Theological reading

Joel 2:18 is the structural pivot of the book, the turn from indictment-and-call-to-repentance (chs. 1-2:17) to restoration-and-eschatological-blessing (2:18-3:21). The verb qinneʾ (Piel of [[H7065 - qana|qana]]) names YHWH's positive-protective zeal deployed on behalf of His people. This is the canonical OT verse for the restoration-direction deployment of qana: the same divine attribute that judges covenant-breaking also moves God to spare and restore the covenant people. The verse follows the priestly intercession of v. 17 ("spare thy people, O Jehovah"), the divine qana is the response to mediated covenant-pleading. The verse pairs qinneʾ with chamal ("had pity"), making explicit that biblical divine-jealousy is protective covenant-love that takes the covenant seriously enough to act on either side of the violation-line, judgment when the covenant is broken; pity when the people repent. The verse stands alongside Zech 1:14 and Zech 8:2 in the positive-restoration-zeal cluster that grounds the apologetic equivocation-defeater (see H7065 - qana §"Apologetic deployment"): the New Atheist polemic reads divine qana exclusively in the punitive register; the OT itself shows the same attribute as the source of God's restoring mercy.

Why these four translations

ris3n chose ASV, WEB, KJV, and YLT for two reasons together. They are the most literal English translations available (formal-equivalence: word-for-word renderings that preserve the Hebrew and Greek grammar rather than smoothing it into modern dynamic-equivalence idiom). And they are in the public domain in the United States, which means fair-use quotation at any length requires no publisher license. Modern licensed translations (NASB95, ESV, NIV) restrict volume of quotation under their copyright terms, so they are not used at stub-level coverage here. NASB95 appears only on hand-curated rich passage hubs under Lockman Foundation's fair-use allowance.
