulfilled, according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem, to present to the Lord, 2:23. as it hath been written in the Law of the Lord,, 'Every male opening a womb shall be called holy to the Lord,' 2:24. and to give a sacrifice, according to that said in the Law of the Lord, 'A pair of turtle-doves, or two young pigeons.' 2:25. And lo, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name [is] Simeon, and this man is righteous and devout, looking for the comforting of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him, 2:26. and it hath been divinely told him by the Holy Spirit, not to see death before he may see the Christ of the Lord. 2:27. And he came in the Spirit to the temple, and in the parents bringing in the child Jesus, for their doing according to the custom of the law regarding him, 2:28. then he took him in his arms, and blessed God, and he said, 2:29. 'Now Thou dost send away Thy servant, Lord, according to Thy word, in peace, 2:30. because mine eyes did see Thy salvation, 2:31. which Thou didst prepare before the face of all the peoples, 2:32. a light to the uncovering of nations, and the glory of Thy people Israel.' 2:33. And Joseph and his mother were wondering at the things spoken concerning him, 2:34. and Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, 'Lo, this [one] is set for the falling and rising again of many in Israel, and for a sign spoken against 2:35. (and also thine own soul shall a sword pass through), that the reasonings of many hearts may be revealed.' 2:36. And there was Anna, a prophetess, daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher, she was much advanced in days, having lived with an husband seven years from her virginity, 2:37. and she [is] a widow of about eighty-four years, who did depart not from the temple, with fasts and supplications serving, night and day, 2:38. and she, at that hour, having come in, was confessing, likewise, to the Lord, and was speaking concerning him, to all those looking for redemption in Jerusalem. 2:39. And when they finished all things, according to the Law of the Lord, they turned back to Galilee, to their city Nazareth; 2:40. and the child grew and was strengthened in spirit, being filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him. 2:41. And his parents were going yearly to Jerusalem, at the feast of the passover, 2:42. and when he became twelve years old, they having gone up to Jerusalem, according to the custom of the feast, 2:43. and having finished the days, in their returning the child Jesus remained behind in Jerusalem, and Joseph and his mother did not know, 2:44. and, having supposed him to be in the company, they went a day's journey, and were seeking him among the kindred and among the acquaintances, 2:45. and not having found him, they turned back to Jerusalem seeking him. 2:46. And it came to pass, after three days, they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both hearing them and questioning them, 2:47. and all those hearing him were astonished at his understanding and answers. 2:48. And, having seen him, they were amazed, and his mother said unto him, 'Child, why didst thou thus to us? lo, thy father and I, sorrowing, were seeking thee.' 2:49. And he said unto them, 'Why [is it] that ye were seeking me? did ye not know that in the things of my Father it behoveth me to be?' 2:50. and they did not understand the saying that he spake to them, 2:51. and he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and he was subject to them, and his mother was keeping all these sayings in her heart, 2:52. and Jesus was advancing in wisdom, and in stature, and in favour with God and men. 3:1. And in the fifteenth year of the government of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judea, and Herod tetrarch of Galilee, and Philip his brother, tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene 3:2. Annas and Caiaphas being chief priests, there came a word of God unto John the son of Zacharias, in the wilderness, 3:3. and he came to all the region round the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of reformation, to remission of sins, 3:4. as it hath been written in the scroll of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying, 'A voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, straight make ye His paths; 3:5. every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall become straightness, and the rough become smooth ways; 3:6. and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.' 3:7. Then said he to the multitudes coming forth to be baptised by him, 'Brood of vipers! who did prompt you to flee from the coming wrath? 3:8. make, therefore, fruits worthy of the reformation, and begin not to say within yourselves, We have a father, Abraham; for I say to you, that God is able out of these stones to raise children to Abraham; 3:9. and already also the axe unto the root of the trees is laid, every tree, therefore, not making good fruit is cut down, and to fire it is cast.' 3:10. And the multitudes were questioning him, saying, 'What, then, shall we do?' 3:11. and he answering saith to them, 'He having two coats, let him impart to him having none, and he having victuals, in like manner let him do.' 3:12. And there came also tax-gatherers to be baptised, and they said unto him, 'Teacher, what shall we do?' 3:13. and he said unto them, 'Exact no more than that directed you.' 3:14. And questioning him also were those warring, saying, 'And we, what shall we do?' and he said unto them, 'Do violence to no one, nor accuse falsely, and be content with your wages.' 