Theological reading

Jer 31:31-34 is the single most theologically load-bearing OT prophecy of the New Covenant. The text names what the Mosaic covenant could not do, produce the lebab-obedience it demanded, and announces what the future covenant will do: YHWH Himself will write the law on the heart (lev). The OT trajectory from Deut 6:5 (the lebab demand) through Deut 10:16 (the call to circumcise the lebab) through Deut 30:6 (the eschatological promise that YHWH Himself will circumcise the lebab) culminates here in Jer 31:33: the law no longer external on stone tablets but internal on the lev.

The NT identifies this prophecy as fulfilled in Christ and the Spirit. The Last Supper words "this is my blood of the new covenant" (Mk 14:24 // Matt 26:28 // Luke 22:20) deliberately identify Christ's atoning death as the covenant-inauguration Jer 31 prophesied. Hebrews quotes Jer 31:31-34 in full twice (Heb 8:8-12; 10:16-17) as the structural backbone of its argument that the Mosaic priesthood and sacrificial system are superseded by Christ's once-for-all priesthood. Paul deploys the same prophecy: "ye are an epistle of Christ... written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in tables that are hearts of flesh" (2 Cor 3:3), and the broader 2 Cor 3 argument that the new-covenant Spirit-ministry surpasses the old-covenant letter-ministry. Romans 2:28-29 makes the same move on circumcision of the heart, the Jer 31 promise applied directly to Christian identity.

The verse is foundational for the Reformed doctrines of regeneration (the work of writing the law on the heart is monergistic, YHWH does it), sanctification (the law internalized produces conformity from within), and the priesthood of all believers (the universal "they shall all know me" in v. 34 collapses the old-covenant mediated-knowledge structure). It is also a primary text for the doctrine of the invisible church, the covenant community is constituted by inner-renewal, not by outer-membership.

Why these four translations

ris3n chose ASV, WEB, KJV, and YLT for two reasons together. They are the most literal English translations available (formal-equivalence: word-for-word renderings that preserve the Hebrew and Greek grammar rather than smoothing it into modern dynamic-equivalence idiom). And they are in the public domain in the United States, which means fair-use quotation at any length requires no publisher license. Modern licensed translations (NASB95, ESV, NIV) restrict volume of quotation under their copyright terms, so they are not used at stub-level coverage here. NASB95 appears only on hand-curated rich passage hubs under Lockman Foundation's fair-use allowance.
