# New Age Spirituality vs the Christian God

<!-- type: argument | created: 2026-10-14 | updated: 2026-10-14 -->

## Intro

Many people today say, "I'm spiritual, but not religious." They believe in something more than matter. They talk about **the universe**, **energy**, **vibrations** and their **higher self**. Some practice **manifestation**, the idea that what you focus on, you attract. Some listen to spirit guides or channeled teachers. Many believe in **reincarnation** and **karma**. And most hold that **all paths lead to God**.

Christianity agrees with more of this than people expect:

- There is more to reality than matter.
- The inner life matters.
- The world is full of meaning.
- People are made for something beyond themselves.

The disagreement is about *who* is at the center. In New Age belief, the deepest reality is an impersonal energy, and your deepest self is part of it, or is it. In Christianity, the deepest reality is a **Person**, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, who made you, knows your name and loves you: "I have called thee by thy name, thou art mine" ([Isaiah 43:1](/codex/isaiah-43-1/), ASV).

That one difference changes everything else:

- **The universe** cannot love you, guide you or forgive you, because it is not a someone. People who say "the universe is sending me signs" are already talking as if it were a person.
- **Manifestation** puts you in charge of your life, which sounds freeing until something terrible happens and the theory says you attracted it.
- **Karma** keeps score but can never forgive. Jesus forgives.
- **All paths** cannot lead to the same place when the paths themselves disagree about where they are going.

When the two are compared question by question, the Christian God explains more about the world and offers more to the seeker. The longing behind New Age spirituality is real. It is a longing for a Person, and the Person has come looking for us.

Quick reply for a live conversation: *"If the universe is guiding you, it has to know you and care about you, and that makes it a someone, not a something. The Christian claim is that the Someone is real, He knows your name, and He doesn't ask you to vibrate high enough to deserve Him. He came to you."*

## Cheatsheet

**The 30-second reply:**

> New Age spirituality says the divine is an energy, you are part of it, and you can shape your life by aligning with it. Christianity says the divine is a Person who made the energy, made you, and loves you. An energy cannot know you, guide you or forgive you. Manifestation blames the suffering for their suffering. Karma cannot forgive. Channeled spirits contradict one another. And all paths cannot lead to God when they teach opposite things. The Christian God is personal, good, forgiving and has come into history in Jesus, who rose from the dead.

**The fast facts:**

1. **Ultimate reality.** New Age: an impersonal energy, consciousness or "Source." Christianity: one personal God, distinct from what He made. See [Pantheism](/codex/pantheism/) and [Pantheism vs the Christian God](/codex/pantheism-vs-the-christian-god/).
2. **The self.** New Age: your higher self is divine and only needs to awaken. Christianity: you are made in God's image and need to be rescued, not just awakened ([Genesis 1:27](/codex/genesis-1-27/); [Romans 3:23](/codex/romans-3-23/)). The oldest offer of self-divinity in the Bible comes from the serpent: "ye shall be as God" ([Genesis 3:5](/codex/genesis-3-5/), ASV).
3. **Manifestation.** New Age: thoughts attract outcomes. Christianity: we ask a Father who knows what we need ([Matthew 6:8](/codex/matthew-6-8/)) and pray "Thy will be done" ([Matthew 6:10](/codex/matthew-6-10/), ASV), not "my will be done."
4. **Channeling.** The messages contradict one another, and the Bible says to "prove the spirits, whether they are of God" ([1 John 4:1](/codex/1-john-4-1/), ASV). See [Spiritualism](/codex/spiritualism/).
5. **Reincarnation and karma.** Christianity: "it is appointed unto men once to die, and after this cometh judgment" ([Hebrews 9:27](/codex/hebrews-9-27/), ASV), and judgment is met by grace, not by more lives. See [Reincarnation](/codex/reincarnation/) and [Karma](/codex/karma/).
6. **All paths.** The religions contradict each other on God, the self, salvation and the ending. They cannot all be right. Jesus did not claim to be one path among many: "no one cometh unto the Father, but by me" ([John 14:6](/codex/john-14-6/), ASV).
7. **The ending.** New Age: reabsorption into the One or endless spiritual evolution. Christianity: resurrection and seeing God face to face ([Revelation 22:4](/codex/revelation-22-4/)). See [World Religions Compared by Their Ultimate Ending](/codex/world-religions-compared-by-their-ultimate-ending/).