3:15. And the people are looking forward, and all are reasoning in their hearts concerning John, whether or not he may be the Christ; 3:16. John answered, saying to all, 'I indeed with water do baptise you, but he cometh who is mightier than I, of whom I am not worthy to loose the latchet of his sandals, he shall baptise you with the Holy Spirit and with fire; 3:17. whose winnowing shovel [is] in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his floor, and will gather the wheat to his storehouse, and the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.' 3:18. And, therefore, indeed with many other things, exhorting, he was proclaiming good news to the people, 3:19. and Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him concerning Herodias the wife of Philip his brother, and concerning all the evils that Herod did, 3:20. added also this to all, that he shut up John in the prison. 3:21. And it came to pass, in all the people being baptised, Jesus also being baptised, and praying, the heaven was opened, 3:22. and the Holy Spirit came down in a bodily appearance, as if a dove, upon him, and a voice came out of heaven, saying, 'Thou art My Son, the Beloved, in thee I did delight.' 3:23. And Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, turned back from the Jordan, and was brought in the Spirit to the wilderness, 4:2. forty days being tempted by the Devil, and he did not eat anything in those days, and they having been ended, he afterward hungered, 4:3. and the Devil said to him, 'If Son thou art of God, speak to this stone that it may become bread.' 4:4. And Jesus answered him, saying, 'It hath been written, that, not on bread only shall man live, but on every saying of God.' 4:5. And the Devil having brought him up to an high mountain, shewed to him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, 4:6. and the Devil said to him, 'To thee I will give all this authority, and their glory, because to me it hath been delivered, and to whomsoever I will, I do give it; 4:7. thou, then, if thou mayest bow before me, all shall be thine.' 4:8. And Jesus answering him said, 'Get thee behind me, Adversary, for it hath been written, Thou shalt bow before the Lord thy God, and Him only thou shalt serve.' 4:9. And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, 'If the Son thou art of God, cast thyself down hence, 4:10. for it hath been written, To His messengers He will give charge concerning thee, to guard over thee, 4:11. and, On hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou mayest dash against a stone thy foot.' 4:12. And Jesus answering said to him, 'It hath been said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.' 4:13. And having ended all temptation, the Devil departed from him till a convenient season. 4:14. And Jesus turned back in the power of the Spirit to Galilee, and a fame went forth through all the region round about concerning him, 4:15. and he was teaching in their synagogues, being glorified by all. 4:16. And he came to Nazareth, where he hath been brought up, and he went in, according to his custom, on the sabbath-day, to the synagogue, and stood up to read; 4:17. and there was given over to him a roll of Isaiah the prophet, and having unfolded the roll, he found the place where it hath been written: 4:18. 'The Spirit of the Lord [is] upon me, Because He did anoint me; To proclaim good news to the poor, Sent me to heal the broken of heart, To proclaim to captives deliverance, And to blind receiving of sight, To send away the bruised with deliverance, 4:19. To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.' 4:20. And having folded the roll, having given [it] back to the officer, he sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue were gazing on him. 4:21. And he began to say unto them, 'To-day hath this writing been fulfilled in your ears;' 4:22. and all were bearing testimony to him, and were wondering at the gracious words that are coming forth out of his mouth, and they said, 'Is not this the son of Joseph?' 4:23. And he said unto them, 'Certainly ye will say to me this simile, Physician, heal thyself; as great things as we heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country;' 4:24. and he said, 'Verily I say to you, No prophet is accepted in his own country; 4:25. and of a truth I say to you, Many widows were in the days of Elijah, in Israel, when the heaven was shut for three years and six months, when great famine came on all the land, 4:26. and unto none of them was Elijah sent, but, to Sarepta of Sidon, unto a woman, a widow; 4:27. and many lepers were in the time of Elisha the prophet, in Israel, and none of them was cleansed, but, Naaman the Syrian.' 4:28. And all in the synagogue were filled with wrath, hearing these things, 4:29. and having risen, they put him forth without the city, and brought him unto the brow of the hill on which their city had been built, to cast him down headlong, 4:30. and he, having gone through the midst of them, went away. 4:31. And he came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and was teaching them on the sabbaths, 4:32. and they were astonished at his teaching, because his word was with authority. 4:33. And in the synagogue was a man, having a spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a great voice, 4:34. saying, 'Away, what, to us and to thee, Jesus, O Nazarene? thou didst come to destroy us; I have known thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.' 4:35. And Jesus did rebuke him, saying, 'Be silenced, and come forth out of him;' and the demon having cast him into the midst, came forth from him, having hurt him nought; 4:36. and amazement came upon all, and they were speaking together, with one another, saying, 'What [is] this word, that with authority and power he doth command the unclean spirits, and they come forth?' 4:37. and there was going forth a fame concerning him to every place of the region round about. 