Exodus 20.22-23.33

20. And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before you, that ye sin not. 21. And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.

22. And Jehovah said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye yourselves have seen that I have talked with you from heaven. 23. Ye shall not make other gods with me; gods of silver, or gods of gold, ye shall not make unto you. 24. An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt-offerings, and thy peace-offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in every place where I record my name I will come unto thee and I will bless thee. 25. And if thou make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stones; for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it. 26. Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not uncovered thereon. 21:1. Now these are the ordinances which thou shalt set before them. 21:2. If thou buy a Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing. 21:3. If he come in by himself, he shall go out by himself: if he be married, then his wife shall go out with him. 21:4. If his master give him a wife, and she bear him sons or daughters; the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out by himself. 21:5. But if the servant shall plainly say, I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free: 21:6. then his master shall bring him unto God, and shall bring him to the door, or unto the door-post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an awl; and he shall serve him for ever. 21:7. And if a man sell his daughter to be a maid-servant, she shall not go out as the men-servants do. 21:8. If she please not her master, who hath espoused her to himself, then shall he let her be redeemed: to sell her unto a foreign people he shall have no power, seeing he hath dealt deceitfully with her. 21:9. And if he espouse her unto his son, he shall deal with her after the manner of daughters. 21:10. If he take him another wife; her food, her raiment, and her duty of marriage, shall he not diminish. 21:11. And if he do not these three things unto her, then shall she go out for nothing, without money. 21:12. He that smiteth a man, so that he dieth, shall surely be put to death. 21:13. And if a man lie not in wait, but God deliver him into his hand; then I will appoint thee a place whither he shall flee. 21:14. And if a man come presumptuously upon his neighbor, to slay him with guile; thou shalt take him from mine altar, that he may die. 21:15. And he that smiteth his father, or his mother, shall be surely put to death. 21:16. And he that stealeth a man, and selleth him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death. 21:17. And he that curseth his father or his mother, shall surely be put to death. 21:18. And if men contend, and one smite the other with a stone, or with his fist, and he die not, but keep his bed; 21:19. if he rise again, and walk abroad upon his staff, then shall he that smote him be quit: only he shall pay for the loss of his time, and shall cause him to be thoroughly healed. 21:20. And if a man smite his servant, or his maid, with a rod, and he die under his hand; he shall surely be punished. 21:21. Notwithstanding, if he continue a day or two, he shall not be punished: for he is his money. 21:22. And if men strive together, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart, and yet no harm follow; he shall be surely fined, according as the woman's husband shall lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. 21:23. But if any harm follow, then thou shalt give life for life, 21:24. eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 21:25. burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe. 21:26. And if a man smite the eye of his servant, or the eye of his maid, and destroy it; he shall let him go free for his eye's sake. 21:27. And if he smite out his man-servant's tooth, or his maid-servant's tooth; he shall let him go free for his tooth's sake. 21:28. And if an ox gore a man or a woman to death, the ox shall be surely stoned, and its flesh shall not be eaten; but the owner of the ox shall be quit. 21:29. But if the ox was wont to gore in time past, and it hath been testified to its owner, and he hath not kept it in, but it hath killed a man or a woman; the ox shall be stoned, and its owner also shall be put to death. 21:30. If there be laid on him a ransom, then he shall give for the redemption of his life whatsoever is laid upon him. 21:31. Whether it have gored a son, or have gored a daughter, according to this judgment shall it be done unto him. 21:32. If the ox gore a man-servant or a maid-servant, there shall be given unto their master thirty shekels of silver, and the ox shall be stoned. 21:33. And if a man shall open a pit, or if a man shall dig a pit and not cover it, and an ox or an ass fall therein, 21:34. the owner of the pit shall make it good; he shall give money unto the owner thereof, and the dead beast shall be his. 21:35. And if one man's ox hurt another's, so that it dieth, then they shall sell the live ox, and divide the price of it; and the dead also they shall divide. 21:36. Or if it be known that the ox was wont to gore in time past, and its owner hath not kept it in; he shall surely pay ox for ox, and the dead beast shall be his own. 22:1. If a man shall steal an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, or sell it; he shall pay five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep. 22:2. If the thief be found breaking in, and be smitten so that he dieth, there shall be no bloodguiltiness for him. 22:3. If the sun be risen upon him, there shall be bloodguiltiness for him; he shall make restitution: if he have nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft. 22:4. If the theft be found in his hand alive, whether it be ox, or ass, or sheep; he shall pay double. 