**Book:** [1 Corinthians](/codex/1-corinthians/) · NASB95

## Immediate context (±2 verses)

**ASV** ([ASV](/codex/asv/))
> 3. for ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you jealousy and strife, are ye not carnal, and do ye not walk after the manner of men? 4. For when one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not men?
>
> **5. What then is Apollos? and what is Paul? Ministers through whom ye believed; and each as the Lord gave to him.**
>
> 6. I planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. 7. So then neither is he that planteth anything, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. (1 Corinthians 3:3-7, ASV)

**WEB** ([WEB](/codex/web/))
> 3. for you are still fleshly. For insofar as there is jealousy, strife, and factions among you, aren’t you fleshly, and don’t you walk in the ways of men? 4. For when one says, “I follow Paul,” and another, “I follow Apollos,” aren’t you fleshly?
>
> **5. Who then is Apollos, and who is Paul, but servants through whom you believed; and each as the Lord gave to him?**
>
> 6. I planted. Apollos watered. But God gave the increase. 7. So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase. (1 Corinthians 3:3-7, WEB)

**KJV** ([KJV](/codex/kjv/))
> 3. For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? divisions: or, factions as men: Gr. according to man? 4. For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal?
>
> **5. Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man?**
>
> 6. I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. 7. So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. (1 Corinthians 3:3-7, KJV)

**YLT** ([YLT](/codex/ylt/))
> 3. for yet ye are fleshly, for where [there is] among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not fleshly, and in the manner of men do walk? 4. for when one may say, 'I, indeed, am of Paul;' and another, 'I, of Apollos;' are ye not fleshly?
>
> **5. Who, then, is Paul, and who Apollos, but ministrants through whom ye did believe, and to each as the Lord gave?**
>
> 6. I planted, Apollos watered, but God was giving growth; 7. so that neither is he who is planting anything, nor he who is watering, but He who is giving growth, God; (1 Corinthians 3:3-7, YLT)

## Why these four translations

ris3n chose ASV, WEB, KJV, and YLT for two reasons together. They are the **most literal English translations available** (formal-equivalence: word-for-word renderings that preserve the Hebrew and Greek grammar rather than smoothing it into modern dynamic-equivalence idiom). And they are in the **public domain in the United States**, which means fair-use quotation at any length requires no publisher license. Modern licensed translations (NASB95, ESV, NIV) restrict volume of quotation under their copyright terms, so they are not used at stub-level coverage here. NASB95 appears only on hand-curated rich passage hubs under Lockman Foundation's fair-use allowance.

The four:

- **[ASV](/codex/asv/)** (American Standard Version, 1901). The basis of the modern critical-text English tradition.
- **[WEB](/codex/web/)** (World English Bible, contemporary). Public-domain revision in the ASV line, in current English.
- **[KJV](/codex/kjv/)** (King James Version, 1611). Reformation-era, Textus Receptus base.
- **[YLT](/codex/ylt/)** (Young's Literal Translation, Robert Young, 1862). Hyper-literal preservation of Hebrew and Greek grammar; useful for word-study work even where English reads stiff.
