## Setting

- **Speaker:** "all the people that were in the gate, and the elders" (Ruth 4:11)
- **Audience:** Boaz, who has just bought Elimelech's land and taken Ruth as wife before witnesses (4:9-10)
- **Location:** the gate of Beth-lehem (Ruth 4:1)
- **Time period:** "in the days when the judges judged" (Ruth 1:1); the closing genealogy reaches David (4:17-22)

## Theological reading

The witnesses answer Boaz's legal declaration with a blessing: "We are witnesses. Jehovah make the woman that is come into thy house like Rachel and like Leah, which two did build the house of Israel: and do thou worthily in Ephrathah, and be famous in Beth-lehem." Ruth the Moabitess is set beside the mothers of Israel's tribes.

"Build the house" is a play on the household Boaz is restoring, for the purpose of the marriage was "to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance" (4:10). The law of Deuteronomy 25:9 speaks of the man "that doth not build up his brother's house"; here the opposite happens, and the people pray that the house will flourish. "Worthily" is Strong's H2428, the word the KJV renders "virtuous" when Boaz calls Ruth "a virtuous woman" (3:11), and "wealth" when he is introduced as "a mighty man of wealth" (2:1).

The blessing continues by naming Perez, "whom Tamar bare unto Judah" (4:12). Like Ruth, Tamar was a widow whose claim to continue a dead man's line was at stake, and Judah confessed, "She is more righteous than I" (Genesis 38:26). The prayer is answered in the genealogy that follows, from Perez to David (4:18-22), and Rachel, Bethlehem and Ephrathah are joined in Genesis 35:19, "Ephrath (the same is Beth-lehem)."

## Why these four translations

ris3n chose ASV, WEB, KJV, and YLT for two reasons together. They are the **most literal English translations available** (formal-equivalence: word-for-word renderings that preserve the Hebrew and Greek grammar rather than smoothing it into modern dynamic-equivalence idiom). And they are in the **public domain in the United States**, which means fair-use quotation at any length requires no publisher license. Modern licensed translations (NASB95, ESV, NIV) restrict volume of quotation under their copyright terms, so they are not used at stub-level coverage here. NASB95 appears only on hand-curated rich passage hubs under Lockman Foundation's fair-use allowance.

The four:

- **[ASV](/codex/asv/)** (American Standard Version, 1901). The basis of the modern critical-text English tradition.
- **[WEB](/codex/web/)** (World English Bible, contemporary). Public-domain revision in the ASV line, in current English.
- **[KJV](/codex/kjv/)** (King James Version, 1611). Reformation-era, Textus Receptus base.
- **[YLT](/codex/ylt/)** (Young's Literal Translation, Robert Young, 1862). Hyper-literal preservation of Hebrew and Greek grammar; useful for word-study work even where English reads stiff.