4:38. And having risen out of the synagogue, he entered into the house of Simon, and the mother-in-law of Simon was pressed with a great fever, and they did ask him about her, 4:39. and having stood over her, he rebuked the fever, and it left her, and presently, having risen, she was ministering to them. 4:40. And at the setting of the sun, all, as many as had any ailing with manifold sicknesses, brought them unto him, and he on each one of them [his] hands having put, did heal them. 4:41. And demons also were coming forth from many, crying out and saying, 'Thou art the Christ, the Son of God;' and rebuking, he did not suffer them to speak, because they knew him to be the Christ. 4:42. And day having come, having gone forth, he went on to a desert place, and the multitudes were seeking him, and they came unto him, and were staying him, not to go on from them, 4:43. and he said unto them, 'Also to the other cities it behoveth me to proclaim good news of the reign of God, because for this I have been sent;' 4:44. and he was preaching in the synagogues of Galilee. 5:1. And it came to pass, in the multitude pressing on him to hear the word of God, that he was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret, 5:2. and he saw two boats standing beside the lake, and the fishers, having gone away from them, were washing the nets, 5:3. and having entered into one of the boats, that was Simon's, he asked him to put back a little from the land, and having sat down, was teaching the multitudes out of the boat. 5:4. And when he left off speaking, he said unto Simon, 'Put back to the deep, and let down your nets for a draught;' 5:5. and Simon answering said to him, 'Master, through the whole night, having laboured, we have taken nothing, but at thy saying I will let down the net.' 5:6. And having done this, they enclosed a great multitude of fishes, and their net was breaking, 5:7. and they beckoned to the partners, who [are] in the other boat, having come, to help them; and they came, and filled both the boats, so that they were sinking. 5:8. And Simon Peter having seen, fell down at the knees of Jesus, saying, 'Depart from me, because I am a sinful man, O lord;' 5:9. for astonishment seized him, and all those with him, at the draught of the fishes that they took, 5:10. and in like manner also James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon; and Jesus said unto Simon, 'Fear not, henceforth thou shalt be catching men;' 5:11. and they, having brought the boats upon the land, having left all, did follow him. 5:12. And it came to pass, in his being in one of the cities, that lo, a man full of leprosy, and having seen Jesus, having fallen on [his] face, he besought him, saying, 'Sir, if thou mayest will, thou art able to cleanse me;' 5:13. and having stretched forth [his] hand, he touched him, having said, 'I will; be thou cleansed;' and immediately the leprosy went away from him. 5:14. And he charged him to tell no one, 'But, having gone away, shew thyself to the priest, and bring near for thy cleansing according as Moses directed, for a testimony to them;' 5:15. but the more was the report going abroad concerning him, and great multitudes were coming together to hear, and to be healed by him of their infirmities, 5:16. and he was withdrawing himself in the desert places and was praying. 5:17. And it came to pass, on one of the days, that he was teaching, and there were sitting by Pharisees and teachers of the Law, who were come out of every village of Galilee, and Judea, and Jerusalem, and the power of the Lord was, to heal them. 5:18. And lo, men bearing upon a couch a man, who hath been struck with palsy, and they were seeking to bring him in, and to place before him, 5:19. and not having found by what way they may bring him in because of the multitude, having gone up on the house-top, through the tiles they let him down, with the little couch, into the midst before Jesus, 5:20. and he having seen their faith, said to him, 'Man, thy sins have been forgiven thee.' 5:21. And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, 'Who is this that doth speak evil words? who is able to forgive sins, except God only?' 5:22. And Jesus having known their reasonings, answering, said unto them, 'What reason ye in your hearts? 5:23. which is easier, to say, Thy sins have been forgiven thee? or to say, Arise, and walk? 5:24. 'And that ye may know that the Son of Man hath authority upon the earth to forgive sins, (he said to the one struck with palsy), I say to thee, Arise, and having taken up thy little couch, be going on to thy house.' 5:25. And presently having risen before them, having taken up [that] on which he was lying, he went away to his house, glorifying God, 5:26. and astonishment took all, and they were glorifying God, and were filled with fear, saying, 'We saw strange things to-day.' 5:27. And after these things he went forth, and beheld a tax-gatherer, by name Levi, sitting at the tax-office, and said to him, 'Be following me;' 5:28. and he, having left all, having arisen, did follow him. 5:29. And Levi made a great entertainment to him in his house, and there was a great multitude of tax-gatherers and others who were with them reclining (at meat), 5:30. and the scribes and the Pharisees among them were murmuring at his disciples, saying, 'Wherefore with tax-gatherers and sinners do ye eat and drink?' 5:31. And Jesus answering said unto them, 'They who are well have no need of a physician, but they that are ill: 5:32. I came not to call righteous men, but sinners, to reformation.' 5:33. And they said unto him, 'Wherefore do the disciples of John fast often, and make supplications, in like manner also those of the Pharisees, but thine do eat and drink?' 