Hebrews 2.14
Book: Hebrews · NASB95
Verse
Sponsored
"Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil." (Hebrews 2:14, NASB95)
Immediate context (±2 verses)
"For both He who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all from one Father; for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren, saying, 'I will proclaim Your name to My brethren, in the midst of the congregation I will sing Your praise.' And again, 'I will put My trust in Him.' And again, 'Behold, I and the children whom God has given Me.' Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives. For assuredly He does not give help to angels, but He gives help to the descendant of Abraham. Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people." (Hebrews 2:11-17, NASB95)
Setting
- Speaker: the unnamed author of Hebrews. Authorship is disputed across the patristic-medieval-modern reception-history: Paul (Eastern tradition + KJV-era assumption); Apollos (Luther's hypothesis); Barnabas (Tertullian De Pudicitia 20); Priscilla (Adolf Harnack 1900); Clement of Rome; Luke (Origen Hist. Eccl. 6.25.13, "Only God knows the truth"); Silas. Modern critical consensus: an unknown Pauline-circle author writing in elegant Greek with deep Jewish-temple-cult knowledge. The book is canonical regardless of authorship-uncertainty (received as Scripture from the 2nd century onward).
- Audience: Jewish-Christian community (likely in Rome or Jerusalem) facing pressure to revert to Judaism, possibly under Neronian persecution (mid-AD 60s) or Domitian-era pressures (AD 90s). The recipients are tempted by the appeal of returning to the visible-temple-cult; Hebrews argues that Christ's high-priesthood and once-for-all sacrifice render the OT-typological-cult obsolete.
- Location: uncertain, Rome (most-favored hypothesis given 13:24 "those from Italy greet you") or Jerusalem (less-likely given the Greek's literary elegance + Septuagint-citation pattern)
- Time period: before AD 70 (the destruction of the Second Temple), the book treats the temple-cult as actively-functioning throughout (8:4, 13; 9:9; 10:1-2); had the Temple already fallen, the argument would naturally invoke that as decisive. Likely date AD 60-69, mid-Nero-to-pre-Jewish-War.
- Function in the letter: Hebrews 2:5-18 is the suffering-Son-of-Man section establishing that the Incarnation's full humanity is necessary for the Son to serve as the high priest who represents humanity to God + the captain of salvation who defeats the devil. The chapter sits between the Christology-of-glory (ch. 1) and the high-priestly-Christology (chs. 5-10), bridging by showing why the Glorified Son had to first become fully human + sufferer + dying-one for salvation to work.
Narrative and theological reading
Hebrews 2:14 is the Christus-Victor articulation of the cross-event in the most-developed form found in the NT. The verse compresses four theological moves into a single Greek sentence:
- The Incarnation's necessity, the children share flesh-and-blood; Christ likewise partook of the same; therefore he must become genuinely-human
- The mechanism of defeat is death itself, dia tou thanatou (through death), the cross is the means
- The defeated party is the devil, ton to kratos echonta tou thanatou, tout' estin ton diabolon (the one having the power of death, that is, the devil)
- The result is katargēsē, render-powerless, nullify, reduce-to-ineffectiveness, not "kill" Satan (he continues to be active until Rev 20:10), but strip him of his decisive-juridical-power-over-humanity
The Incarnation logic (v. 14a)
"Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same"
Greek: Epei oun ta paidia kekoinōnēken haimatos kai sarkos, kai autos paraplēsiōs metesken tōn autōn.
Two verb-distinctions carry the load:
- The children kekoinōnēken (κεκοινώνηκεν, perfect active of koinōneō), "have shared." The perfect tense names the settled-state of humanity-as-flesh-and-blood; this is what humans are, settled-and-ongoing.
- Christ metesken (μετέσχεν, aorist active of metechō), "partook." The aorist names a punctual-decisive-historical-act, Christ took up the flesh-and-blood condition at a specific moment (the Incarnation, c. 4 BC) that the children were already living in.
