Setting
- Speaker: YHWH
- Audience: the northern kingdom, with Judah brought into the promise
- Location: the northern kingdom; Jezreel named again, now as promise
- Time period: c. 750-722 BC, from the last years of Jeroboam II through the dynastic chaos that followed to the eve of Samaria's fall to Assyria
Theological reading
Verse 10 reverses the sentence of Lo-ammi by reaching back to the Abrahamic promise of innumerable descendants (Genesis 22:17), and does so in the very place where the denial was pronounced. Paul quotes it at Romans 9:26 and 1 Peter 2:10 applies it to the church.
Verse 11 adds what verse 10 alone does not: reunification. Judah and Israel are gathered together under "one head," which for a prophet working in the north is a substantial concession, since the northern kingdom existed because it had rejected the house of David (1 Kings 12). Ezekiel later develops the same hope at length (Ezekiel 37:15-24). The closing phrase, "great shall be the day of Jezreel," completes the inversion begun in verse 4: the name that meant a valley of blood now means the sowing its etymology always carried.

Why these four translations
ris3n chose ASV, WEB, KJV, and YLT for two reasons together. They are the most literal English translations available (formal-equivalence: word-for-word renderings that preserve the Hebrew and Greek grammar rather than smoothing it into modern dynamic-equivalence idiom). And they are in the public domain in the United States, which means fair-use quotation at any length requires no publisher license. Modern licensed translations (NASB95, ESV, NIV) restrict volume of quotation under their copyright terms, so they are not used at stub-level coverage here. NASB95 appears only on hand-curated rich passage hubs under Lockman Foundation's fair-use allowance.
The four:
- ASV (American Standard Version, 1901). The basis of the modern critical-text English tradition.
- WEB (World English Bible, contemporary). Public-domain revision in the ASV line, in current English.
- KJV (King James Version, 1611). Reformation-era, Textus Receptus base.
- YLT (Young's Literal Translation, Robert Young, 1862). Hyper-literal preservation of Hebrew and Greek grammar; useful for word-study work even where English reads stiff.