5:34. And he said unto them, 'Are ye able to make the sons of the bride-chamber, in the bridegroom being with them, to fast? 5:35. but days will come, and, when the bridegroom may be taken away from them, then they shall fast in those days.' 5:36. And he spake also a simile unto them, 'No one a patch of new clothing doth put on old clothing, and if otherwise, the new also doth make a rent, and with the old the patch doth not agree, that [is] from the new. 5:37. 'And no one doth put new wine into old skins, and if otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins, and itself will be poured out, and the skins will be destroyed; 5:38. but new wine into new skins is to be put, and both are preserved together; 5:39. and no one having drunk old [wine], doth immediately wish new, for he saith, The old is better.' 6:1. And it came to pass, on the second-first sabbath, as he is going through the corn fields, that his disciples were plucking the ears, and were eating, rubbing with the hands, 6:2. and certain of the Pharisees said to them, 'Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbaths?' 6:3. And Jesus answering said unto them, 'Did ye not read even this that David did, when he hungered, himself and those who are with him, 6:4. how he went into the house of God, and the loaves of the presentation did take, and did eat, and gave also to those with him, which it is not lawful to eat, except only to the priests?' 6:5. and he said to them,, 'The Son of Man is lord also of the sabbath.' 6:6. And it came to pass also, on another sabbath, that he goeth into the synagogue, and teacheth, and there was there a man, and his right hand was withered, 6:7. and the scribes and the Pharisees were watching him, if on the sabbath he will heal, that they might find an accusation against him. 6:8. And he himself had known their reasonings, and said to the man having the withered hand, 'Rise, and stand in the midst;' and he having risen, stood. 6:9. Then said Jesus unto them, 'I will question you something: Is it lawful on the sabbaths to do good, or to do evil? life to save or to kill?' 6:10. And having looked round on them all, he said to the man, 'Stretch forth thy hand;' and he did so, and his hand was restored whole as the other; 6:11. and they were filled with madness, and were speaking with one another what they might do to Jesus. 6:12. And it came to pass in those days, he went forth to the mountain to pray, and was passing the night in the prayer of God, 6:13. and when it became day, he called near his disciples, and having chosen from them twelve, whom also he named apostles, 6:14. (Simon, whom also he named Peter, and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew, 6:15. Matthew and Thomas, James of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zelotes, 6:16. Judas of James, and Judas Iscariot, who also became betrayer;) 6:17. and having come down with them, he stood upon a level spot, and a crowd of his disciples, and a great multitude of the people from all Judea, and Jerusalem, and the maritime Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him, and to be healed of their sicknesses, 6:18. and those harassed by unclean spirits, and they were healed, 6:19. and all the multitude were seeking to touch him, because power from him was going forth, and he was healing all. 6:20. And he, having lifted up his eyes to his disciples, said: 'Happy the poor, because yours is the reign of God. 6:21. 'Happy those hungering now, because ye shall be filled. 'Happy those weeping now, because ye shall laugh. 6:22. 'Happy are ye when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you, and shall reproach, and shall cast forth your name as evil, for the Son of Man's sake 6:23. rejoice in that day, and leap, for lo, your reward [is] great in the heaven, for according to these things were their fathers doing to the prophets. 6:24. 'But woe to you, the rich, because ye have got your comfort. 6:25. 'Woe to you who have been filled, because ye shall hunger. 'Woe to you who are laughing now, because ye shall mourn and weep. 6:26. 'Woe to you when all men shall speak well of you, for according to these things were their fathers doing to false prophets. 6:27. 'But I say to you who are hearing, Love your enemies, do good to those hating you, 6:28. bless those cursing you, and pray for those accusing you falsely; 6:29. and to him smiting thee upon the cheek, give also the other, and from him taking away from thee the mantle, also the coat thou mayest not keep back. 6:30. 'And to every one who is asking of thee, be giving; and from him who is taking away thy goods, be not asking again; 6:31. and as ye wish that men may do to you, do ye also to them in like manner; 6:32. and, if ye love those loving you, what grace have ye? for also the sinful love those loving them; 6:33. and if ye do good to those doing good to you, what grace have ye? for also the sinful do the same; 6:34. and if ye lend [to those] of whom ye hope to receive back, what grace have ye? for also the sinful lend to sinners, that they may receive again as much. 6:35. 'But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again, and your reward will be great, and ye shall be sons of the Highest, because He is kind unto the ungracious and evil; 6:36. be ye therefore merciful, as also your Father is merciful. 6:37. 'And judge not, and ye may not be judged; condemn not, and ye may not be condemned; release, and ye shall be released. 6:38. 'Give, and it shall be given to you; good measure, pressed, and shaken, and running over, they shall give into your bosom; for with that measure with which ye measure, it shall be measured to you again.' 6:39. And he spake a simile to them, 'Is blind able to lead blind? shall they not both fall into a pit? 6:40. A disciple is not above his teacher, but every one perfected shall be as his teacher. 6:41. 