**The 4 strongest counter-moves:**

- *"Is the universe a someone or a something?"* If it can guide, notice and send signs, it is a someone, and you are already a kind of theist. If it is a something, it cannot guide you at all.
- *"If thoughts create reality, who attracted the child's cancer?"* Manifestation either blames the victim or quietly admits that outcomes are not in our control.
- *"Which channeled spirit is right?"* The spirits disagree with each other, and none of them can be checked. The one message they tend to share is that Jesus is not the only Savior, which is exactly what the Bible warns a deceiving spirit would say ([2 Corinthians 11:14](/codex/2-corinthians-11-14/); [Galatians 1:8](/codex/galatians-1-8/)).
- *"Do all paths lead to God, even the ones that say there is no God?"* Buddhism, Islam, Advaita Hinduism and Christianity give incompatible answers. Saying they are all the same disrespects what each one actually teaches.

**Reciprocal concessions (grant the small point, then collect a bigger one):**

- *Grant:* there is more to life than matter. *Now collect:* then the question is not whether the spiritual is real but who is behind it, and an honest seeker should want the answer that is true, not just the one that feels good.
- *Grant:* organized religion has hurt people. *Now collect:* Jesus spent His ministry confronting religious hypocrisy ([Matthew 23](/codex/matthew-23/)). Leaving a bad church is not the same as leaving Him, and private spirituality has no way to correct itself when it goes wrong.
- *Grant:* what you focus on shapes how you live. *Now collect:* that is a truth about attention and habit, not a law that bends the world. Paul learned "in whatsoever state I am, therein to be content" ([Philippians 4:11](/codex/philippians-4-11/), ASV), which is a better freedom than needing the universe to obey you.
- *Grant:* every religion contains some truth. *Now collect:* Christianity says the same ([Romans 2:14-15](/codex/romans-2-14-15/); [Acts 17:28](/codex/acts-17-28/)). But partial truth in many places is exactly why we need to ask which teaching is true where they disagree.

**The closing line:**

> The universe cannot know your name. The God who made the universe does, and He came looking for you.

## In full

"New Age" is the older label for a broad family of modern Western spiritualities; most people inside it now say *spiritual*, *conscious*, *awake* or *spiritual but not religious*. The family has no creed or central authority, but it draws on a recognizable set of sources:

- **Theosophy**, founded in 1875 by Helena Blavatsky and Henry Olcott, which spread karma, reincarnation, "ascended masters" and a universal ancient wisdom behind all religions.
- **New Thought**, the nineteenth-century American mind-cure movement associated with Phineas Quimby, which taught that thought shapes health and circumstance and produced the "law of attraction" literature, later popularized by Rhonda Byrne's *The Secret* (2006).
- **Channeled literature**, such as the Seth material through Jane Roberts and *A Course in Miracles* (1976), which Helen Schucman said she took down from an inner voice that identified itself as Jesus.
- **Eastern non-dual thought**, especially Advaita Vedanta, filtered through Western teachers, and the "present moment" spirituality of writers such as Eckhart Tolle.
- **Religious pluralism**, given academic form by John Hick, who held that the great religions are different human responses to one ultimate Real.

Its typical commitments are monism or pantheism (all is one, and the one is divine), the divinity of the self, spiritual growth across many lives, an impersonal moral law (karma), and the equality of religious paths. See [New Age Spiritualism](/codex/new-age-spiritualism/) for the full five-claim treatment and [Spiritual But Not Religious](/codex/spiritual-but-not-religious/) for the demographic.

The Christian doctrine of God holds that God is one being in three persons, personal, perfectly good, eternal, and the free Creator of everything else. He is present everywhere and closer to us than we are to ourselves ([Acts 17:27-28](/codex/acts-17-27-28/)), but He is not the universe and we are not Him. He saves by grace, through the death and resurrection of Jesus, once for all.

This page compares the two on the questions every worldview must answer, and argues that the Christian God is the better explanation of the world and the better hope for the person.

