Theological reading

The narrative is the textbook OT shama-response: Samuel's posture before YHWH is speak, for thy servant heareth. The Hebrew construction dabber ki shomea avdeka binds speaking to hearing as a single covenant-event; the prophet's vocation is summoned-by-listening. Eli, despite his own failures with his sons, supplies the right form-of-response, the discerned-call requires the listener-posture. The passage anchors the prophetic-vocation pattern (the prophet hears before the prophet speaks; cf. Isa 6:8; Jer 1:4-10; Ezek 2-3; Amos 3:7-8) and supplies the discipleship-model for any covenantal-hearing event. The verbal repetition of the call (Samuel, Samuel, paralleled at Gen 22:11 Abraham, Abraham; Ex 3:4 Moses, Moses; Acts 9:4 Saul, Saul) is the OT-NT double-vocative of divine calling.

Why these four translations

ris3n chose ASV, WEB, KJV, and YLT for two reasons together. They are the most literal English translations available (formal-equivalence: word-for-word renderings that preserve the Hebrew and Greek grammar rather than smoothing it into modern dynamic-equivalence idiom). And they are in the public domain in the United States, which means fair-use quotation at any length requires no publisher license. Modern licensed translations (NASB95, ESV, NIV) restrict volume of quotation under their copyright terms, so they are not used at stub-level coverage here. NASB95 appears only on hand-curated rich passage hubs under Lockman Foundation's fair-use allowance.