The verb-pair carries the Chalcedonian Christology in compressed form: the Son is eternally divine (the children were not divine before he came; he chose to enter their condition) AND truly human via voluntary-incarnational-decision (the aorist of metechō names a deliberate-historical-act). The "paraplēsiōs" (παραπλησίως, "likewise, in like manner") preserves the identity-of-the-flesh-and-blood-condition without collapsing the Son into mere-creaturely-existence. He is like the children in flesh-and-blood; he is not identical to them in nature beyond that (he retains his divine identity throughout).
This sentence is among the most-explicit NT articulations of the Incarnation-of-the-eternal-Son-into-the-human-condition framework. The patristic tradition's "God became man so that man might become God" formula (Athanasius De Incarnatione 54) is grounded textually here: the autos paraplēsiōs metesken names God-becoming-man, and the children-receiving-the-help-of-the-firstborn-brother names the gospel-result.
The dia tou thanatou, death as mechanism (v. 14b)
"that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death"
Greek: Hina dia tou thanatou katargēsē ton to kratos echonta tou thanatou.
The hina-clause (purpose clause) names why the Incarnation happened. The mechanism by which Christ defeats the devil is death itself. This is the paradox at the heart of Christian atonement-theology: God defeats death by entering death, defeats the devil by dying at his hand. The framework is not "Christ uses divine power to overpower Satan from above", it is "Christ enters Satan's own weapon (death) and turns it against him from within."
Athanasius (De Incarnatione 25-27) articulates this most-clearly in the patristic tradition: the Word who is life itself enters death, and death cannot hold life within itself; death is destroyed by its own collision with life. The cross is the trap into which the devil walks: thinking he had captured the Son of God in his domain (death), the devil discovered that life-itself had entered death and broken death from inside.
Gregory of Nyssa (Great Catechism 22-24) adds the (later-controversial) "fish-hook" image: Christ's divinity is hidden in human-flesh-bait, the devil takes the bait (kills Christ in apparent-victory), and is caught on the divine-hook he didn't see. The image fell out of favor in the medieval West (judged as making God deceptive), but the underlying intuition, Christ's victory through-and-not-against-death, remained dominant in the Greek patristic tradition.
Katargēsē, render-powerless, not kill (v. 14b)
The verb is katargēsē (καταργήσῃ, aorist active subjunctive of katargeō), which means to render-inoperative / nullify / reduce-to-ineffectiveness / strip-of-power / abolish-functionally. It does not mean kill or destroy-out-of-existence. The framework:
- Christ at the cross did not eliminate Satan's existence, Satan continues to be active through the apostolic age (1 Pet 5:8; Eph 6:11; Acts 5:3) and the church-age (Rev 12:9-12; 20:7-10)
- Christ at the cross did strip Satan of his decisive-juridical-authority, his power-of-accusation against believers (Rev 12:10; Rom 8:33-34); his power-of-death-as-fear-controlling-mechanism (Heb 2:15); his rulership-of-this-world-fallen-domain (John 12:31; Col 2:15)
The verb katargeō appears 27× in the NT, almost always in this strip-of-power sense:
- 1 Cor 15:24, 26, katargēthē pasa archē kai pasa exousia... eschatos echthros katargeitai ho thanatos ("every rule and authority will be rendered powerless... the last enemy to be rendered powerless is death")
- 2 Tim 1:10, Christ katargēsantos men ton thanaton ("rendered powerless the death")
- 2 Thess 2:8, the lawless one whom the Lord anelei... kai katargēsei ("will slay and render powerless")
The framework is decisive-juridical-defeat + ongoing-but-bounded-resistance, not immediate-total-elimination. See Why Doesnt God Stop Satan Objection Defeater P3 + P5, Christ's defeat-of-Satan-at-the-cross + the already-but-not-yet eschatological framework.
Ton to kratos echonta tou thanatou, the one having the power of death (v. 14c)
The phrase identifies the defeated party as the one having the power of death. Two readings of kratos (κράτος, power, might, dominion):
-
Legal-juridical authority over death, Satan as the accuser (Rev 12:10) whose accusations bring death-as-judgment upon sinners; the cross strips him of this accusatory-power by satisfying the just sentence (the legal-substitution reading). This is the dominant Reformed-penal-substitution reading.
