Joseph of Cupertino was a poor Italian friar who, witnesses said, would float off the ground during prayer. Not occasionally. Around seventy documented times across thirty-three years, in front of bishops, cardinals, princes, even a sitting pope.
A claim like that should make a careful reader suspicious, and that is the right reaction. Most cases of alleged levitation do not stand up under examination. What makes Joseph's case unusual is the size and quality of the witness pool. When the Vatican opened his canonization process, they took sworn depositions in a formal legal-style inquiry. Pope Urban VIII personally watched him rise during an audience in 1645. A Lutheran prince (Frederick of Hesse-Darmstadt) saw it and converted afterward. Princess Maria di Savoia witnessed it. So did multiple cardinals, bishops, fellow friars, and townspeople, including some who came as skeptics.
The events were disruptive enough that the church had to move Joseph between five friaries to manage the crowds and had to make him say Mass alone for years. That is not the pattern of a fabricated piety story; that is the pattern of an event the church found inconvenient to handle.

The event
Giuseppe Maria Desa was born to a poor Apulian carpenter family in southeastern Italy. His childhood was difficult; he was educated minimally and developed a reputation for absent-mindedness and difficulty with concentration in formal study. He attempted entry to the Capuchin Franciscans but was dismissed within months due to his apparent inability to function in formal religious-community routine. He was eventually accepted by the Franciscan Conventuals (a different branch of the Franciscan order) and ordained priest in 1628.
Beginning around 1630 and continuing across the remaining ~33 years of his religious life, Joseph began experiencing what witnesses described as ecstatic states during prayer, Mass, hearing the names of Christ or Mary, or while contemplating sacred art / music / scripture.
