Setting
- Speaker: narrator (the Chronicler)
- Audience: the restored community in the Persian province of Yehud, rebuilding around temple and priesthood with no king of their own
- Location: Hebron and Jerusalem, then the exile and the return
- Time period: genealogical material reaching from Adam to the returnees, compiled after the return from Babylon, commonly placed c. 400 BC
Theological reading
The chapter gives David's sons born at Hebron and at Jerusalem, then the royal succession through the kings of Judah, then the line continuing past the captivity to Zerubbabel and beyond.
The structure is the argument. A dynasty is listed from its founding through its interruption to its survival, without the interruption being softened; Jeconiah is labelled "the captive" in the list itself. For readers with no king, the point is that the line God promised at 17:11-14 had not been erased by the exile, only deprived of a throne. The chapter is also the source for the observation that Solomon and Nathan were full brothers (verse 5), which is where the two New Testament genealogies part company._

Why these four translations
ris3n chose ASV, WEB, KJV, and YLT for two reasons together. They are the most literal English translations available (formal-equivalence: word-for-word renderings that preserve the Hebrew and Greek grammar rather than smoothing it into modern dynamic-equivalence idiom). And they are in the public domain in the United States, which means fair-use quotation at any length requires no publisher license. Modern licensed translations (NASB95, ESV, NIV) restrict volume of quotation under their copyright terms, so they are not used at stub-level coverage here. NASB95 appears only on hand-curated rich passage hubs under Lockman Foundation's fair-use allowance.
The four:
- ASV (American Standard Version, 1901). The basis of the modern critical-text English tradition.
- WEB (World English Bible, contemporary). Public-domain revision in the ASV line, in current English.
- KJV (King James Version, 1611). Reformation-era, Textus Receptus base.
- YLT (Young's Literal Translation, Robert Young, 1862). Hyper-literal preservation of Hebrew and Greek grammar; useful for word-study work even where English reads stiff.