22:5. If a man shall cause a field or vineyard to be eaten, and shall let his beast loose, and it feed in another man's field; of the best of his own field, and of the best of his own vineyard, shall he make restitution. 22:6. If fire break out, and catch in thorns, so that the shocks of grain, or the standing grain, or the field are consumed; he that kindled the fire shall surely make restitution. 22:7. If a man shall deliver unto his neighbor money or stuff to keep, and it be stolen out of the man's house; if the thief be found, he shall pay double. 22:8. If the thief be not found, then the master of the house shall come near unto God, to see whether he have not put his hand unto his neighbor's goods. 22:9. For every matter of trespass, whether it be for ox, for ass, for sheep, for raiment, or for any manner of lost thing, whereof one saith, This is it, the cause of both parties shall come before God; he whom God shall condemn shall pay double unto his neighbor. 22:10. If a man deliver unto his neighbor an ass, or an ox, or a sheep, or any beast, to keep; and it die, or be hurt, or driven away, no man seeing it: 22:11. the oath of Jehovah shall be between them both, whether he hath not put his hand unto his neighbor's goods; and the owner thereof shall accept it, and he shall not make restitution. 22:12. But if it be stolen from him, he shall make restitution unto the owner thereof. 22:13. If it be torn in pieces, let him bring it for witness; he shall not make good that which was torn. 22:14. And if a man borrow aught of his neighbor, and it be hurt, or die, the owner thereof not being with it, he shall surely make restitution. 22:15. If the owner thereof be with it, he shall not make it good: if it be a hired thing, it came for its hire. 22:16. And if a man entice a virgin that is not betrothed, and lie with her, he shall surely pay a dowry for her to be his wife. 22:17. If her father utterly refuse to give her unto him, he shall pay money according to the dowry of virgins. 22:18. Thou shalt not suffer a sorceress to live. 22:19. Whosoever lieth with a beast shall surely be put to death. 22:20. He that sacrificeth unto any god, save unto Jehovah only, shall be utterly destroyed. 22:21. And a sojourner shalt thou not wrong, neither shalt thou oppress him: for ye were sojourners in the land of Egypt. 22:22. Ye shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child. 22:23. If thou afflict them at all, and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry; 22:24. and my wrath shall wax hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless. 22:25. If thou lend money to any of my people with thee that is poor, thou shalt not be to him as a creditor; neither shall ye lay upon him interest. 22:26. If thou at all take thy neighbor's garment to pledge, thou shalt restore it unto him before the sun goeth down: 22:27. for that is his only covering, it is his garment for his skin: wherein shall he sleep? and it shall come to pass, when he crieth unto me, that I will hear; for I am gracious. 22:28. Thou shalt not revile God, nor curse a ruler of thy people. 22:29. Thou shalt not delay to offer of thy harvest, and of the outflow of thy presses. The first-born of thy sons shalt thou give unto me. 22:30. Likewise shalt thou do with thine oxen, and with thy sheep: seven days it shall be with its dam; on the eighth day thou shalt give it me. 22:31. And ye shall be holy men unto me: therefore ye shall not eat any flesh that is torn of beasts in the field; ye shall cast it to the dogs. 23:1. Thou shalt not take up a false report: put not thy hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness. 23:2. Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt thou speak in a cause to turn aside after a multitude to wrest justice: 23:3. neither shalt thou favor a poor man in his cause. 23:4. If thou meet thine enemy's ox or his ass going astray, thou shalt surely bring it back to him again. 23:5. If thou see the ass of him that hateth thee lying under his burden, thou shalt forbear to leave him, thou shalt surely release it with him. 23:6. Thou shalt not wrest the justice due to thy poor in his cause. 23:7. Keep thee far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay thou not: for I will not justify the wicked. 23:8. And thou shalt take no bribe: for a bribe blindeth them that have sight, and perverteth the words of the righteous. 23:9. And a sojourner shalt thou not oppress: for ye know the heart of a sojourner, seeing ye were sojourners in the land of Egypt. 23:10. And six years thou shalt sow thy land, and shalt gather in the increase thereof: 23:11. but the seventh year thou shalt let it rest and lie fallow, that the poor of thy people may eat: and what they leave the beast of the field shall eat. In like manner thou shalt deal with thy vineyard, and with thy oliveyard. 23:12. Six days thou shalt do thy work, and on the seventh day thou shalt rest; that thine ox and thine ass may have rest, and the son of thy handmaid, and the sojourner, may be refreshed. 23:13. And in all things that I have said unto you take ye heed: and make no mention of the name of other gods, neither let it be heard out of thy mouth. 23:14. Three times thou shalt keep a feast unto me in the year. 23:15. The feast of unleavened bread shalt thou keep: seven days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, as I commanded thee, at the time appointed in the month Abib (for in it thou camest out from Egypt); and none shall appear before me empty: 23:16. and the feast of harvest, the first-fruits of thy labors, which thou sowest in the field: and the feast of ingathering, at the end of the year, when thou gatherest in thy labors out of the field. 