## Immediate context (±2 verses)

**ASV** ([ASV](/codex/asv/))
> 15. And when she was risen up to glean, Boaz commanded his young men, saying, Let her glean even among the sheaves, and reproach her not. 16. And also pull out some for her from the bundles, and leave it, and let her glean, and rebuke her not.
>
> **17. So she gleaned in the field until even; and she beat out that which she had gleaned, and it was about an ephah of barley. 18. And she took it up, and went into the city; and her mother-in-law saw what she had gleaned: and she brought forth and gave to her that which she had left after she was sufficed.**
>
> 19. And her mother-in-law said unto her, Where hast thou gleaned to-day? and where hast thou wrought? blessed be he that did take knowledge of thee. And she showed her mother-in-law with whom she had wrought, and said, The man's name with whom I wrought to-day is Boaz. 20. And Naomi said unto her daughter-in-law, Blessed be he of Jehovah, who hath not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead. And Naomi said unto her, The man is nigh of kin unto us, one of our near kinsmen. (Ruth 2:15-20, ASV)

And she took it up, and went into the city: and her mother in law saw what she had gleaned: and she brought forth, and gave to her that she had reserved after she was sufficed.**

And Naomi said unto her daughter in law, Blessed be he of the LORD, who hath not left off his kindness to the living and to the dead. **YLT** ([YLT](/codex/ylt/))
> 15. And she riseth to glean, and Boaz chargeth his young men, saying, 'Even between the sheaves she doth glean, and ye do not cause her to blush; 16. and also ye do surely cast to her of the handfuls, and have left, and she hath gleaned, and ye do not push against her.'
>
> **17. And she gleaneth in the field till the evening, and beateth out that which she hath gleaned, and it is about an ephah of barley; 18. and she taketh [it] up, and goeth into the city, and her mother-in-law seeth that which she hath gleaned, and she bringeth out and giveth to her that which she left from her satiety.**
>
> 19. And her mother-in-law saith to her, 'Where hast thou gleaned to-day? and where hast thou wrought? may he who is discerning thee be blessed.' And she declareth to her mother-in-law with whom she hath wrought, and saith, 'The name of the man with whom I have wrought to-day [is] Boaz.' 20. And Naomi saith to her daughter-in-law, 'Blessed [is] he of Jehovah who hath not forsaken His kindness with the living and with the dead;' and Naomi saith to her, 'The man is a relation of ours; he [is] of our redeemers.' (Ruth 2:15-20, YLT)

## Setting

- **Speaker:** the narrator of Ruth, an anonymous storyteller
- **Audience:** the readers of the book
- **Location:** Boaz's field, then "the city," Beth-lehem (Ruth 2:17-18)
- **Time period:** the period of the judges (Ruth 1:1), during the harvest that began "in the beginning of barley harvest" (1:22)

## Theological reading

"So she gleaned in the field until even; and she beat out that which she had gleaned, and it was about an ephah of barley." The amount reflects Boaz's instructions to let grain fall for her (2:15-16).

Ruth "took it up, and went into the city; and her mother-in-law saw what she had gleaned: and she brought forth and gave to her that which she had left after she was sufficed" (2:18). She also brings home the surplus of the meal Boaz gave her (2:14). Ruth serves Naomi with everything she has received.

The abundance prompts Naomi's question, "Where hast thou gleaned to-day?" and her blessing on the unknown benefactor (2:19). The woman who said "Jehovah hath brought me home again empty" (1:21) is now handed grain, and the "full" she lost begins to return.

## Why these four translations

ris3n chose ASV, WEB, KJV, and YLT for two reasons together. They are the **most literal English translations available** (formal-equivalence: word-for-word renderings that preserve the Hebrew and Greek grammar rather than smoothing it into modern dynamic-equivalence idiom). And they are in the **public domain in the United States**, which means fair-use quotation at any length requires no publisher license. Modern licensed translations (NASB95, ESV, NIV) restrict volume of quotation under their copyright terms, so they are not used at stub-level coverage here. NASB95 appears only on hand-curated rich passage hubs under Lockman Foundation's fair-use allowance.

The four:

- **[ASV](/codex/asv/)** (American Standard Version, 1901). The basis of the modern critical-text English tradition.
- **[WEB](/codex/web/)** (World English Bible, contemporary). Public-domain revision in the ASV line, in current English.
- **[KJV](/codex/kjv/)** (King James Version, 1611). Reformation-era, Textus Receptus base.
- **[YLT](/codex/ylt/)** (Young's Literal Translation, Robert Young, 1862). Hyper-literal preservation of Hebrew and Greek grammar; useful for word-study work even where English reads stiff.