'And why dost thou behold the mote that is in thy brother's eye, and the beam that [is] in thine own eye dost not consider? 6:42. or how art thou able to say to thy brother, Brother, suffer, I may take out the mote that [is] in thine eye, thyself the beam in thine own eye not beholding? Hypocrite, take first the beam out of thine own eye, and then thou shalt see clearly to take out the mote that [is] in thy brother's eye. 6:43. 'For there is not a good tree making bad fruit, nor a bad tree making good fruit; 6:44. for each tree from its own fruit is known, for not from thorns do they gather figs, nor from a bramble do they crop a grape. 6:45. 'The good man out of the good treasure of his heart doth bring forth that which [is] good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart doth bring forth that which [is] evil; for out of the abounding of the heart doth his mouth speak. 6:46. 'And why do ye call me, Lord, Lord, and do not what I say? 6:47. Every one who is coming unto me, and is hearing my words, and is doing them, I will shew you to whom he is like; 6:48. he is like to a man building a house, who did dig, and deepen, and laid a foundation upon the rock, and a flood having come, the stream broke forth on that house, and was not able to shake it, for it had been founded upon the rock. 6:49. 'And he who heard and did not, is like to a man having builded a house upon the earth, without a foundation, against which the stream brake forth, and immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house became great.' 7:1. And when he completed all his sayings in the ears of the people, he went into Capernaum; 7:2. and a certain centurion's servant being ill, was about to die, who was much valued by him, 7:3. and having heard about Jesus, he sent unto him elders of the Jews, beseeching him, that having come he might thoroughly save his servant. 7:4. And they, having come near unto Jesus, were calling upon him earnestly, saying, 'He is worthy to whom thou shalt do this, 7:5. for he doth love our nation, and the synagogue he did build to us.' 7:6. And Jesus was going on with them, and now when he is not far distant from the house the centurion sent unto him friends, saying to him, 'Sir, be not troubled, for I am not worthy that under my roof thou mayest enter; 7:7. wherefore not even myself thought I worthy to come unto thee, but say in a word, and my lad shall be healed; 7:8. for I also am a man placed under authority, having under myself soldiers, and I say to this [one], Go, and he goeth; and to another, Be coming, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doth [it].' 7:9. And having heard these things Jesus wondered at him, and having turned to the multitude following him, he said, 'I say to you, not even in Israel so much faith did I find;' 7:10. and those sent, having turned back to the house, found the ailing servant in health. 7:11. And it came to pass, on the morrow, he was going on to a city called Nain, and there were going with him many of his disciples, and a great multitude, 7:12. and as he came nigh to the gate of the city, then, lo, one dead was being carried forth, an only son of his mother, and she a widow, and a great multitude of the city was with her. 7:13. And the Lord having seen her, was moved with compassion towards her, and said to her, 'Be not weeping;' 7:14. and having come near, he touched the bier, and those bearing [it] stood still, and he said, 'Young man, to thee I say, Arise;' 7:15. and the dead sat up, and began to speak, and he gave him to his mother; 7:16. and fear took hold of all, and they were glorifying God, saying, 'A great prophet hath risen among us,' and, 'God did look upon His people.' 7:17. And the account of this went forth in all Judea about him, and in all the region around. 7:18. And the disciples of John told him about all these things, 7:19. and John having called near a certain two of his disciples, sent unto Jesus, saying, 'Art thou he who is coming, or for another do we look?' 7:20. And having come near to him, the men said, 'John the Baptist sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he who is coming, or for another do we look?' 7:21. And in that hour he cured many from sicknesses, and plagues, and evil spirits, and to many blind he granted sight. 7:22. And Jesus answering said to them, 'Having gone on, report to John what ye saw and heard, that blind men do see again, lame do walk, lepers are cleansed, deaf do hear, dead are raised, poor have good news proclaimed; 7:23. and happy is he whoever may not be stumbled in me.' 7:24. And the messengers of John having gone away, he began to say unto the multitudes concerning John: 'What have ye gone forth to the wilderness to look on? a reed by the wind shaken? 7:25. but what have ye gone forth to see? a man in soft garments clothed? lo, they in splendid apparellings, and living in luxury, are in the houses of kings! 7:26. 'But what have ye gone forth to see? a prophet? Yes, I say to you, and much more than a prophet: 7:27. this is he concerning whom it hath been written, Lo, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee; 7:28. for I say to you, a greater prophet, among those born of women, than John the Baptist there is not; but the least in the reign of God is greater than he.' 7:29. And all the people having heard, and the tax-gatherers, declared God righteous, having been baptized with the baptism of John, 7:30. but the Pharisees, and the lawyers, the counsel of God did put away for themselves, not having been baptized by him. 7:31. And the Lord said, 'To what, then, shall I liken the men of this generation? and to what are they like? 7:32. they are like to children, to those sitting in a market-place, and calling one to another, and saying, We piped to you, and ye did not dance, we mourned to you, and ye did not weep! 7:33. 