## Side by side

| Question | New Age spirituality | The Christian God |
|---|---|---|
| **What is ultimate reality?** | Energy, consciousness, "Source" or "the universe" | One personal God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit |
| **Is God personal?** | Usually not, though spoken of in personal terms | Yes: knows, wills, loves, speaks, forgives |
| **One or many gods?** | One divine whole; many guides, masters and spirits within it | One God; created angels and spirits, some fallen |
| **What is the self?** | A spark or wave of the divine; the higher self is God | An image-bearer of God, real, loved and fallen |
| **What is evil?** | Ignorance, low vibration, or an illusion of separation | A real corruption of good creation, judged and defeated |
| **Where does morality come from?** | Karma, intuition, or "what resonates" | The character and commands of a good God |
| **How are we saved?** | Awakening to our divinity, over many lives | Grace, through the death and resurrection of Jesus |
| **Revelation and its reliability** | Private intuition and channeled messages, uncheckable and contradictory | Public history and prophets, centered on a datable, witnessed resurrection |
| **What is prayer?** | Aligning, intending, manifesting | Asking a Father who knows and cares |
| **Who is Jesus?** | One enlightened teacher or ascended master among many | God the Son, the only mediator (1 Timothy 2:5) |
| **The ending** | Reabsorption into the One, or endless evolution | Resurrection, and life with God in a renewed world |

## Argument structure

| | Premise | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| **P1** | **The universe is not a someone.** An impersonal energy cannot guide, know, love or forgive; the personal language New Age uses for "the universe" points to a personal God. | Ultimate reality |
| **P2** | **The higher self is not God.** A divine self would not forget its divinity, need awakening, or do wrong; the experience of guilt fits the Christian account of a made and fallen self. | The self |
| **P3** | **Manifestation puts the self in God's place and blames the sufferer.** The law of attraction is unfalsifiable as a law and cruel as a theodicy; prayer to a Father is neither. | Moral and practical |
| **P4** | **Channeled messages need testing, and they fail the tests.** They contradict one another, cannot be checked, and agree mainly in denying the uniqueness of Christ. | Revelation |
| **P5** | **Reincarnation and karma cannot forgive.** An impersonal ledger can only collect; it also explains suffering by blaming the sufferer. Resurrection and grace answer both problems. | Moral and eschatological |
| **P6** | **All paths cannot lead to the same God.** The religions contradict one another, and the claim that all are equal is itself an exclusive claim. | Epistemic |
| **P7** | **The Christian ending is better for the seeker.** It keeps the person, keeps love, deals with guilt, and gives assurance; reabsorption and endless cycles do not. | Eschatological |
| **C** | On every question where the two differ, the Christian God explains the world better and offers the seeker more. New Age spirituality keeps the hunger for the sacred but cannot feed it, because what it hungers for is a Person. | |

## Master objections to the whole argument

**MO1: "You're lumping together very different people. Not every spiritual person believes all this."**

- True, and the page should be used that way. Many people hold two or three of these ideas, not all seven. Each premise stands on its own, so the conversation should start with whichever idea the person actually holds. The core contrast (impersonal energy vs personal God) runs through almost all of them.

**MO2: "Religion is about labels and rules. I just want a direct experience of the divine."**

- So does Christianity: "Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God" ([Matthew 5:8](/codex/matthew-5-8/), ASV). The question is not experience vs rules, but whether an experience is of something real. Experiences need interpreting, and private experience with no outside check cannot tell the difference between God, a mood, and a deceiving spirit ([2 Corinthians 11:14](/codex/2-corinthians-11-14/)).

**MO3: "Who are you to say your way is the only way? That's arrogant."**

- The claim is not "my way." It is Jesus' claim about Himself ([John 14:6](/codex/john-14-6/)), and it stands or falls on whether He rose from the dead (see [Argument from the Resurrection](/codex/argument-from-the-resurrection/)). Saying "all paths are equal" is also a claim to know something the followers of every path have missed. Every view about religions makes a claim; the question is which claim is true. See [Religious Pluralism Objection Defeater](/codex/religious-pluralism-objection-defeater/).

**MO4: "Science shows everything is energy and connected. Quantum physics proves consciousness creates reality."**

- Physics shows that matter and energy are convertible and that the world is governed by common laws. It does not show that energy is conscious, that it loves anyone, or that wishing changes outcomes. The popular "quantum" language in New Age books is not how physicists use the terms. Order and connection are exactly what one rational Creator would produce ([Psalm 19:1](/codex/psalms-19-1/)).

