Theological reading

Of the birds after their kind, and of the cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive. The phrase after their kind is the refrain of Genesis 1:11-25, and the three groups named here, birds, cattle and creeping things, are creation-week categories. The Flood instructions are written in the vocabulary of creation because the Flood is a preservation of creation through judgment.

The verb matters: the animals shall come unto thee. Noah is told to bring them in verse 19, and here they are said to come. Genesis 7:9 and 7:15 repeat that they went in unto Noah. The narrative does not picture Noah searching the earth for specimens; the gathering is God's work, and Noah's part is to receive them.

The Hebrew min, translated kind, is broader than the modern biological species, and the text does not define it in modern taxonomic terms. How broad it is remains debated among creationist biologists, as discussed on Noahs Ark Feasibility.

Why these four translations

ris3n chose ASV, WEB, KJV, and YLT for two reasons together. They are the most literal English translations available (formal-equivalence: word-for-word renderings that preserve the Hebrew and Greek grammar rather than smoothing it into modern dynamic-equivalence idiom). And they are in the public domain in the United States, which means fair-use quotation at any length requires no publisher license. Modern licensed translations (NASB95, ESV, NIV) restrict volume of quotation under their copyright terms, so they are not used at stub-level coverage here. NASB95 appears only on hand-curated rich passage hubs under Lockman Foundation's fair-use allowance.

The four:

  • ASV (American Standard Version, 1901). The basis of the modern critical-text English tradition.
  • WEB (World English Bible, contemporary). Public-domain revision in the ASV line, in current English.
  • KJV (King James Version, 1611). Reformation-era, Textus Receptus base.
  • YLT (Young's Literal Translation, Robert Young, 1862). Hyper-literal preservation of Hebrew and Greek grammar; useful for word-study work even where English reads stiff.
