## Immediate context (±2 verses)

**ASV** ([ASV](/codex/asv/))
> 27. that he might present the church to himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. 28. Even so ought husbands also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his own wife loveth himself:
>
> **29. for no man ever hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as Christ also the church;**
>
> 30. because we are members of his body. 31. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh. (Ephesians 5:27-31, ASV)

**WEB** ([WEB](/codex/web/))
> 27. that he might present the assembly to himself gloriously, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without defect. 28. Even so husbands also ought to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself.
>
> **29. For no man ever hated his own flesh; but nourishes and cherishes it, even as the Lord also does the assembly;**
>
> 30. because we are members of his body, of his flesh and bones. 31. “For this cause a man will leave his father and mother, and will be joined to his wife. The two will become one flesh.” (Ephesians 5:27-31, WEB)

**KJV** ([KJV](/codex/kjv/))
> 27. That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. 28. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.
>
> **29. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:**
>
> 30. For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. 31. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. (Ephesians 5:27-31, KJV)

**YLT** ([YLT](/codex/ylt/))
> 27. that he might present it to himself the assembly in glory, not having spot or wrinkle, or any of such things, but that it may be holy and unblemished; 28. so ought the husbands to love their own wives as their own bodies: he who is loving his own wife, himself he doth love;
>
> **29. for no one ever his own flesh did hate, but doth nourish and cherish it, as also the Lord, the assembly,**
>
> 30. because members we are of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones; 31. 'for this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined to his wife, and they shall be, the two, for one flesh;' (Ephesians 5:27-31, YLT)

## Why these four translations

ris3n chose ASV, WEB, KJV, and YLT for two reasons together. They are the **most literal English translations available** (formal-equivalence: word-for-word renderings that preserve the Hebrew and Greek grammar rather than smoothing it into modern dynamic-equivalence idiom). And they are in the **public domain in the United States**, which means fair-use quotation at any length requires no publisher license. Modern licensed translations (NASB95, ESV, NIV) restrict volume of quotation under their copyright terms, so they are not used at stub-level coverage here. NASB95 appears only on hand-curated rich passage hubs under Lockman Foundation's fair-use allowance.

The four:

- **[ASV](/codex/asv/)** (American Standard Version, 1901). The basis of the modern critical-text English tradition.
- **[WEB](/codex/web/)** (World English Bible, contemporary). Public-domain revision in the ASV line, in current English.
- **[KJV](/codex/kjv/)** (King James Version, 1611). Reformation-era, Textus Receptus base.
- **[YLT](/codex/ylt/)** (Young's Literal Translation, Robert Young, 1862). Hyper-literal preservation of Hebrew and Greek grammar; useful for word-study work even where English reads stiff.

See [Bibles](/codex/bibles/) for the full per-translation history, translators, textual basis, strengths, and weaknesses.