23:17. Three times in the year all thy males shall appear before the Lord Jehovah. 23:18. Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leavened bread; neither shall the fat of my feast remain all night until the morning. 23:19. The first of the first-fruits of thy ground thou shalt bring into the house of Jehovah thy God. Thou shalt not boil a kid in it mother's milk. 23:20. Behold, I send an angel before thee, to keep thee by the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared. 23:21. Take ye heed before him, and hearken unto his voice; provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgression: for my name is in him. 23:22. But if thou shalt indeed hearken unto his voice, and do all that I speak; then I will be an enemy unto thine enemies, and an adversary unto thine adversaries. 23:23. For mine angel shall go before thee, and bring thee in unto the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Canaanite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite: and I will cut them off. 23:24. Thou shalt not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor do after their works; but thou shalt utterly overthrow them, and break in pieces their pillars. 23:25. And ye shall serve Jehovah your God, and he will bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee. 23:26. There shall none cast her young, nor be barren, in thy land: the number of thy days I will fulfil. 23:27. I will send my terror before thee, and will discomfit all the people to whom thou shalt come, and I will make all thine enemies turn their backs unto thee. 23:28. And I will send the hornet before thee, which shall drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite, from before thee. 23:29. I will not drive them out from before thee in one year, lest the land become desolate, and the beasts of the field multiply against thee. 23:30. By little and little I will drive them out from before thee, until thou be increased, and inherit the land. 23:31. And I will set thy border from the Red Sea even unto the sea of the Philistines, and from the wilderness unto the River: for I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand; and thou shalt drive them out before thee. 23:32. Thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor with their gods. 23:33. They shall not dwell in thy land, lest they make thee sin against me; for if thou serve their gods, it will surely be a snare unto thee. (Exodus 20:20-23:33, ASV)

20. Moses said to the people, “Don’t be afraid, for God has come to test you, and that his fear may be before you, that you won’t sin.” 21. The people stayed at a distance, and Moses came near to the thick darkness where God was.

22. Yahweh said to Moses, “This is what you shall tell the children of Israel: ‘You yourselves have seen that I have talked with you from heaven. 23. You shall most certainly not make alongside of me gods of silver, or gods of gold for yourselves. 24. You shall make an altar of earth for me, and shall sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings, your sheep and your cattle. In every place where I record my name I will come to you and I will bless you. 25. If you make me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of cut stones; for if you lift up your tool on it, you have polluted it. 26. You shall not go up by steps to my altar, that your nakedness may not be exposed to it.’ 21:1. “Now these are the ordinances which you shall set before them. 21:2. “If you buy a Hebrew servant, he shall serve six years and in the seventh he shall go out free without paying anything. 21:3. If he comes in by himself, he shall go out by himself. If he is married, then his wife shall go out with him. 21:4. If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be her master’s, and he shall go out by himself. 21:5. But if the servant shall plainly say, ‘I love my master, my wife, and my children. I will not go out free;’ 21:6. then his master shall bring him to God, and shall bring him to the door or to the doorpost, and his master shall bore his ear through with an awl, and he shall serve him for ever. 21:7. “If a man sells his daughter to be a female servant, she shall not go out as the male servants do. 21:8. If she doesn’t please her master, who has married her to himself, then he shall let her be redeemed. He shall have no right to sell her to a foreign people, since he has dealt deceitfully with her. 21:9. If he marries her to his son, he shall deal with her as a daughter. 21:10. If he takes another wife to himself, he shall not diminish her food, her clothing, and her marital rights. 21:11. If he doesn’t do these three things for her, she may go free without paying any money. 21:12. “One who strikes a man so that he dies shall surely be put to death, 21:13. but not if it is unintentional, but God allows it to happen: then I will appoint you a place where he shall flee. 21:14. If a man schemes and comes presumptuously on his neighbor to kill him, you shall take him from my altar, that he may die. 21:15. “Anyone who attacks his father or his mother shall be surely put to death. 21:16. “Anyone who kidnaps someone and sells him, or if he is found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death. 21:17. “Anyone who curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death. 21:18. “If men quarrel and one strikes the other with a stone, or with his fist, and he doesn’t die, but is confined to bed; 21:19. if he rises again and walks around with his staff, then he who struck him shall be cleared: only he shall pay for the loss of his time, and shall provide for his healing until he is thoroughly healed. 