Immediate context (±2 verses)
ASV
16. having a good conscience; that, wherein ye are spoken against, they may be put to shame who revile your good manner of life in Christ. 17. For it is better, if the will of God should so will, that ye suffer for well-doing than for evil-doing.
18. Because Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God; being put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; 19. in which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison, 20. that aforetime were disobedient, when the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water: 21. which also after a true likeness doth now save you, even baptism, not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the interrogation of a good conscience toward God, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ; 22. who is on the right hand of God, having gone into heaven; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him. 4:1. Forasmuch then as Christ suffered in the flesh, arm ye yourselves also with the same mind; for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; 4:2. that ye no longer should live the rest of your time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. 4:3. For the time past may suffice to have wrought the desire of the Gentiles, and to have walked in lasciviousness, lusts, winebibbings, revellings, carousings, and abominable idolatries: 4:4. wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them into the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you: 4:5. who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the living and the dead. 4:6. For unto this end was the gospel preached even to the dead, that they might be judged indeed according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
4:7. But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore of sound mind, and be sober unto prayer: 4:8. above all things being fervent in your love among yourselves; for love covereth a multitude of sins: (1 Peter 3:16-4:8, ASV)

16. having a good conscience; that, while you are spoken against as evildoers, they may be disappointed who curse your good way of life in Christ. 17. For it is better, if it is God’s will, that you suffer for doing well than for doing evil.
18. Because Christ also suffered for sins once, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring you to God; being put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; 19. in which he also went and preached to the spirits in prison, 20. who before were disobedient, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, while the ship was being built. In it, few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water. 21. This is a symbol of baptism, which now saves you, not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22. who is at the right hand of God, having gone into heaven, angels and authorities and powers being made subject to him. 4:1. Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind; for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin; 4:2. that you no longer should live the rest of your time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God. 4:3. For we have spent enough of our past time doing the desire of the Gentiles, and having walked in lewdness, lusts, drunken binges, orgies, carousings, and abominable idolatries. 4:4. They think it is strange that you don’t run with them into the same excess of riot, blaspheming: 4:5. who will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. 4:6. For to this end the Good News was preached even to the dead, that they might be judged indeed as men in the flesh, but live as to God in the spirit.
4:7. But the end of all things is near. Therefore be of sound mind, self-controlled, and sober in prayer. 4:8. And above all things be earnest in your love among yourselves, for love covers a multitude of sins. (1 Peter 3:16-4:8, WEB)
KJV
16. Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ. 17. For it is better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.
18. For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: 19. By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison; 20. Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. 21. The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: 22. Who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him. 4:1. Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; 4:2. That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. 4:3. For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: 4:4. Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you: 4:5. Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead. 4:6. For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.
4:7. But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer. 4:8. And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins. shall: or, will (1 Peter 3:16-4:8, KJV)
YLT
16. having a good conscience, that in that in which they speak against you as evil-doers, they may be ashamed who are traducing your good behaviour in Christ; 17. for [it is] better doing good, if the will of God will it, to suffer, than doing evil;
18. because also Christ once for sin did suffer, righteous for unrighteous, that he might lead us to God, having been put to death indeed, in the flesh, and having been made alive in the spirit, 19. in which also to the spirits in prison having gone he did preach, 20. who sometime disbelieved, when once the long-suffering of God did wait, in days of Noah, an ark being preparing, in which few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water; 21. also to which an antitype doth now save us, baptism, (not a putting away of the filth of flesh, but the question of a good conscience in regard to God,) through the rising again of Jesus Christ, 22. who is at the right hand of God, having gone on to heaven, messengers, and authorities, and powers, having been subjected to him. 4:1. Christ, then, having suffered for us in the flesh, ye also with the same mind arm yourselves, because he who did suffer in the flesh hath done with sin, 4:2. no more in the desires of men, but in the will of God, to live the rest of the time in the flesh; 4:3. for sufficient to us [is] the past time of life the will of the nations to have wrought, having walked in lasciviousnesses, desires, excesses of wines, revellings, drinking-bouts, and unlawful idolatries, 4:4. in which they think it strange, your not running with them to the same excess of dissoluteness, speaking evil, 4:5. who shall give an account to Him who is ready to judge living and dead, 4:6. for for this also to dead men was good news proclaimed, that they may be judged, indeed, according to men in the flesh, and may live according to God in the spirit.
4:7. And of all things the end hath come nigh; be sober-minded, then, and watch unto the prayers, 4:8. and, before all things, to one another having the earnest love, because the love shall cover a multitude of sins; (1 Peter 3:16-4:8, YLT)

Why these four translations
ris3n chose ASV, WEB, KJV, and YLT for two reasons together. They are the most literal English translations available (formal-equivalence: word-for-word renderings that preserve the Hebrew and Greek grammar rather than smoothing it into modern dynamic-equivalence idiom). And they are in the public domain in the United States, which means fair-use quotation at any length requires no publisher license. Modern licensed translations (NASB95, ESV, NIV) restrict volume of quotation under their copyright terms, so they are not used at stub-level coverage here. NASB95 appears only on hand-curated rich passage hubs under Lockman Foundation's fair-use allowance.
The four:
- ASV (American Standard Version, 1901). The basis of the modern critical-text English tradition.
- WEB (World English Bible, contemporary). Public-domain revision in the ASV line, in current English.
- KJV (King James Version, 1611). Reformation-era, Textus Receptus base.
- YLT (Young's Literal Translation, Robert Young, 1862). Hyper-literal preservation of Hebrew and Greek grammar; useful for word-study work even where English reads stiff.
See Bibles for the full per-translation history, translators, textual basis, strengths, and weaknesses.
