## Setting

- **Speaker:** the narrator
- **Audience:** the readers; within the scene, "all the people" gathered at the water gate
- **Location:** Jerusalem, "the broad place that was before the water gate" (Nehemiah 8:1)
- **Time period:** "when the seventh month was come" (Nehemiah 7:73), the seventh month of the year the wall was finished (Nehemiah 6:15; 7:73), c. 445 BC

## Theological reading

The verse that closes the register repeats Ezra 2:70 almost exactly, and what follows repeats the pattern of the first return. In Ezra, "when the seventh month was come, and the children of Israel were in the cities, the people gathered themselves together as one man to Jerusalem" (Ezra 3:1) to set up the altar. Here, in the seventh month, "all the people gathered themselves together as one man" (Nehemiah 8:1) to hear the law. The first return restored the altar; this gathering restores the book.

The day is "the first day of the seventh month" (Nehemiah 8:2), which the law set apart as "a solemn rest unto you, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation" (Leviticus 23:24). The gathering is national and voluntary: the people, not the leaders, ask Ezra "to bring the book of the law of Moses, which Jehovah had commanded to Israel."

The second half of Nehemiah 7:73 already opens the new episode, so the chapter break falls inside it. Reading the verses together shows that the settled register of families and the public reading of the law belong to one movement: the people are first counted, then taught.

## Why these four translations

ris3n chose ASV, WEB, KJV, and YLT for two reasons together. They are the **most literal English translations available** (formal-equivalence: word-for-word renderings that preserve the Hebrew and Greek grammar rather than smoothing it into modern dynamic-equivalence idiom). And they are in the **public domain in the United States**, which means fair-use quotation at any length requires no publisher license. Modern licensed translations (NASB95, ESV, NIV) restrict volume of quotation under their copyright terms, so they are not used at stub-level coverage here. NASB95 appears only on hand-curated rich passage hubs under Lockman Foundation's fair-use allowance.

The four:

- **[ASV](/codex/asv/)** (American Standard Version, 1901). The basis of the modern critical-text English tradition.
- **[WEB](/codex/web/)** (World English Bible, contemporary). Public-domain revision in the ASV line, in current English.
- **[KJV](/codex/kjv/)** (King James Version, 1611). Reformation-era, Textus Receptus base.
- **[YLT](/codex/ylt/)** (Young's Literal Translation, Robert Young, 1862). Hyper-literal preservation of Hebrew and Greek grammar; useful for word-study work even where English reads stiff.
