# Spirit of Infirmity

## Intro

In [Luke 13](/codex/luke-13/), Jesus saw a woman who had been bent over for eighteen years. He did not say *poor lady, you must have arthritis.* He said *woman, you are loosed from your infirmity,* laid hands on her, and she straightened up. Then he explained to the synagogue ruler what had been going on: *this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound for eighteen years* ([Luke 13:16](/codex/luke-13-16/)).

Christian deliverance ministry takes that passage seriously. Most physical illness is just physical illness, and a doctor is the right answer. But sometimes, particularly with chronic conditions that resist all treatment, that drag on for years, that the person keeps describing in spiritual language (*I feel weighed down, I cannot break free*), there is a spiritual layer underneath that medicine alone cannot reach.

This page is part of a wider treatment of named spirits the deliverance tradition identifies (Hammond, Prince, MacNutt, Lozano, Anderson). The pages are written for ministry use, not curiosity. A spirit of infirmity often gets in through trauma, generational inheritance, occult contact, or word curses spoken over a person ("you are just like your mother, you will get sick"). It produces ongoing weakness, fatigue that does not lift, and conditions that resist standard treatment in ways the doctors find puzzling.

The page covers the standard pattern: how it attaches, how agreement forms, what the symptoms look like, the scriptural basis, the prayer to renounce it, and the practical walking-it-out. It explicitly does not replace medical care; ministry and medicine work together.

For the wider doctrinal context, see [Spiritual Warfare](/codex/spiritual-warfare/) and [Authority to Cast Out Demons](/codex/authority-to-cast-out-demons/).

## In full

> Produces ongoing weakness and resistance to healing.

## How it attaches

Forms through trauma, prolonged illness, emotional wounds, or generational patterns of weakness.

## How agreement forms

Agreement forms when chronic weakness is accepted as identity rather than resisted in faith.

## Symptoms

- Chronic fatigue
- Recurring illness
- Limited mobility
- Hopelessness about healing

## Scriptural basis

**[Luke 13:11](/codex/luke-13-11/)**
> A woman who had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years.

**[Isaiah 53:5](/codex/isaiah-53-5/)**
> By His wounds we are healed.

**[Psalms 103:3](/codex/psalms-103-3/)**
> Who heals all your diseases.

## A prayer to renounce the Spirit of Infirmity

> Lord [Jesus](/codex/jesus/), I renounce infirmity and every agreement with weakness. Heal the wounds that opened the door to prolonged affliction. I command the spirit of infirmity to leave my body and mind. Restore strength, vitality, and hope. I seal this healing in the Blood of Jesus. Amen.

## Walking it out

1. Speak healing Scriptures daily.
2. Address unresolved emotional wounds through prayer.
3. Act in faith by moving and thanking God for healing.

## How it enters

The gateways the framework associates with this spirit:

## Other spirits in the spiritual cluster

- [Spirit of Antichrist](/codex/spirit-of-antichrist/). Opposes Christ’s authority and pushes self-rule and counterfeit faith.
- [Spirit of Bondage](/codex/spirit-of-bondage/). Creates cycles of addiction and captivity.
- [Spirit of Oppression](/codex/spirit-of-oppression/). Applies spiritual pressure that drains strength and joy.
- [Spirit of Slumber](/codex/spirit-of-slumber/). Weakens prayer, dulls watchfulness, and reduces spiritual alertness.
- [Spirit of Witchcraft and Occult Influence](/codex/spirit-of-witchcraft-and-occult-influence/). Invites unauthorized spiritual influence and counterfeit authority.

## Common questions this page answers

**Q: What is the spirit of infirmity in [Luke 13](/codex/luke-13/)?**

In [Luke 13:11](/codex/luke-13-11/), Jesus encounters a woman who "had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years." He does not call it arthritis; He calls it bondage, "whom Satan has bound for eighteen years" ([Luke 13:16](/codex/luke-13-16/)). The pattern names chronic conditions that have a spiritual layer beneath the physical one.

**Q: Can a sickness be a demon?**

Sometimes. Most physical illness is just physical illness, and a doctor is the right answer. But chronic conditions that resist all treatment, drag on for years, and that the person keeps describing in spiritual language, can have a spiritual layer that medicine alone cannot reach.

**Q: How do I pray for healing of chronic illness?**

Renounce any agreement with weakness, ask God to heal the wounds that opened the door, command the spirit of infirmity to leave, and receive Christ's healing ([Isaiah 53:5](/codex/isaiah-53-5/): "by His wounds we are healed"). See the renunciation prayer above; pair it with ongoing medical care, not in place of it.

**Q: Does this replace going to the doctor?**

No. The framework explicitly does not replace medical care; ministry and medicine work together. Continue prescribed treatment, see your doctor, do not come off medication for the sake of deliverance. The spiritual layer is addressed alongside, not instead of, the physical care.

**Q: How does the spirit of infirmity attach?**

Through trauma, generational inheritance ([Generational and ancestral](/codex/generational-and-ancestral/)), occult contact, or word curses spoken over a person ("you are just like your mother, you will get sick"). The gateways close through specific renunciation and forgiveness; see [Authority to Cast Out Demons](/codex/authority-to-cast-out-demons/) for the session framework.