21:20. “If a man strikes his servant or his maid with a rod, and he dies under his hand, he shall surely be punished. 21:21. Notwithstanding, if he gets up after a day or two, he shall not be punished, for he is his property. 21:22. “If men fight and hurt a pregnant woman so that she gives birth prematurely, and yet no harm follows, he shall be surely fined as much as the woman’s husband demands and the judges allow. 21:23. But if any harm follows, then you must take life for life, 21:24. eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 21:25. burning for burning, wound for wound, and bruise for bruise. 21:26. “If a man strikes his servant’s eye, or his maid’s eye, and destroys it, he shall let him go free for his eye’s sake. 21:27. If he strikes out his male servant’s tooth, or his female servant’s tooth, he shall let him go free for his tooth’s sake. 21:28. “If a bull gores a man or a woman to death, the bull shall surely be stoned, and its meat shall not be eaten; but the owner of the bull shall not be held responsible. 21:29. But if the bull had a habit of goring in the past, and it has been testified to its owner, and he has not kept it in, but it has killed a man or a woman, the bull shall be stoned, and its owner shall also be put to death. 21:30. If a ransom is laid on him, then he shall give for the redemption of his life whatever is laid on him. 21:31. Whether it has gored a son or has gored a daughter, according to this judgment it shall be done to him. 21:32. If the bull gores a male servant or a female servant, thirty shekels of silver shall be given to their master, and the ox shall be stoned. 21:33. “If a man opens a pit, or if a man digs a pit and doesn’t cover it, and a bull or a donkey falls into it, 21:34. the owner of the pit shall make it good. He shall give money to its owner, and the dead animal shall be his. 21:35. “If one man’s bull injures another’s, so that it dies, then they shall sell the live bull, and divide its price; and they shall also divide the dead animal. 21:36. Or if it is known that the bull was in the habit of goring in the past, and its owner has not kept it in, he shall surely pay bull for bull, and the dead animal shall be his own. 22:1. “If a man steals an ox or a sheep, and kills it, or sells it; he shall pay five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep. 22:2. But if it is stolen from him, he shall make restitution to its owner. 22:13. If it is torn in pieces, let him bring it for evidence. He shall not make good that which was torn. 22:14. “If a man borrows anything of his neighbor’s, and it is injured, or dies, its owner not being with it, he shall surely make restitution. 22:15. If its owner is with it, he shall not make it good. If it is a leased thing, it came for its lease. 22:16. “If a man entices a virgin who isn’t pledged to be married, and lies with her, he shall surely pay a dowry for her to be his wife. 22:17. If her father utterly refuses to give her to him, he shall pay money according to the dowry of virgins. 22:18. “You shall not allow a sorceress to live. 22:19. “Whoever has sex with an animal shall surely be put to death. 22:20. “He who sacrifices to any god, except to Yahweh only, shall be utterly destroyed. 22:21. “You shall not wrong an alien or oppress him, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt. 22:22. “You shall not take advantage of any widow or fatherless child. 22:23. If you take advantage of them at all, and they cry at all to me, I will surely hear their cry; 22:24. and my wrath will grow hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless. 22:25. “If you lend money to any of my people with you who is poor, you shall not be to him as a creditor. You shall not charge him interest. 22:26. If you take your neighbor’s garment as collateral, you shall restore it to him before the sun goes down, 22:27. for that is his only covering, it is his garment for his skin. What would he sleep in? It will happen, when he cries to me, that I will hear, for I am gracious. 22:28. “You shall not blaspheme God, nor curse a ruler of your people. 22:29. “You shall not delay to offer from your harvest and from the outflow of your presses. “You shall give the firstborn of your sons to me. 22:30. You shall do likewise with your cattle and with your sheep. Seven days it shall be with its mother, then on the eighth day you shall give it to me. 22:31. “You shall be holy men to me, therefore you shall not eat any meat that is torn by animals in the field. You shall cast it to the dogs. 23:1. “You shall not spread a false report. Don’t join your hand with the wicked to be a malicious witness. 23:2. “You shall not follow a crowd to do evil. You shall not testify in court to side with a multitude to pervert justice. 23:3. You shall not favor a poor man in his cause. 23:4. “If you meet your enemy’s ox or his donkey going astray, you shall surely bring it back to him again. 23:5. If you see the donkey of him who hates you fallen down under his burden, don’t leave him, you shall surely help him with it. 23:6. “You shall not deny justice to your poor people in their lawsuits. 23:7. “Keep far from a false charge, and don’t kill the innocent and righteous: for I will not justify the wicked. 23:8. “You shall take no bribe, for a bribe blinds those who have sight and perverts the words of the righteous. 23:9. “You shall not oppress an alien, for you know the heart of an alien, since you were aliens in the land of Egypt. 23:10. “For six years you shall sow your land, and shall gather in its increase, 23:11. but the seventh year you shall let it rest and lie fallow, that the poor of your people may eat; and what they leave the animal of the field shall eat. In the same way, you shall deal with your vineyard and with your olive grove. 