## Premise 1, The universe is not a someone

### Affirmative case

1. New Age speech constantly treats the universe as personal: it "has a plan," "sends signs," "is listening," "has your back."
2. Those are things only persons do. Planning needs a mind, sending needs intention, listening needs attention.
3. If the universe is truly impersonal energy, none of this language is true. Energy cannot plan for you or care about you.
4. If the language is true, then reality has a personal center, which is what Christians mean by God. The question then becomes which personal God, and the Christian answer is the God who "made the world and all things therein" ([Acts 17:24](/codex/acts-17-24/), ASV).
5. The universe also began, so whatever is ultimate is beyond it, not identical to it. See [Kalam Cosmological Argument](/codex/kalam-cosmological-argument/) and [Creatio ex Nihilo](/codex/creatio-ex-nihilo/).

### Anticipated objections

1. *"It's just a figure of speech. I mean the flow of life, the way things work out."*
2. *"Source is loving consciousness, not a cold force."*

### Rebuttals

1. Then the comfort goes with the figure of speech. If "the universe has a plan" means nothing more than "things happen," it cannot carry the trust people put in it. Trust needs a trustworthy someone.
2. Then Source knows and loves, which makes Source personal. The view has moved toward theism. The remaining questions are whether this personal God is identical to the world or its Creator, and whether He has spoken. See [Pantheism vs the Christian God](/codex/pantheism-vs-the-christian-god/).

## Premise 2, The higher self is not God

### Affirmative case

1. Many New Age teachers say the deepest self is divine and that spiritual growth is remembering what you already are. Shirley MacLaine's *Out on a Limb* (1983) made this message famous to a mass audience.
2. But a God who forgot it was God, and needs books, teachers and many lifetimes to remember, is not much of a God. Ignorance and forgetfulness are marks of a creature.
3. People also know they do wrong. Conscience accuses, not just of low vibrations, but of real guilt ([Romans 2:15](/codex/romans-2-15/)). A divine self would have nothing to be guilty about.
4. Christianity explains both sides of us. We are glorious because we bear God's image ([Genesis 1:27](/codex/genesis-1-27/)), and we are guilty because that image is fallen ([Romans 3:23](/codex/romans-3-23/)). See [Imago Dei](/codex/imago-dei/) and [Sin](/codex/sin/).
5. The Bible names the offer of self-divinity and where it came from: "ye shall be as God" was the serpent's promise ([Genesis 3:5](/codex/genesis-3-5/), ASV), and "I will make myself like the Most High" was the boast of the proud king ([Isaiah 14:14](/codex/isaiah-14-14/), ASV).

### Anticipated objections

1. *"Jesus Himself said 'ye are gods' ([John 10:34](/codex/john-10-34/))."*
2. *"Christians themselves talk about becoming partakers of the divine nature."*

### Rebuttals

1. Jesus was quoting [Psalm 82](/codex/psalms-82/), where human judges are called "gods" in a limited sense and then told they will "die like men." His argument was from the lesser to the greater: if they could be called gods, how much more the One the Father sent. It is a claim about Him, not about everyone. See [New Age Spiritualism](/codex/new-age-spiritualism/) for the full exegesis.
2. Christian *theosis* is a sharing in God's life by grace, through union with Christ, with the Creator and creature still distinct. It is a gift received, not a divinity discovered within. See [Theosis](/codex/theosis/).

## Premise 3, Manifestation puts the self in God's place and blames the sufferer

### Affirmative case

1. The law of attraction teaches that your thoughts and feelings draw matching events to you. Positive focus attracts good; negative focus attracts bad.
2. If that is a real law, it applies to everything, including the bad. The sick, the abused and the bankrupt must then have attracted their suffering. Critics of *The Secret* pointed this out at once, and it is the logical result of the theory.
3. If the theory is softened ("it doesn't always work," "it works in ways we can't see"), it can no longer be tested. Every success counts for it and every failure is explained away.
4. Jesus rejected the idea that suffering reveals the sufferer's fault. Asked whether a man was born blind because of sin, He answered, "Neither did this man sin, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him" ([John 9:3](/codex/john-9-3/), ASV). See also [Luke 13:1-5](/codex/luke-13-1-5/).
5. Christian prayer is not a technique for bending the world. It is a child asking a Father: "your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him" ([Matthew 6:8](/codex/matthew-6-8/), ASV). The Father can say no for our good, as He did to Paul: "My grace is sufficient for thee" ([2 Corinthians 12:9](/codex/2-corinthians-12-9/), ASV).
6. Making plans as if outcomes were ours to command is exactly what James warns against: "ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall both live, and do this or that" ([James 4:15](/codex/james-4-15/), ASV).