-
Functional power-over-death-as-instrument, Satan as the agent who wields death as his weapon against humanity (Gen 3:1-19 + Wisdom 2:24, "through the devil's envy death entered the world"); the cross strips him of this instrumental-power by Christ's enduring + breaking death. This is the dominant Christus-Victor reading.
Both readings are complementary, not competing, they describe the same Satan-defeat-event from different angles (juridical / functional). The patristic + Reformation + analytic-theology consensus reads them together. See Atonement Theory Spread for the four-position synthesis.
Connection to v. 15, deliverance from fear of death
"and might free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives"
The framework's pastoral-existential dimension: humanity's bondage to fear of death is what Satan exploited (Gen 3's "you shall not surely die" + "in the day you eat you shall die", death as the mechanism of fear-controlled-existence). Christ's defeat-of-the-devil therefore frees humans from death-fear-driven slavery (cf. Rom 8:15, "you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again"; 1 John 4:18, "perfect love casts out fear").
This is the Hebrews-distinctive application of Christus Victor: not just cosmic-cosmological defeat but existential-anthropological liberation. The cross does both: defeats Satan and sets humanity free from the fear-of-death-driven existence Satan had exploited.
The four-fold theological load
Hebrews 2:14 is load-bearing across four major theological domains:
1. Christology, Incarnational necessity
The verse establishes that the Incarnation was necessary, not optional, for human salvation. Christ had to become genuinely-human-with-flesh-and-blood to accomplish what was needed. Anselm's Cur Deus Homo (c. 1098) articulates this rigorously: only the God-man can accomplish redemption, only one who is fully God can bear infinite divine wrath; only one who is fully human can do so as humanity's representative. Hebrews 2:14 + Heb 2:17 (the had to be made like his brethren in all things) are the NT anchors for the Anselmian Cur-Deus-Homo logic.
2. Atonement, Christus Victor strand
The verse is the canonical NT articulation of the Christus Victor atonement-motif. Christ's death defeats Satan; this is the purpose (the hina-clause) of the Incarnation. The Christus Victor strand was dominant in patristic atonement-theology (Irenaeus Adv. Haer. 5; Athanasius De Incarnatione 25-27; Augustine De Trinitate 13.13-19) before being augmented (not replaced) by Anselm's satisfaction-theory + Reformed penal-substitution. The modern recovery via Gustaf Aulén Christus Victor (1931) restores this strand. See Atonement Theory Spread.
3. Soteriology, Deliverance from fear-of-death slavery
The verse's pastoral dimension (developed in v. 15) names fear of death as the mechanism of human bondage. The gospel's effect is freedom from death-fear-driven slavery. This is taken up in later Christian existential theology (Kierkegaard The Concept of Anxiety 1844; Tillich The Courage to Be 1952; Becker The Denial of Death 1973, though Becker is a non-Christian; his work is read by Christian theologians as a confirmation of the Hebrews 2:14-15 framework).
4. Theology proper, The Incarnation-cross-resurrection mechanism is unified
Hebrews 2:14 is one of the strongest NT articulations of the unity of the Incarnation-cross-resurrection event: the Incarnation exists for the cross (the hina-clause); the cross defeats the devil; the defeat frees humanity. The framework is structurally-unified, not three-separate-events-in-sequence. The Eastern Orthodox tradition particularly emphasizes this, the whole Christ-event is one redemptive act (Maximus the Confessor; Vladimir Lossky Mystical Theology of the Eastern Church 1944).