23:12. “Six days you shall do your work, and on the seventh day you shall rest, that your ox and your donkey may have rest, and the son of your servant, and the alien may be refreshed. 23:13. “Be careful to do all things that I have said to you; and don’t invoke the name of other gods or even let them be heard out of your mouth. 23:14. “You shall observe a feast to me three times a year. 23:15. You shall observe the feast of unleavened bread. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, as I commanded you, at the time appointed in the month Abib (for in it you came out of Egypt), and no one shall appear before me empty. 23:16. But if you indeed listen to his voice, and do all that I speak, then I will be an enemy to your enemies, and an adversary to your adversaries. 23:23. For my angel shall go before you, and bring you in to the Amorite, the Hittite, the Perizzite, the Canaanite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite; and I will cut them off. 23:24. You shall not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor follow their practices, but you shall utterly overthrow them and demolish their pillars. 23:25. You shall serve Yahweh your God, and he will bless your bread and your water, and I will take sickness away from among you. 23:26. No one will miscarry or be barren in your land. I will send the hornet before you, which will drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite, from before you. 23:29. And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast polluted it. ^{build: Heb. build them with hewing} 26. Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon. 21:1. Now these are the judgments which thou shalt set before them. 21:2. If thou buy an Hebrew servant, six years he shall serve: and in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing. 21:3. If he came in by himself, he shall go out by himself: if he were married, then his wife shall go out with him. ^{by himself: Heb. with his body} 21:4. If his master have given him a wife, and she have born him sons or daughters; the wife and her children shall be her master's, and he shall go out by himself. 21:5. And if the servant shall plainly say, I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free: ^{shall: Heb. saying shall say} 21:6. Then his master shall bring him unto the judges; he shall also bring him to the door, or unto the door post; and his master shall bore his ear through with an aul; and he shall serve him for ever. 21:7. And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do. 21:8. If she please not her master, who hath betrothed her to himself, then shall he let her be redeemed: to sell her unto a strange nation he shall have no power, seeing he hath dealt deceitfully with her. ^{please: Heb. be evil in the eyes of, etc} 21:9. And if he have betrothed her unto his son, he shall deal with her after the manner of daughters. 21:10. If he take him another wife; her food, her raiment, and her duty of marriage, shall he not diminish. 21:11. And if he do not these three unto her, then shall she go out free without money. 21:12. He that smiteth a man, so that he die, shall be surely put to death. 21:13. And if a man lie not in wait, but God deliver him into his hand; then I will appoint thee a place whither he shall flee. 21:14. But if a man come presumptuously upon his neighbour, to slay him with guile; thou shalt take him from mine altar, that he may die. 21:15. And he that smiteth his father, or his mother, shall be surely put to death. 21:16. And he that stealeth a man, and selleth him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death. 21:17. And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death. ^{curseth: or, revileth} 21:18. And if men strive together, and one smite another with a stone, or with his fist, and he die not, but keepeth his bed: ^{another: or, his neighbour} 21:19. If he rise again, and walk abroad upon his staff, then shall he that smote him be quit: only he shall pay for the loss of his time, and shall cause him to be thoroughly healed. ^{the loss: Heb. his ceasing} 21:20. And if a man smite his servant, or his maid, with a rod, and he die under his hand; he shall be surely punished. ^{punished: Heb. avenged} 21:21. Notwithstanding, if he continue a day or two, he shall not be punished: for he is his money. 21:22. If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. 21:23. And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life, 21:24. Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 21:25. Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe. 21:26. And if a man smite the eye of his servant, or the eye of his maid, that it perish; he shall let him go free for his eye's sake. 21:27. And if he smite out his manservant's tooth, or his maidservant's tooth; he shall let him go free for his tooth's sake. 21:28. If an ox gore a man or a woman, that they die: then the ox shall be surely stoned, and his flesh shall not be eaten; but the owner of the ox shall be quit. 21:29. But if the ox were wont to push with his horn in time past, and it hath been testified to his owner, and he hath not kept him in, but that he hath killed a man or a woman; the ox shall be stoned, and his owner also shall be put to death. 21:30. If there be laid on him a sum of money, then he shall give for the ransom of his life whatsoever is laid upon him. 21:31. Whether he have gored a son, or have gored a daughter, according to this judgment shall it be done unto him. 21:32. If the ox shall push a manservant or a maidservant; he shall give unto their master thirty shekels of silver, and the ox shall be stoned. 