### Anticipated objections

1. *"Manifestation is just positive thinking and goal setting. It works for me."*
2. *"Prayer is just Christian manifestation."*

### Rebuttals

1. Positive habits and clear goals help, and Christianity has no quarrel with them. But that is ordinary cause and effect (attention, effort, opportunity), not a spiritual law that rearranges events. Keep the habit; drop the claim to control the world.
2. The difference is who decides. Manifestation trusts a technique to deliver what I want. Prayer trusts a Person to give what is good, including things I did not ask for. "Thy will be done" ([Matthew 6:10](/codex/matthew-6-10/), ASV) is the opposite of manifestation.

## Premise 4, Channeled messages need testing, and they fail the tests

### Affirmative case

1. Much New Age teaching claims to come from spirits, guides, ascended masters or higher beings speaking through a human channel: Seth through Jane Roberts, the voice behind *A Course in Miracles*, and many more. The practice descends from nineteenth-century Spiritualism. See [Spiritualism](/codex/spiritualism/).
2. The messages disagree with one another on the nature of God, the self, the world and the afterlife. They cannot all be true, and there is no outside way to check them.
3. The few things they mostly agree on are that Jesus is not the unique Son of God and that no atonement is needed. That is the one point on which the Bible says to be most careful: "though we, or an angel from heaven, should preach unto you any gospel other than that which we preached unto you, let him be anathema" ([Galatians 1:8](/codex/galatians-1-8/), ASV).
4. The Bible does not deny that spirits exist. It says they must be tested, because "even Satan fashioneth himself into an angel of light" ([2 Corinthians 11:14](/codex/2-corinthians-11-14/), ASV), and it forbids seeking them: "a consulter with a familiar spirit... is an abomination unto Jehovah" ([Deuteronomy 18:11-12](/codex/deuteronomy-18-11-12/), ASV). See [Spiritual Warfare](/codex/spiritual-warfare/) and [Occult contact](/codex/occult-contact/).
5. Christianity's revelation is public and testable. It rests on a man who lived at a known time, died publicly, and was seen alive by many named witnesses ([1 Corinthians 15:3-6](/codex/1-corinthians-15-3-6/)).

### Anticipated objections

1. *"My guide only says loving things. How can that be evil?"*
2. *"The Bible is channeled too. The prophets heard voices."*

### Rebuttals

1. A loving tone is not the test; truth is. The test the apostles gave is what the spirit says about Jesus ([1 John 4:1-3](/codex/1-john-4-1-3/)). A guide that speaks warmly but leads you away from Christ is doing exactly what Scripture warns a deceiver would do.
2. The prophets were tested publicly: their predictions had to come true ([Deuteronomy 18:22](/codex/deuteronomy-18-22/)), their message had to agree with what God had already revealed, and the whole line led to a public, historical event, the resurrection. A private channel whose messages cannot be checked is not the same kind of thing.

## Premise 5, Reincarnation and karma cannot forgive

### Affirmative case

1. Karma is a moral law of cause and effect: what you do comes back to you, in this life or the next. Reincarnation gives it time to work. See [Karma](/codex/karma/) and [Reincarnation](/codex/reincarnation/).
2. A law has no heart. It can record and collect, but it cannot forgive. Forgiveness is something only a person can give, because only a person can absorb a wrong instead of passing it on.
3. Karma also explains present suffering by past deeds, so a child born into suffering must be paying for something. Jesus rejected that reasoning ([John 9:2-3](/codex/john-9-2-3/)).
4. Most people cannot remember past lives, so the one paying the debt does not know what it is for. A punishment that cannot be understood cannot reform.
5. Christianity says something karma cannot: "the wages of sin is death; but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" ([Romans 6:23](/codex/romans-6-23/), ASV). The debt is real, and it is paid by Another ([Colossians 2:14](/codex/colossians-2-14/)). See [Penal Substitutionary Atonement](/codex/penal-substitutionary-atonement/).
6. Christianity also says each person lives once: "it is appointed unto men once to die, and after this cometh judgment" ([Hebrews 9:27](/codex/hebrews-9-27/), ASV). The hope is not another life but the same person raised ([1 Corinthians 15:42-44](/codex/1-corinthians-15-42-44/)). See [Resurrection of the Body](/codex/resurrection-of-the-body/).