'For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and ye say, He hath a demon; 7:34. the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and ye say, Lo, a man, a glutton, and a wine drinker, a friend of tax-gatherers and sinners; 7:35. and the wisdom was justified from all her children.' 7:36. And a certain one of the Pharisees was asking him that he might eat with him, and having gone into the house of the Pharisee he reclined (at meat), 7:37. and lo, a woman in the city, who was a sinner, having known that he reclineth (at meat) in the house of the Pharisee, having provided an alabaster box of ointment, 7:38. and having stood behind, beside his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with the tears, and with the hairs of her head she was wiping, and was kissing his feet, and was anointing with the ointment. 7:39. And the Pharisee who did call him, having seen, spake within himself, saying, 'This one, if he were a prophet, would have known who and of what kind [is] the woman who doth touch him, that she is a sinner.' 7:40. And Jesus answering said unto him, 'Simon, I have something to say to thee;' and he saith, 'Teacher, say on.' 7:41. 'Two debtors were to a certain creditor; the one was owing five hundred denaries, and the other fifty; 7:42. and they not having [wherewith] to give back, he forgave both; which then of them, say thou, will love him more?' 7:43. And Simon answering said, 'I suppose that to whom he forgave the more;' and he said to him, 'Rightly thou didst judge.' 7:44. And having turned unto the woman, he said to Simon, 'Seest thou this woman? I entered into thy house; water for my feet thou didst not give, but this woman with tears did wet my feet, and with the hairs of her head did wipe; 7:45. a kiss to me thou didst not give, but this woman, from what [time] I came in, did not cease kissing my feet; 7:46. with oil my head thou didst not anoint, but this woman with ointment did anoint my feet; 7:47. therefore I say to thee, her many sins have been forgiven, because she did love much; but to whom little is forgiven, little he doth love.' 7:48. And he said to her, 'Thy sins have been forgiven;' 7:49. and those reclining with him (at meat) began to say within themselves, 'Who is this, who also doth forgive sins?' 7:50. and he said unto the woman, 'Thy faith have saved thee, be going on to peace.' 8:1. And it came to pass thereafter, that he was going through every city and village, preaching and proclaiming good news of the reign of God, and the twelve [are] with him, 8:2. and certain women, who were healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary who is called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone forth, 8:3. and Joanna wife of Chuza, steward of Herod, and Susanna, and many others, who were ministering to him from their substance. 8:4. And a great multitude having gathered, and those who from city and city were coming unto him, he spake by a simile: 8:5. 'The sower went forth to sow his seed, and in his sowing some indeed fell beside the way, and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the heaven did devour it. 8:6. 'And other fell upon the rock, and having sprung up, it did wither, through not having moisture. 8:7. 'And other fell amidst the thorns, and the thorns having sprung up with it, did choke it. 8:8. 'And other fell upon the good ground, and having sprung up, it made fruit an hundred fold.' These things saying, he was calling, 'He having ears to hear, let him hear.' 8:9. And his disciples were questioning him, saying, 'What may this simile be?' 8:10. And he said, 'To you it hath been given to know the secrets of the reign of God, and to the rest in similes; that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand. 8:11. 'And this is the simile: The seed is the word of God, 8:12. and those beside the way are those hearing, then cometh the Devil, and taketh up the word from their heart, lest having believed, they may be saved. 8:13. 'And those upon the rock: They who, when they may hear, with joy do receive the word, and these have no root, who for a time believe, and in time of temptation fall away. 8:14. 'And that which fell to the thorns: These are they who have heard, and going forth, through anxieties, and riches, and pleasures of life, are choked, and bear not to completion. 8:15. 'And that in the good ground: These are they, who in an upright and good heart, having heard the word, do retain [it], and bear fruit in continuance. 8:16. 'And no one having lighted a lamp doth cover it with a vessel, or under a couch doth put [it]; but upon a lamp-stand he doth put [it], that those coming in may see the light, 8:17. for nothing is secret, that shall not become manifest, nor hid, that shall not be known, and become manifest. 8:18. 'See, therefore, how ye hear, for whoever may have, there shall be given to him, and whoever may not have, also what he seemeth to have, shall be taken from him.' 8:19. And there came unto him his mother and brethren, and they were not able to get to him because of the multitude, 8:20. and it was told him, saying, 'Thy mother and thy brethren do stand without, wishing to see thee;' 8:21. and he answering said unto them, 'My mother and my brethren! they are those who the word of God are hearing, and doing.' 8:22. And it came to pass, on one of the days, that he himself went into a boat with his disciples, and he said unto them, 'We may go over to the other side of the lake;' and they set forth, 8:23. and as they are sailing he fell deeply asleep, and there came down a storm of wind to the lake, and they were filling, and were in peril. 