The God China Once Knew: Ancient Chinese History and the Biblical Narrative
This article presents a comprehensive apologetic argument that ancient Chinese worship of ShangDi reflects a preserved knowledge of Yahweh carried eastward after the Tower of Babel dispersion (Genesis 11:1–9).
It traces the alignment of Chinese dynastic chronologies with post‐Flood timelines; examines how Chinese character etymologies encode the Genesis accounts of creation (造), the Garden of Eden (園), the Fall (禁, 婪, 裸) and the Flood (船 “vessel + eight + persons”); and shows how the word for tower (塔) and confusion (亂) mirror Babel’s building materials and linguistic scattering. The study highlights ritual parallels between the Chinese Border Sacrifice and Old Testament worship (sacrifices, prayer, confession), and explores messianic hopes in Confucian, Mencian and Laozi texts anticipating a Sage-King from the West who fulfills Isaiah’s and New Testament prophecies. It then recounts the gradual decline from pure monotheism into polytheism, syncretism and modern atheism, before concluding that Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of the redemptive hope embedded in both Chinese tradition and biblical revelation.
By synthesizing historical records, linguistic “time-capsules” and classical philosophy, the paper demonstrates the historicity and universality of the Christian God and invites readers to recognize Christianity as the recovery of an ancient, global truth rather than a foreign import.