### Anticipated objections

1. *"Reincarnation is merciful. It gives everyone another chance."*
2. *"People remember past lives under hypnosis."*

### Rebuttals

1. More chances are not mercy if every chance runs on the same scoreboard. What a guilty person needs is not more time to pay but someone to pay. "There is therefore now no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus" ([Romans 8:1](/codex/romans-8-1/), ASV).
2. Memories recovered under hypnosis are well known to be shaped by suggestion and by things a person read or heard and forgot. Such reports do not show that a self survived from another body. They also do not settle what a soul is, or who runs the cycle and why.

## Premise 6, All paths cannot lead to the same God

### Affirmative case

1. The religions give opposite answers to the basic questions. Is God personal (Christianity, Islam) or not (Advaita, much of Buddhism)? Does the self last forever (Christianity) or dissolve (Buddhism, Advaita)? Is Jesus God (Christianity) or not (every other)? See [World Religions](/codex/world-religions/).
2. Contradictory answers cannot all be true. See [Law of Non-Contradiction](/codex/law-of-non-contradiction/).
3. The usual picture is blind men touching different parts of an elephant. But as Lesslie Newbigin pointed out in *The Gospel in a Pluralist Society* (1989), the story only works because the teller claims to see the whole elephant. "All paths are equal" is not humble neutrality; it is a claim to know better than every path's own followers.
4. Jesus does not fit the "one teacher among many" picture, because He did not teach that He was one of many. "No one cometh unto the Father, but by me" ([John 14:6](/codex/john-14-6/), ASV); "in none other is there salvation" ([Acts 4:12](/codex/acts-4-12/), ASV). Either He was right, or He was not a good teacher at all. See [Liar Lunatic or Lord](/codex/liar-lunatic-or-lord/).
5. Christianity's exclusivity is also the most open invitation: "Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth" ([Isaiah 45:22](/codex/isaiah-45-22/), ASV). The way is narrow in its object (Jesus) and wide in its welcome (everyone). See [Salvation Exclusivity](/codex/salvation-exclusivity/).

### Anticipated objections

1. *"The differences are just cultural packaging. At the mystical core, they all agree."*
2. *"A loving God wouldn't leave people out because they were born in the wrong place."*

### Rebuttals

1. The differences are not packaging; they are the contents. Whether there is a personal God, whether the self survives, and whether we need forgiveness are the core, not the wrapping. Mystics in different traditions also describe very different experiences and interpret them differently. See [Religious Pluralism Objection](/codex/religious-pluralism-objection/).
2. Christianity agrees that God wants people from every nation, and says He will have them: "a great multitude, which no man could number, out of every nation" ([Revelation 7:9](/codex/revelation-7-9/), ASV). The question of those who never heard is real, but it is a question about how God applies Christ's work, not a reason to think every path saves.

## Premise 7, The Christian ending is better for the seeker

### Affirmative case

1. The New Age ending is either reabsorption into the One (the drop returns to the ocean, and you are gone) or an open-ended series of lives and levels with no clear end.
2. The Christian ending keeps the person and fulfils the longing. "They shall see his face" ([Revelation 22:4](/codex/revelation-22-4/), ASV). "He shall wipe away every tear from their eyes; and death shall be no more" ([Revelation 21:4](/codex/revelation-21-4/), ASV).
3. It also deals with guilt rather than ignoring it, and gives assurance now: "that ye may know that ye have eternal life" ([1 John 5:13](/codex/1-john-5-13/), ASV).
4. See [World Religions Compared by Their Ultimate Ending](/codex/world-religions-compared-by-their-ultimate-ending/) for this ending set beside every other.

### Anticipated objections

1. *"Wanting to keep your individual self is just ego."*

### Rebuttals

1. Christianity also calls us to deny ourselves ([Luke 9:23](/codex/luke-9-23/)). But it promises that the self, freed from selfishness, is restored, not erased. Love needs two. An ending with no one left to love is not the fulfilment of love; it is its end. See [Argument from Love](/codex/argument-from-love/).