8:24. And having come near, they awoke him, saying, 'Master, master, we perish;' and he, having arisen, rebuked the wind and the raging of the water, and they ceased, and there came a calm, 8:25. and he said to them, 'Where is your faith?' and they being afraid did wonder, saying unto one another, 'Who, then, is this, that even the winds he doth command, and the water, and they obey him?' 8:26. And they sailed down to the region of the Gadarenes, that is over-against Galilee, 8:27. and he having gone forth upon the land, there met him a certain man, out of the city, who had demons for a long time, and with a garment was not clothed, and in a house was not abiding, but in the tombs, 8:28. and having seen Jesus, and having cried out, he fell before him, and with a loud voice, said, 'What, to me and to thee, Jesus, Son of God Most High? I beseech thee, mayest thou not afflict me!' 8:29. For he commanded the unclean spirit to come forth from the man, for many times it had caught him, and he was being bound with chains and fetters, guarded, and breaking asunder the bonds he was driven by the demons to the deserts. 8:30. And Jesus questioned him, saying, 'What is thy name?' and he said, 'Legion,' (because many demons were entered into him,) 8:31. and he was calling on him, that he may not command them to go away to the abyss, 8:32. and there was there a herd of many swine feeding in the mountain, and they were calling on him, that he might suffer them to enter into these, and he suffered them, 8:33. and the demons having gone forth from the man, did enter into the swine, and the herd rushed down the steep to the lake, and were choked. 8:34. And those feeding [them], having seen what was come to pass, fled, and having gone, told [it] to the city, and to the fields; 8:35. and they came forth to see what was come to pass, and they came unto Jesus, and found the man sitting, out of whom the demons had gone forth, clothed, and right-minded, at the feet of Jesus, and they were afraid; 8:36. and those also having seen [it], told them how the demoniac was saved. 8:37. And the whole multitude of the region of the Gadarenes round about asked him to go away from them, because with great fear they were pressed, and he having entered into the boat, did turn back. 8:38. And the man from whom the demons had gone forth was beseeching of him to be with him, and Jesus sent him away, saying, 8:39. 'Turn back to thy house, and tell how great things God did to thee;' and he went away through all the city proclaiming how great things Jesus did to him. 8:40. And it came to pass, in the turning back of Jesus, the multitude received him, for they were all looking for him, 8:41. and lo, there came a man, whose name [is] Jairus, and he was a chief of the synagogue, and having fallen at the feet of Jesus, was calling on him to come to his house; 8:42. because he had an only daughter about twelve years [old], and she was dying. And in his going away, the multitudes were thronging him, 8:43. and a woman, having an issue of blood for twelve years, who, having spent on physicians all her living, was not able to be healed by any, 8:44. having come near behind, touched the fringe of his garment, and presently the issue of her blood stood. 8:45. And Jesus said, 'Who [is] it that touched me?' and all denying, Peter and those with him said, 'Master, the multitudes press thee, and throng [thee], and thou dost say, Who [is] it that touched me!' 8:46. And Jesus said, 'Some one did touch me, for I knew power having gone forth from me.' 8:47. And the woman, having seen that she was not hid, trembling, came, and having fallen before him, for what cause she touched him declared to him before all the people, and how she was healed presently; 8:48. and he said to her, 'Take courage, daughter, thy faith hath saved thee, be going on to peace.' 8:49. While he is yet speaking, there doth come a certain one from the chief of the synagogue's [house], saying to him, 'Thy daughter hath died, harass not the Teacher;' 8:50. and Jesus having heard, answered him, saying, 'Be not afraid, only believe, and she shall be saved.' 8:51. And having come to the house, he suffered no one to go in, except Peter, and James, and John, and the father of the child, and the mother; 8:52. and they were all weeping, and beating themselves for her, and he said, 'Weep not, she did not die, but doth sleep; 8:53. and they were deriding him, knowing that she did die; 8:54. and he having put all forth without, and having taken hold of her hand, called, saying, 'Child, arise;' 8:55. and her spirit came back, and she arose presently, and he directed that there be given to her to eat; 8:56. and her parents were amazed, but he charged them to say to no one what was come to pass. 9:1. And having called together his twelve disciples, he gave them power and authority over all the demons, and to cure sicknesses, 9:2. and he sent them to proclaim the reign of God, and to heal the ailing. 9:3. And he said unto them, 'Take nothing for the way, neither staff, nor scrip, nor bread, nor money; neither have two coats each; 9:4. and into whatever house ye may enter, there remain, and thence depart; 9:5. and as many as may not receive you, going forth from that city, even the dust from your feet shake off, for a testimony against them.' 9:6. And going forth they were going through the several villages, proclaiming good news, and healing everywhere. 9:7. And Herod the tetrarch heard of all the things being done by him, and was perplexed, because it was said by certain, that John hath been raised out of the dead; 9:8. and by certain, that Elijah did appear, and by others, that a prophet, one of the ancients, was risen; 9:9. and Herod said, 'John I did behead, but who is this concerning whom I hear such things?' and he was seeking to see him. 9:10. And the apostles having turned back, declared to him how great things they did, and having taken them, he withdrew by himself to a desert place of a city called Bethsaida, 9:11. and the multitudes having known did follow him, and having received them, he was speaking to them concerning the reign of God, and those having need of service he cured. 