## Setting

- **Speaker:** the narrator of Ruth, an anonymous storyteller
- **Audience:** the readers of the book
- **Location:** Beth-lehem, in the house of Boaz
- **Time period:** the days when the judges judged (Ruth 1:1), after the redemption at the gate (4:1-12)

## Theological reading

"So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife; and he went in unto her, and Jehovah gave her conception, and she bare a son." The verse compresses marriage, conception and birth into one sentence, and places Jehovah's action in the middle of it.

Most of what the book says about Jehovah comes in the characters' own words: blessings (1:8-9; 2:4, 2:12, 2:20), Naomi's complaint (1:13, 1:20-21), and oaths (1:17; 3:13). The narrator states God's action directly only at the beginning, when Naomi heard "how that Jehovah had visited his people in giving them bread" (1:6), and here. Famine and barrenness bracket the story, and both are ended by Jehovah, whose action the narrator does not otherwise state in between.

Ruth had been married about ten years in Moab (1:4) and the book records no child. The townspeople had just prayed that she would be "like Rachel and like Leah" (4:11), and of Rachel it is written, "God remembered Rachel ... and opened her womb" ([Genesis 30:22](/codex/genesis-30-22/)). The blessing at the gate is answered in the next verse the narrator writes.

## Why these four translations

ris3n chose ASV, WEB, KJV, and YLT for two reasons together. They are the **most literal English translations available** (formal-equivalence: word-for-word renderings that preserve the Hebrew and Greek grammar rather than smoothing it into modern dynamic-equivalence idiom). And they are in the **public domain in the United States**, which means fair-use quotation at any length requires no publisher license. Modern licensed translations (NASB95, ESV, NIV) restrict volume of quotation under their copyright terms, so they are not used at stub-level coverage here. NASB95 appears only on hand-curated rich passage hubs under Lockman Foundation's fair-use allowance.

The four:

- **[ASV](/codex/asv/)** (American Standard Version, 1901). The basis of the modern critical-text English tradition.
- **[WEB](/codex/web/)** (World English Bible, contemporary). Public-domain revision in the ASV line, in current English.
- **[KJV](/codex/kjv/)** (King James Version, 1611). Reformation-era, Textus Receptus base.
- **[YLT](/codex/ylt/)** (Young's Literal Translation, Robert Young, 1862). Hyper-literal preservation of Hebrew and Greek grammar; useful for word-study work even where English reads stiff.
