Setting
- Speaker: YHWH, in first-person speech.
- Audience: Israel, chapter 42 is the first of Isaiah's "Servant Songs" (cf. 49:1-13; 50:4-11; 52:13-53:12). The address moves between the Servant (v. 1) and the people (v. 6 the Servant is appointed "as a covenant to the people").
- Location: Isaiah's Jerusalem ministry.
- Time period: late 8th c. BC for Isaiah ben-Amoz; some scholars assign chapters 40-55 to a "Deutero-Isaiah" of the exile period (c. 540 BC).
Theological reading
The verse compresses three of the most theologically loaded claims in the Hebrew Bible:
- "I am the LORD, that is My name." Ani YHWH hu shemi. The divine name is asserted as the name of the speaker, the same name disclosed at Exodus 3.14-15. The whole verse hangs on this self-identification.
- "I will not give My glory to another." u-kavodi le-acher lo eten. The exclusivity claim. YHWH's kavod (H3519 - kavod), His weighty, visible majesty, is His alone. To give it to another (an idol, a creature, a rival deity) would be a category violation. No one shares God's glory.
- "Nor My praise to graven images." u-tehilati la-pesilim. The anti-idolatry claim parallel to (2). Praise belongs to YHWH, not to carved-stone or carved-wood representations.
The Christological tension
The verse is theologically explosive when paired with NT Christology:
- Isaiah 42:8, God will not give His glory to another.
- John 17:5, Jesus prays: "glorify Me… with the glory which I had with You before the world was."
- John 17:22, Jesus says: "the glory which You have given Me I have given to them."
The apparent contradiction: God shares His glory with no one (Isaiah 42:8), yet Christ both had divine glory (pre-existently) and gives it to His followers. The Christological resolution:
- Christ is not "another" in the Isaiah 42:8 sense; He is the same divine being. The Father gives glory to the Son not as to a separate deity but to Himself in person. The Trinitarian framework preserves Isaiah 42:8's exclusivity while accommodating the Father-Son glory-relation.
- Believers participate in glory (John 17:22) only through union with Christ, not as an independent gift. The Father's glory remains His, but believers, in Christ, partake by participation, not by independent possession.
- Idols and creatures get nothing of God's glory, Isaiah 42:8's prohibition stands. Christ is not idol or creature.
The verse is therefore one of the strongest indirect Christological proofs: if Jesus is not fully divine, then John 17:5 is blasphemous (claiming glory God will not give). The fact that the NT consistently asserts Christ's pre-incarnate possession and sharing of divine glory means the NT Christology positions Jesus within the divine identity of YHWH, not as a separate recipient of glory.
This is the Bauckham-Hurtado "divine identity Christology" argument applied to the Isaiah 42:8 / John 17:5 / 22 cluster.
Apologetic significance
The verse anchors:
- Strict monotheism / anti-idolatry, God's exclusive prerogatives.
- Christ's deity argument, Jesus possesses what God will not give to another; therefore Jesus is not "another" but is YHWH (per the Trinitarian unfolding).
- Anti-Watchtower / Arian Christology, if Christ were a created being, He would be the prohibited "another" who cannot legitimately have God's glory. The Christological data force either Christ's full deity or NT incoherence; since the NT is internally coherent, Christ must be fully God.
- Jewish-Christian apologetic, Christian reading affirms Isaiah 42:8 strictly; Trinitarianism preserves exclusivity by locating Father-Son glory-sharing within the one divine being.
Patristic. Athanasius (Discourses Against the Arians III.4ff, c. AD 358) explicitly addresses Isaiah 42:8 in his Trinitarian argument: the Son receives glory not as creature but as the one divine being-with-the-Father. Cyril of Alexandria (On the Unity of Christ) develops the same line. The Eastern Orthodox tradition treats the verse as foundational for the doctrine that the Trinitarian Persons share one glory by virtue of one essence.
Reformed. Calvin (Isaiah commentary): "this passage cannot be reconciled with what John says of Christ unless we acknowledge Christ to be the eternal God." The Westminster Confession 8 cites this verse in connection with John 17:5 to ground Christ's full deity.
Modern conservative. Larry Hurtado (Lord Jesus Christ, 2003), Richard Bauckham (Jesus and the God of Israel, 2008), Carey Newman (Paul's Glory-Christology, 1992). The "divine identity" Christology depends critically on this kind of glory-language harmonization.