21:33. And if a man shall open a pit, or if a man shall dig a pit, and not cover it, and an ox or an ass fall therein; 21:34. The owner of the pit shall make it good, and give money unto the owner of them; and the dead beast shall be his. 21:35. And if one man's ox hurt another's, that he die; then they shall sell the live ox, and divide the money of it; and the dead ox also they shall divide. 21:36. Or if it be known that the ox hath used to push in time past, and his owner hath not kept him in; he shall surely pay ox for ox; and the dead shall be his own. 22:1. If a man shall steal an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, or sell it; he shall restore five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep. ^{or a sheep: or, or a goat} 22:2. If a thief be found breaking up, and be smitten that he die, there shall no blood be shed for him. 22:3. If the sun be risen upon him, there shall be blood shed for him; for he should make full restitution; if he have nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft. 22:4. If the theft be certainly found in his hand alive, whether it be ox, or ass, or sheep; he shall restore double. 22:5. If a man shall cause a field or vineyard to be eaten, and shall put in his beast, and shall feed in another man's field; of the best of his own field, and of the best of his own vineyard, shall he make restitution. 22:6. If fire break out, and catch in thorns, so that the stacks of corn, or the standing corn, or the field, be consumed therewith; he that kindled the fire shall surely make restitution. 22:7. If a man shall deliver unto his neighbour money or stuff to keep, and it be stolen out of the man's house; if the thief be found, let him pay double. 22:8. If the thief be not found, then the master of the house shall be brought unto the judges, to see whether he have put his hand unto his neighbour's goods. 22:9. For all manner of trespass, whether it be for ox, for ass, for sheep, for raiment, or for any manner of lost thing, which another challengeth to be his, the cause of both parties shall come before the judges; and whom the judges shall condemn, he shall pay double unto his neighbour. 22:10. If a man deliver unto his neighbour an ass, or an ox, or a sheep, or any beast, to keep; and it die, or be hurt, or driven away, no man seeing it: 22:11. Then shall an oath of the LORD be between them both, that he hath not put his hand unto his neighbour's goods; and the owner of it shall accept thereof, and he shall not make it good. 22:12. And if it be stolen from him, he shall make restitution unto the owner thereof. 22:13. If it be torn in pieces, then let him bring it for witness, and he shall not make good that which was torn. 22:14. And if a man borrow ought of his neighbour, and it be hurt, or die, the owner thereof being not with it, he shall surely make it good. 22:15. But if the owner thereof be with it, he shall not make it good: if it be an hired thing, it came for his hire. 22:16. And if a man entice a maid that is not betrothed, and lie with her, he shall surely endow her to be his wife. 22:17. If her father utterly refuse to give her unto him, he shall pay money according to the dowry of virgins. ^{pay: Heb. weigh} 22:18. Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live. 22:19. Whosoever lieth with a beast shall surely be put to death. 22:20. He that sacrificeth unto any god, save unto the LORD only, he shall be utterly destroyed. 22:21. Thou shalt neither vex a stranger, nor oppress him: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt. 22:22. Ye shall not afflict any widow, or fatherless child. 22:23. If thou afflict them in any wise, and they cry at all unto me, I will surely hear their cry; 22:24. And my wrath shall wax hot, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless. 22:25. If thou lend money to any of my people that is poor by thee, thou shalt not be to him as an usurer, neither shalt thou lay upon him usury. 22:26. If thou at all take thy neighbour's raiment to pledge, thou shalt deliver it unto him by that the sun goeth down: 22:27. For that is his covering only, it is his raiment for his skin: wherein shall he sleep? and it shall come to pass, when he crieth unto me, that I will hear; for I am gracious. 22:28. Thou shalt not raise a false report: put not thine hand with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness. ^{raise: or, receive} 23:2. Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt thou speak in a cause to decline after many to wrest judgment: ^{speak: Heb. answer} 23:3. Neither shalt thou countenance a poor man in his cause. 23:4. If thou meet thine enemy's ox or his ass going astray, thou shalt surely bring it back to him again. 23:5. If thou see the ass of him that hateth thee lying under his burden, and wouldest forbear to help him, thou shalt surely help with him. ^{and: or, wilt thou cease to help him? or, and wouldest cease to leave thy business for him: thou shalt surely leave it to join with him} 23:6. Thou shalt not wrest the judgment of thy poor in his cause. 23:7. Keep thee far from a false matter; and the innocent and righteous slay thou not: for I will not justify the wicked. 23:8. But the seventh year thou shalt let it rest and lie still; that the poor of thy people may eat: and what they leave the beasts of the field shall eat. Six days thou shalt do thy work, and on the seventh day thou shalt rest: that thine ox and thine ass may rest, and the son of thy handmaid, and the stranger, may be refreshed. 23:13. And in all things that I have said unto you be circumspect: and make no mention of the name of other gods, neither let it be heard out of thy mouth. 