## Scripture on the seeking God

The Bible's answer to the spiritual search is not that we find God within, but that God comes looking for us:

- **God made us for Himself, and is near.** God made the nations "that they should seek God, if haply they might feel after him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us: for in him we live, and move, and have our being" ([Acts 17:27-28](/codex/acts-17-27-28/), ASV). Paul said this to spiritually eager Athenians and then told them about the resurrection (17:31).
- **God, not the stars, holds the future.** Isaiah taunted proud Babylon, which said "I am, and there is none else besides me": "let now the astrologers, the star-gazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee" ([Isaiah 47:10](/codex/isaiah-47-10/), [13](/codex/isaiah-47-13/), ASV).
- **Do not seek the dead or the spirits.** "Should not a people seek unto their God? on behalf of the living should they seek unto the dead?" ([Isaiah 8:19](/codex/isaiah-8-19/), ASV).
- **God runs to meet the returning seeker.** "While he was yet afar off, his father saw him, and was moved with compassion, and ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him" ([Luke 15:20](/codex/luke-15-20/), ASV).

## Tactical notes

- **Listen first.** Ask, "What did your spiritual search give you that church didn't?" The answer is usually something Christianity actually offers: awe, freedom, being known, peace. See [Spiritual But Not Religious](/codex/spiritual-but-not-religious/).
- **Find out which idea they hold.** Most people hold a few of these ideas, not all. Start with the one they care about.
- **Press the personal question.** "Is the universe a someone or a something?" is the shortest route to the heart of the difference.
- **Press manifestation gently.** "If thoughts attract events, what about the child with cancer?" Most people do not want the answer their theory gives.
- **Offer forgiveness, not just arguments.** Karma has nothing to say to guilt. The gospel does.
- **Bring it to Jesus and the resurrection.** Every other question eventually depends on whether He rose. See [Argument from the Resurrection](/codex/argument-from-the-resurrection/).

## Common questions this page answers

**Q: What is the difference between New Age spirituality and Christianity?**

New Age spirituality usually treats the divine as an impersonal energy or consciousness, the self as part of that divine, and salvation as awakening over many lives. Christianity holds that God is a Person who made everything, that we are His image-bearers but fallen, and that salvation is a gift of grace through the death and resurrection of Jesus. The first offers an energy to align with; the second offers a Father to know.

**Q: Can a Christian believe in the law of attraction or manifestation?**

Positive habits and clear goals are fine, but the law of attraction claims more: that your thoughts draw events to you. Taken seriously, that means the sick and the abused attracted their suffering, which Jesus rejected ([John 9:3](/codex/john-9-3/)). Christian prayer asks a Father for what is good and ends with "Thy will be done," which is the opposite of commanding the universe.

**Q: Is "the universe" the same as God?**

No. The universe began and is made of matter and energy, which cannot know, plan or love. When people say "the universe is guiding me," they are using personal language that only fits a personal God. Christianity says that God made the universe, is present everywhere in it, and is not identical to it.

**Q: What does the Bible say about channeling and spirit guides?**

The Bible does not deny that spirits exist, but it forbids consulting them ([Deuteronomy 18:10-12](/codex/deuteronomy-18-10-12/)) and tells believers to "prove the spirits, whether they are of God" ([1 John 4:1](/codex/1-john-4-1/)). Channeled messages contradict each other and usually deny that Jesus is the unique Savior, which is exactly the test the apostles said a false spirit would fail.

**Q: Do all paths lead to God?**

Not if the paths contradict each other, and they do: on whether God is personal, whether the self survives, and who Jesus is. Saying all paths are equal is itself a claim to know better than every religion's own followers. Jesus did not present Himself as one path among many but said, "no one cometh unto the Father, but by me" ([John 14:6](/codex/john-14-6/)).

**Q: Can a Christian believe in reincarnation and karma?**

No. The Bible teaches that "it is appointed unto men once to die, and after this cometh judgment" ([Hebrews 9:27](/codex/hebrews-9-27/)), and that the hope is the resurrection of the same person, not rebirth in another body. Karma is an impersonal law that cannot forgive, while the gospel offers forgiveness as a free gift paid for by Christ.

**Q: Is it wrong to be spiritual but not religious?**

The longing behind it, for meaning, awe and connection with something beyond yourself, is good and is what humans were made for. The problem is that a private spirituality has no way to check itself and usually ends with an impersonal energy that cannot know or love you. Christianity says the longing is for a Person, and that He has already come looking for you.