9:12. And the day began to decline, and the twelve having come near, said to him, 'Let away the multitude, that having gone to the villages and the fields round about, they may lodge and may find provision, because here we are in a desert place.' 9:13. And he said unto them, 'Give ye them to eat;' and they said, 'We have no more than five loaves, and two fishes: except, having gone, we may buy for all this people victuals;' 9:14. for they were about five thousand men. And he said unto his disciples, 'Cause them to recline in companies, in each fifty;' 9:15. and they did so, and made all to recline; 9:16. and having taken the five loaves, and the two fishes, having looked up to the heaven, he blessed them, and brake, and was giving to the disciples to set before the multitude; 9:17. and they did eat, and were all filled, and there was taken up what was over to them of broken pieces, twelve baskets. 9:18. And it came to pass, as he is praying alone, the disciples were with him, and he questioned them, saying, 'Who do the multitudes say me to be?' 9:19. And they answering said, 'John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; and others, that a prophet, one of the ancients, was risen;' 9:20. and he said to them, 'And ye, who do ye say me to be?' and Peter answering said, 'The Christ of God.' 9:21. And having charged them, he commanded [them] to say this to no one, 9:22. saying, 'It behoveth the Son of Man to suffer many things, and to be rejected by the elders, and chief priests, and scribes, and to be killed, and the third day to be raised.' 9:23. And he said unto all, 'If any one doth will to come after me, let him disown himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me; 9:24. for whoever may will to save his life, shall lose it, and whoever may lose his life for my sake, he shall save it; 9:25. for what is a man profited, having gained the whole world, and having lost or having forfeited himself? 9:26. 'For whoever may be ashamed of me, and of my words, of this one shall the Son of Man be ashamed, when he may come in his glory, and the Father's, and the holy messengers'; 9:27. and I say to you, truly, there are certain of those here standing, who shall not taste of death till they may see the reign of God.' 9:28. And it came to pass, after these words, as it were eight days, that having taken Peter, and John, and James, he went up to the mountain to pray, 9:29. and it came to pass, in his praying, the appearance of his face became altered, and his garment white, sparkling. 9:30. And lo, two men were speaking together with him, who were Moses and Elijah, 9:31. who having appeared in glory, spake of his outgoing that he was about to fulfil in Jerusalem, 9:32. but Peter and those with him were heavy with sleep, and having waked, they saw his glory, and the two men standing with him. 9:33. And it came to pass, in their parting from him, Peter said unto Jesus, 'Master, it is good to us to be here; and we may make three booths, one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah,' not knowing what he saith: 9:34. and as he was speaking these things, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them, and they feared in their entering into the cloud, 9:35. and a voice came out of the cloud saying, 'This is My Son, the Beloved; hear ye him;' 9:36. and when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone; and they were silent, and declared to no one in those days anything of what they have seen. 9:37. And it came to pass on the next day, they having come down from the mount, there met him a great multitude, 9:38. and lo, a man from the multitude cried out, saying, 'Teacher, I beseech thee, look upon my son, because he is my only begotten; 9:39. and lo, a spirit doth take him, and suddenly he doth cry out, and it teareth him, with foaming, and it hardly departeth from him, bruising him, 9:40. and I besought thy disciples that they might cast it out, and they were not able.' 9:41. And Jesus answering said, 'O generation, unstedfast and perverse, till when shall I be with you, and suffer you? bring near hither thy son;' 9:42. and as he is yet coming near, the demon rent him, and tore [him] sore, and Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the youth, and gave him back to his father. 9:43. And they were all amazed at the greatness of God, and while all are wondering at all things that Jesus did, he said unto his disciples, 9:44. 'Lay ye to your ears these words, for the Son of Man is about to be delivered up to the hands of men.' 9:45. And they were not knowing this saying, and it was veiled from them, that they might not perceive it, and they were afraid to ask him about this saying. 9:46. And there entered a reasoning among them, this, Who may be greater of them? 9:47. and Jesus having seen the reasoning of their heart, having taken hold of a child, set him beside himself, 9:48. and said to them, 'Whoever may receive this child in my name, doth receive me, and whoever may receive me, doth receive Him who sent me, for he who is least among you all, he shall be great.' 9:49. And John answering said, 'Master, we saw a certain one in thy name casting forth the demons, and we forbade him, because he doth not follow with us;' 9:50. and Jesus said unto him, 'Forbid not, for he who is not against us, is for us.'

9:51. And it came to pass, in the completing of the days of his being taken up, that he fixed his face to go on to Jerusalem, 9:52. and he sent messengers before his face, and having gone on, they went into a village of Samaritans, to make ready for him, (Luke 1:1-9:52, YLT)