23:14. Three times thou shalt keep a feast unto me in the year. 23:15. Thou shalt keep the feast of unleavened bread: (thou shalt eat unleavened bread seven days, as I commanded thee, in the time appointed of the month Abib; for in it thou camest out from Egypt: and none shall appear before me empty:) 23:16. And the feast of harvest, the firstfruits of thy labours, which thou hast sown in the field: and the feast of ingathering, which is in the end of the year, when thou hast gathered in thy labours out of the field. 23:17. Three times in the year all thy males shall appear before the Lord GOD. 23:18. Thou shalt not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leavened bread; neither shall the fat of my sacrifice remain until the morning. ^{sacrifice: or, feast} 23:19. The first of the firstfruits of thy land thou shalt bring into the house of the LORD thy God. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in his mother's milk. 23:20. Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared. 23:21. Beware of him, and obey his voice, provoke him not; for he will not pardon your transgressions: for my name is in him. 23:22. But if thou shalt indeed obey his voice, and do all that I speak; then I will be an enemy unto thine enemies, and an adversary unto thine adversaries. ^{an adversary: or, I will afflict them that afflict thee} 23:23. For mine Angel shall go before thee, and bring thee in unto the Amorites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites: and I will cut them off. 23:24. Thou shalt not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor do after their works: but thou shalt utterly overthrow them, and quite break down their images. 23:25. And ye shall serve the LORD your God, and he shall bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee. 23:26. There shall nothing cast their young, nor be barren, in thy land: the number of thy days I will fulfil. 23:27. I will send my fear before thee, and will destroy all the people to whom thou shalt come, and I will make all thine enemies turn their backs unto thee. ^{backs: Heb. neck} 23:28. And I will send hornets before thee, which shall drive out the Hivite, the Canaanite, and the Hittite, from before thee. 23:29. I will not drive them out from before thee in one year; lest the land become desolate, and the beast of the field multiply against thee. 23:30. By little and little I will drive them out from before thee, until thou be increased, and inherit the land. 23:31. And I will set thy bounds from the Red sea even unto the sea of the Philistines, and from the desert unto the river: for I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand; and thou shalt drive them out before thee. 23:32. Thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor with their gods. 23:33. They shall not dwell in thy land, lest they make thee sin against me: for if thou serve their gods, it will surely be a snare unto thee. (Exodus 20:20-23:33, KJV)

20. And Moses saith unto the people, 'Fear not, for to try you hath God come, and in order that His fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.' 21. And the people stand afar off, and Moses hath drawn nigh unto the thick darkness where God [is].

And Jehovah saith unto Moses, 'Thus dost thou say unto the sons of Israel: Ye, ye have seen that from the heavens I have spoken with you; 23. ye do not make with Me gods of silver, even gods of gold ye do not make to yourselves. 24. 'An altar of earth thou dost make for Me, and thou hast sacrificed on it thy burnt-offerings and thy peace-offerings, thy flock and thy herd; in every place where I cause My name to be remembered I come in unto thee, and have blessed thee. 25. 'And if an altar of stones thou dost make to Me, thou dost not build them of hewn work; when thy tool thou hast waved over it, then thou dost pollute it; 26. neither dost thou go up by steps on Mine altar, that thy nakedness be not revealed upon it. 21:1. 'And if to his son he betroth her, according to the right of daughters he doth to her. 21:10. 'If another [woman] he take for him, her food, her covering, and her habitation, he doth not withdraw; 21:11. and if these three he do not to her, then she hath gone out for nought, without money. 21:12. 'He who smiteth a man so that he hath died, is certainly put to death; 21:13. as to him who hath not laid wait, and God hath brought to his hand, I have even set for thee a place whither he doth flee. 21:14. 'And when a man doth presume against his neighbour to slay him with subtilty, from Mine altar thou dost take him to die. 21:15. 'And he who smiteth his father or his mother is certainly put to death. 21:16. 'And he who stealeth a man, and hath sold him, and he hath been found in his hand, is certainly put to death. 21:17. 'And he who is reviling his father or his mother is certainly put to death. 21:18. 'And when men contend, and a man hath smitten his neighbour with a stone, or with the fist, and he die not, but hath fallen on the bed; 21:19. if he rise, and hath gone up and down without on his staff, then hath the smiter been acquitted; only his cessation he giveth, and he is thoroughly healed. 21:20. 'And when a man smiteth his man-servant or his handmaid, with a rod, and he hath died under his hand, he is certainly avenged; 21:21. only if he remain a day, or two days, he is not avenged, for he [is] his money. 21:22. 'And when men strive, and have smitten a pregnant woman, and her children have come out, and there is no mischief, he is certainly fined, as the husband of the woman doth lay upon him, and he hath given through the judges; 21:23. and if there is mischief, then thou hast given life for life, 21:24. eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 21:25. burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe. 21:26. 