Key words
- G2841 koinōneō (κοινωνέω), share, participate, hold in common; perfect tense in kekoinōnēken names the settled-state of humanity-as-flesh-and-blood
- G3348 metechō (μετέχω), partake, share, have a part in; aorist metesken names Christ's decisive-historical-act of taking up flesh-and-blood
- G4174 paraplēsiōs (παραπλησίως), likewise, in like manner; preserves identity-of-condition without collapsing identity-of-nature
- G2673 - katargeo (καταργέω), render powerless, nullify, reduce to ineffectiveness, strip of power; the load-bearing verb for the defeat-of-Satan mechanism; 27× in NT, almost always in this strip-of-power sense (cf. 1 Cor 15:24, 26; 2 Tim 1:10)
- G2904 kratos (κράτος), power, might, dominion, strength; here the kratos-of-death held by Satan

Patristic / medieval / Reformation / modern reception
The verse has been continuously-exegeted across the Christian tradition; the codex's mainstream reading reflects this consensus:
- Athanasius De Incarnatione 8-9, 25-27, the foundational patristic exposition; "He took our body so that He might put it on as His own, and as His own He might offer it to the Father in death, that He might bring our bodies to the Father"; the Word entering death + breaking death from within
- Gregory of Nyssa Great Catechism 22-24, the "fish-hook" image; Christ's divinity hidden in human-flesh, the devil takes the bait + is caught
- Augustine De Trinitate 13.13-19, the redemption-through-the-cross-as-defeat-of-the-devil; "by the death of one Son both [death and devil] were defeated"
- Anselm Cur Deus Homo (c. 1098), uses Heb 2:14 + 2:17 as the proof-texts for the necessity-of-the-God-man argument; the verse is load-bearing for the Anselmian logic
- Aquinas ST III q. 49 a. 2, Christ's passion freed us from the devil's bondage; cites Hebrews 2:14-15 as the textual anchor; the framework: the devil held humanity bound by a just title (the just sentence on sin); Christ pays that sentence and the just title is removed; the devil no longer has a just claim
- Luther Bondage of the Will + A Mighty Fortress is Our God hymn, explicit Christus Victor theology ("And He must win the battle"); the framework grounded in Heb 2:14
- Calvin Institutes 2.16.5-6, 11, Christus Victor preserved alongside penal-substitution; "He defeated death only by surrendering himself to its power"
- Westminster Larger Catechism Q.49, the humiliation of Christ included his death which "destroyed him that had the power of death", direct citation of Heb 2:14

Apologetic deployment
Hebrews 2:14 is load-bearing in five apologetic engagements:
-
The Christus Victor strand of atonement theology, answering atheist + Muslim + JW objections that "Christianity has multiple incompatible atonement theories"; the response: Christus Victor + recapitulation + satisfaction + penal-substitution are complementary facets of one cross-event, and Heb 2:14 is the canonical anchor for the Christus-Victor strand. See Atonement Theory Spread.
-
The Problem-of-Evil engagement with active demonic agency, the "why doesn't God just stop Satan?" objection (see Why Doesnt God Stop Satan Objection Defeater). Heb 2:14 is the load-bearing text showing God IS stopping Satan, through the cross, decisively-not-yet-completely, the already-but-not-yet framework that defeats the objection's "either total stop or no stop" trilemma.
-
The Anselmian Cur-Deus-Homo argument, the question "why did God have to become man to save us?" Heb 2:14 + 2:17 are the canonical textual anchors. The framework: only the God-man can accomplish the redemption (only fully-God can bear infinite-weight + only fully-human can substitute for humans).
-
The hypostatic-union + Chalcedonian framework, answering Docetist + Arian + Apollinarian + Nestorian + Monophysite + modern-process-theology rejections of full deity + full humanity in one person. Heb 2:14's autos paraplēsiōs metesken asserts genuine-humanity-of-the-Son without compromising divine-identity. See Hypostatic Union.
-
The pastoral-existential engagement with fear-of-death, v. 15's fear-of-death-driven-slavery framing is one of the NT's most-developed pastoral-engagements with the Becker / Tillich / Kierkegaard existential-anxiety framework. The framework: human-existence-under-Satan is bondage-to-fear-of-death; Christ's defeat-of-the-devil frees humanity into deathless-confidence (cf. Rom 8:38-39).