'And when an ox doth gore man or woman, and they have died, the ox is certainly stoned, and his flesh is not eaten, and the owner of the ox [is] acquitted; 21:29. and if the ox is [one] accustomed to gore heretofore, and it hath been testified to its owner, and he doth not watch it, and it hath put to death a man or woman, the ox is stoned, and its owner also is put to death. 21:30. 'If atonement is laid upon him, then he hath given the ransom of his life, according to all that is laid upon him; 21:31. whether it gore a son or gore a daughter, according to this judgment it is done to him. 21:32. 'If the ox gore a man-servant or a handmaid, thirty silver shekels he doth give to their lord, and the ox is stoned. 21:33. 'And when a man doth open a pit, or when a man doth dig a pit, and doth not cover it, and an ox or ass hath fallen thither, 21:34. the owner of the pit doth repay, money he doth give back to its owner, and the dead is his. 21:35. 'And when a man's ox doth smite the ox of his neighbour, and it hath died, then they have sold the living ox, and halved its money, and also the dead one they do halve; 21:36. or, it hath been known that the ox is [one] accustomed to gore heretofore, and its owner doth not watch it, he certainly repayeth ox for ox, and the dead is his. 22:1. 'When a man doth steal an ox or sheep, and hath slaughtered it or sold it, five of the herd he doth repay for the ox, and four of the flock for the sheep. 22:2. 'If in the breaking through, the thief is found, and he hath been smitten, and hath died, there is no blood for him; 22:3. if the sun hath risen upon him, blood [is] for him, he doth certainly repay; if he have nothing, then he hath been sold for his theft; 22:4. if the theft is certainly found in his hand alive, whether ox, or ass, or sheep, double he repayeth. 22:5. 'When a man depastureth a field or vineyard, and hath sent out his beast, and it hath pastured in the field of another, [of] the best of his field, and the best of his vineyard, he doth repay. 22:6. 'When fire goeth forth, and hath found thorns, and a stack, or the standing corn, or the field, hath been consumed, he who causeth the burning doth certainly repay. 22:7. 'When a man doth give unto his neighbour silver, or vessels to keep, and it hath been stolen out of the man's house; if the thief is found, he repayeth double. 22:8. 'If the thief is not found, then the master of the house hath been brought near unto God, whether he hath not put forth his hand against the work of his neighbour; 22:9. for every matter of transgression, for ox, for ass, for sheep, for raiment, for any lost thing of which it is said that it is his; unto God cometh the matter of them both; he whom God doth condemn, he repayeth double to his neighbour. 22:10. 'When a man doth give unto his neighbour an ass, or ox, or sheep, or any beast to keep, and it hath died, or hath been hurt, or taken captive, none seeing 22:11. an oath of Jehovah is between them both, that he hath not put forth his hand against the work of his neighbour, and its owner hath accepted, and he doth not repay; 22:12. but if it is certainly stolen from him, he doth repay to its owner; 22:13. if it is certainly torn, he bringeth it in, a witness; the torn thing he doth not repay. 22:14. 'And when a man doth ask [anything] from his neighbour, and it hath been hurt or hath died, its owner not being with it, he doth certainly repay; 22:15. if its owner [is] with it, he doth not repay,, if it [is] a hired thing, it hath come for its hire. 22:16. 'And when a man doth entice a virgin who [is] not betrothed, and hath lain with her, he doth certainly endow her to himself for a wife; 22:17. if her father utterly refuse to give her to him, money he doth weigh out according to the dowry of virgins. 22:18. 'If thou dost lend My poor people with thee money, thou art not to him as a usurer; thou dost not lay on him usury; 22:26. if thou dost at all take in pledge the garment of thy neighbour, during the going in of the sun thou dost return it to him: 22:27. for it alone is his covering, it [is] his garment for his skin; wherein doth he lie down? and it hath come to pass, when he doth cry unto Me, that I have heard, for I [am] gracious. 22:28. 'God thou dost not revile, and a prince among thy people thou dost not curse. 22:29. 'And a bribe thou dost not take; for the bribe bindeth the open -[eyed], and perverteth the words of the righteous. 23:9. 'And a sojourner thou dost not oppress, and ye, ye have known the soul of the sojourner, for sojourners ye have been in the land of Egypt. 23:10. 'And six years thou dost sow thy land, and hast gathered its increase; 23:11. and the seventh thou dost release it, and hast left it, and the needy of thy people have eaten, and their leaving doth the beast of the field eat; so dost thou to thy vineyard, to thine olive-yard. 23:12. 'Six days thou dost do thy work, and on the seventh day thou dost rest, so that thine ox and thine ass doth rest, and the son of thine handmaid and the sojourner is refreshed; 23:13. and in all that which I have said unto you ye do take heed; and the name of other gods ye do not mention; it is not heard on thy mouth. 23:14. 'Lo, I am sending a messenger before thee to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee in unto the place which I have prepared; 23:21. be watchful because of his presence, and hearken to his voice, rebel not against him, for he beareth not with your transgression, for My name [is] in his heart; 23:22. for, if thou diligently hearken to his voice, and hast done all that which I speak, then I have been at enmity with thine enemies, and have distressed those distressing thee. 23:23. 'For My messenger goeth before thee, and hath brought thee in unto the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Canaanite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, and I have cut them off. 23:24.
